Resolution #3 - To drop a dress size

The diet starts today and I'm back on the exercise wagon.

It was K's first day back at work and La Teeny's first day back at school. Normality (whatever that is) is upon us. I start back tomorrow.

I don't typically make New Year's Resolutions but now that the treadmill is back in its spot....it will be used

Some more panorama with the cellphone. It doesn't look that great, as resolution is limited and stitches are apparent, but it was worth the effort for the great color display.

NASA image release November 16, 2011

The science team that oversees the imaging system on board NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has released the highest resolution near-global topographic map of the moon ever created.

This new topographic map, from Arizona State University in Tempe, shows the surface shape and features over nearly the entire moon with a pixel scale close to 100 meters (328 feet). A single measure of elevation (one pixel) is about the size of two football fields placed side-by-side.

Scene: Domino Park, Sunday

Ana, Mika, Amir, and the children

The morning sun still cast its light at an angle across the riverside grass.

Ana and Mika were holding a workshop on a cloth spread out in a quiet corner of Domino Park. Together with the children, they gathered “fragments of memory”—sketchbooks and colored pencils, old magazines, dry leaves, acrylic paints. It was as if the lawn itself had gently laid out pieces of time gone by.

“Nadia, where did you find that photo?”

“In a box of my grandma’s things. Everything inside was all brown.”

“But it’s beautiful. Look—here…”

Ana crouched down and pointed to the edge of the sepia-toned photograph with Nadia. Reina paused what she was doing and drew closer.

Reina’s gentle eyes gazed intently at Nadia’s photograph.

“What kind of sound do you think this makes?”

Her murmur wasn’t tracing the surface of the paper, but rather searching deep into a world beyond it—a silent place only she could sense.

Nadia tilted her head slightly.

“...Sound?”

“Yeah. This brown part goes crackle-crackle. And this shadow... maybe the sound of wind stopping far away.”

Reina traced the darