Winslow Homer (1836–1910) is regarded as one of the greatest American painters of the 19th century. Homer utilized both oil and watercolor in depicting 19th century American Sea and landscapes and the daily life's of those who inhabited it. He was sent to work as an artist-correspondent for the new popular illustrated journal Harper’s Weekly in 1861. We have digitally enhanced many of his beautful artworks including “the Gulf Stream”, “Croquet Scene”, “Northeaster” and many more. They are all free to download and enjoy under the CC0 license.

Edward Penfield (1866-1925) was an influential American poster artist, considered as the father of the American poster movement. He was employed as an art editor for Harper’s Weekly, Monthly, and Harper’s Bazaar, where he made posters advertising each issue of the magazine for over seven years. His art was avant-garde with less concern for the dramatic curving lines of Art Nouveau, inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e block prints, figure drawings by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, color lithographies by Jules Chéret, and other contemporary artists. He created simplified scenes of daily life in saturated colors, including horses, cats, sports, and women’s fashion. We have digitally enhanced some of his artworks. Today the Hereios of the We’re Here! Group are focusing on New Year Resolutions. Here are clues to mine. I'm intent on becoming much better at Italian and on revisiting the country (Sicily this time). Other travel plans include a trip to Canada (though it'll be Toronto rather than Montreal or Quebec), and another visit to New York City. And I will work on my golf with the aim of getting my handicap index down from 27.7 to 20. And, almost needless to say, take at least one photo every day.
It's a bit too late for my 2023 plans, but I just heard about a couple who have chosen 23 things to do 23 times during the year (they began with 18 things in 2018); these include journeys on buses numbered 1 to 23. Could be fun.

Camera used: Sony MVC-FD92... And yes I know it's a digital dinosaur (which explains some quality issues here), but it wasn't as ancient back when this shot was taken (2004). This picture is actually one of my favorites. And I actually like the noise... I think it works quite well here.
I guess in some way I like this image specifically because of noise. The current race towards maximum sensor resolution is extremely boring for me. Of course when what you are trying to convey requires clarity in every single detail - then high resolution is important and probably even requires large format film. But here - the details are unimportant. What I am trying to convey is the general feeling here - empty, slightly misty, cold, and humid landscape, with footsteps leading into some decaying nowhere... And in my opinion I don't need every minute detail to achieve that... in fact I think it would be distracting. If I was to print that I would make a miniature out of it... a tiny 5X3.75 on black background...

After Emperor Franz Joseph I on 16th March in 1873 determined the building site, was by imperial resolution of 4th September 1874 "in constant care for the needs of justice and the law-seeking population" the new building of the Justice Palace to base the in the capital and residence city of Vienna located courts ordered.
By a jury the design of the Viennese architect Alexander Wielemans, Edler von Monteforte (1843 - 1911), was selected, in May 1875 with the foundation work begun, and yet in 1881 the building including interior completed (as a major creation of the later historicism), the solemn laying down of the headstone ceremony in turn, Emperor Franz Joseph I on 22th May 1881 personally carried out. The costs would amount to 2.75 million guilders.
The new building housed the Supreme Court and the Cassationshof (Court of Cassation) with the Generalprocuratur (General Procurator), the Court of Appeal for Lower and Upper Austria and Salzburg (including General Attorney), the Regional Court for Civil Law Matters and the Commercial Court of Vienna. The building has since then experienced a very turbulent time.

The monumental building has since the beginning the basic shape of a right-angled quadrangle of 100 mx 80 m, and the main front is oriented to the ring road with the Parliament, before you today is the Grete Rehor Park (formerly Schmerlingpark).
The main entrance on the north side of the building is accessed via a 14 m wide stairway (including ramps ), the final pedestals are with two mighty lions (of the South Tyrolean sculptor Emanuel Pendl) decorated. The at end of the nineties of the last century completely renovated facade is characterized by fine and artistically valuable thorough maintenance.
The large central hall or auditorium is a three-story glass-covered arcade court with an oversized and also by Pendl created marble statue of Justice in a sitting position with gilded sword and law book. In the tympanum above the pillar columns are the coat of arms of the in those times in the Reichsrat (Imperial Diet) represented kingdoms and countries for which the Supreme Court was composing the common instance. Opposite the niche with the Justice there is a magnificent clock, above the statue the former Austrian imperial coat of arms. The auditorium attracts many domestic and foreign visitors and also provides the framework for festive events.
On the first floor on the side of the Supreme Court is the Large Foyer, on which inner wall the names of all the Presidents of the Supreme Court are carved in marble. Also on the first floor are the historical faithfully reconstructed courtrooms of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, in front of whose entry ways inscription panels are attached to the memory of the former Presidents of the Higher Regional Court of Vienna.
The fire of 1927
Palace of Justice
In violent clashes between supporters of Republican Defense Corps and the Veterans Association (Former Combatants) in Burgenland location Schattendorf (shadow village) on 30th Januara 1927 have been killed two innocent people, and the deed defendants were acquitted in the wake of a grand jury in Vienna. In the wake of a violent demonstration against the judgment the Palace of Justice on 15th July 1927 was set on fire. The police received orders to shoot and 89 people were killed.
This horrible and tragic event of the history of the Palace of Justice is related to its history in a constant, inseparable and sad connection. Through this, the bigger part of the premises, specially of the Supreme Court, has been destroyed and the complete books of the record offices - at that time the third largest Law Library in Europe - with many irreplaceable historical documents (as the Ministeratsprotokolle (the records of the Council of Ministers) of 1867 - 1918) as well as the land register for the most Viennese districts completely destructed. Until the restoration of the Palace of Justice in the early thirties of the last century the affected legal services had been temporarily in the building of the former Austria-Hungarian National Bank in Vienna 1, Herrengasse 17 and Landhausgasse 4 accommodated.
On 11th July 2008, for remaining memory, but also as a reminder for future generations - this day in July of 1927 in retrospect is yet considered a harbinger of the future February Revolution of 1934, and thus the destruction of the First Republic - in the presence of the Federal President Dr. Heinz Fischer and the Federal Minister for Justice Dr. Maria Berger, a plaque in the hall of the Palace of Justice has been unveiled.
The Second World War
In those years, the recently restored building was again several times and massively damaged by bombing, by which especially roof and the glass dome of the auditorium have been badly affected. After the war, the head departments of the Allied Control Council had quartered themselves.
By 1970, the Palace of Justice was also home of the - since then opposite in Palais Trautson in Neustiftgasse housed - Federal Ministry of Justice.

On 13 July 2007, the Palace of Justice was re-opened at a ceremony after about 15 years of refurbishment.

The interior refurbishment included hiebei (on this occasion) all floors, the staircases and as well as the relocation of the large central library with a completely new, vitreous reading room, including access via a bridge in one of the two courtyards. Finally, the historic court rooms have been extensively renovated and created a new large hall as a representation space for ceremonies and meetings.
Today the Supreme Court, the General Prosecution Office, the Higher Regional Court of Vienna, the Vienna Attorney General as well as the Regional Court for Civil Matters Vienna in the Palace of Justice housed. Also located on Schmerlingplatz is a police guard room.

Policies must change to achieve equality between women and men, says Parliament in a non-legislative resolution passed by 441 votes to 205 with 52 abstentions on Tuesday. Despite progress on some gender inequality issues, much remains to be done to reduce pay gaps, remove “glass ceilings” on women’s careers, remedy their lack of economic independence, improve their work/life balance, including parental leave, and protect their rights and access to contraception and abortion.
"The verdict is less than glorious: change is too slow and women's rights are suffering the effects of this. But the majority in favour of the resolution shows that the European Parliament backs the fight for wage equality, efforts to combat violence against women, agree on maternity leave proposals and safeguard access to abortion", said rapporteur Marc Tarabella (S&D, BE) after the vote.

Frederic Remington (1861–1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer. He had a great interest in the American Old West, concentrating on the image of cowboys, Native Americans, horses, and the US cavalry. He rose to prominence with interpretations of frontier life, with many of his illustrations published in popular journals such as Harper’s Weekly and Pearson’s Magazine. His nocturnal paintings were filled with color and light, moonlight, firelight, and candlelight. This region was imaged on 23 January 2014 during orbit 12 785. The image is centred on 46ºS / 69ºE and has a ground resolution of about 18 m per pixel. North is to the right and west is at the top.

But I do aspire to maintain a positive outlook on life with all the crap it keeps sending my way.I can't stand to see a frown. It is a challenge to me to turn every frown I see into a smile. I am always reaching for bubbles of happines. I carry a small bottle of bubbles every where I go. They ALWAYS make people smile. A little smile can change a persons day. and "I" get to share it.

Who learned the best part of the Bible and MOST important teachings of it.
In The face of adversity I have ALWAYS found at least one good thing. Though there have been times I had to look really hard for it. But then that is the key to aspiring to have a perpetual Positive attitude. One MUST LOOK for the good especially in the midst of most difficult situations. Prepare for the bad but look for and expect the Good. And That is what I aspire and have alway aspired to do.

Positive Thinking; Pollyanna Syndrome

Why do we have such a downer on Pollyanna? After all, she is just a little girl with a big dose of positive mental attitude. Instead of mocking, may we should learn something from her. I’m not saying we have to turn into Pollyanna, but when you think about it, positive thinking is the only sensible way forward. Our thinking creates our reality, so isn’t it just a bit daft to be creating our reality based on negative thinking? When we realise this, we understand we cannot afford the luxury of negative thinking.
As Einstein said, “we are boxed in by the boundary conditions of our thinking”. Mind management is essentially the key to life management, and we all have the power to choose what we think. It may take time and effort to break the habit of negative thinking, but that is just what it is, a habit. So the trick is to cultivate a new habit of looking for the positive. And the first step is to catch yourself when you are thinking negatively. It may shock you just how many of those 60,000 thoughts that run through your mind every day are of the negative variety. Perhaps when you catch yourself thinking negatively, you can turn it into a positive “but”. Whatever it is, look hard for something way to turn it around by seeing an advantage. Focus on the fact that your outer world reflects your inner world.
so which way would you rather think………… Create the habit of positive thinking
A good tool for this is daily affirmations. These are sayings repeated on a daily basis to manifest a more positive reality. It is a way of harnessing the power of words for your benefit because your reality starts with a thought. Help the mind along a more positive path. Just remember the rule with affirmations is that they must be personal, present and positive, for example “today I achieve everything I want effortlessly” rather than “today I will not have any problems”. You can start with something simple like “I choose happiness” or “I create my own reality”. You can write them, say them, sing them, it’s up to you, but a minimum of six times a day is good.
As the saying goes, whether you tell yourself you can or tell yourself you can’t do something you are right. So what have you got to lose by thinking positive?

"Oh, he always said he was, of course, but 'most always he said, too, that he wouldn't STAY a minister a minute if 'twasn't for the rejoicing texts."
"The--WHAT?" The Rev. Paul Ford's eyes left the leaf and gazed wonderingly into Pollyanna's merry little face.
“Well, , that's what father used to call 'em," she laughed. "Of course the Bible didn't name 'em that. But it's all those that begin 'Be glad in the Lord,' or 'Rejoice greatly,' or 'Shout for joy,' and all that, you know--such a lot of 'em. Once, when father felt specially bad, he counted 'em. There were eight hundred of ‘em.
“eight hundred.!”
“Yes--that told you to rejoice and be glad, you know; that's why father named 'em the 'rejoicing texts.”
“Oh.!" There was an odd look on the minister's face. His eyes had fallen to the words on the top paper in his hands--"But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" "And so your father--liked those 'rejoicing texts,' " he murmured
“Oh yes” nodded Pollyanna, emphatically. "He said he felt better right away, that first day he thought to count 'em. He said if God took the trouble to tell us eight hundred times to be glad and rejoice, He must want us to do it--SOME. And father felt ashamed that he hadn't done it more. After that, they got to be such a comfort to him, you know, when things went wrong; when the Ladies' Aiders got to fight--I mean, when they DIDN'T AGREE about something," corrected Pollyanna, hastily. "Why, it was those texts, too, father said, that made HIM think of the game--he began with ME on the crutches--but he said 'twas the rejoicing texts that started him on it.”
“And what game might that be?" asked the minister
"About finding something in everything to be glad about, you know. As I said, he began with me on the crutches." And once more Pollyanna told her story--this time to a man who listened with tender eyes and understanding ears.
A little later Pollyanna and the minister descended the hill, hand in hand. Pollyanna's face was radiant. Pollyanna loved to talk, and she had been talking now for some time: there seemed to be so many, many things about the game, her father, and the old home life that the minister wanted to know.
At the foot of the hill their ways parted, and Pollyanna down one road, and the minister down another, walked on alone.
In the Rev. Paul Ford's study that evening the minister sat thinking. Near him on the desk lay a few loose sheets of paper--his sermon notes. Under the suspended pencil in his fingers lay other sheets of paper, blank--his sermon to be. But the minister was not thinking either of what he had written, or of what be intended to write. In his imagination he was far away in a little Western town with a missionary minister who was poor, sick, worried, and almost alone in the world--but who was poring over the Bible to find how many times his Lord and Master had told him to "rejoice and be glad.”
After a time, with a long sigh, the Rev. Paul Ford roused himself, came back from the far Western town, and adjusted the sheets of paper under his hand "Matthew twenty-third; 13--14 and 23," he wrote; then, with a gesture of impatience, he dropped his pencil and pulled toward him a magazine left on the desk by his wife a few minutes before. Listlessly his tired eyes turned from paragraph to paragraph until these words arrested them: "A father one day said to his son, Tom, who, he knew, had refused to fill his mother's woodbox that morning: 'Tom, I'm sure you'll be glad to go and bring in some wood for your mother.' And without a word Tom went. Why? Just because his father showed so plainly that he expected him to do the right thing. Suppose he had said: 'Tom, I overheard what you said to your mother this morning, and I'm ashamed of you. Go at once and fill that woodbox!' I'll warrant that woodbox, would be empty yet, so far as Tom was concerned!"
On and on read the minister--a word here, a line there, a paragraph somewhere else.
"What men and women need is encouragement. Their natural resisting powers should be strengthened, not weakened. . . . Instead of always harping on a man's faults, tell him of his virtues. Try to pull him out of his rut of bad habits. Hold up to him his better self, his REAL self that can dare and do and win out! . . . The influence of a beautiful, helpful, hopeful character is contagious, and may revolutionize a whole town. . . . People radiate what is in their minds and in their hearts. If a man feels kindly and obliging, his neighbors will feel that way, too, before long. But if he scolds and scowls and criticizes--his neighbors will return scowl for scowl, and add interest! . . . When you look for the bad, expecting it, you will get it. When you know you will find the good--you will get that. . . . Tell your son Tom you KNOW he'll be glad to fill that woodbox--then watch him start, alert and interested!"
The minister dropped the paper and lifted his chin. In a moment he was on his feet, tramping the narrow room back and forth, back and forth. Later, some time later, he drew a long breath, and dropped himself in the chair at his desk.
"God helping me, I'll do it!" he cried softly. "I'll tell all my Toms I KNOW they'll be glad to fill that woodbox! I'll give them work to do, and I'll make them so full of the very joy of doing it that they won't have TIME to look at their neighbors' woodboxes!" And he picked up his sermon notes, tore straight through the sheets, and cast them from him, so that on one side of his chair lay "But woe unto you," and on the other, "scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" while across the smooth white paper before him his pencil fairly flew--after first drawing one black line through Matthew twenty-third; 13--14 and 23 .”
Thus it happened that the Rev. Paul Ford's sermon the next Sunday was a veritable bugle-call to the best that was in every man and woman and child that heard it; and its text was one of Pollyanna's shining eight hundred.
“Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, ye righteous, and shout for joy all ye that are upright in heart."
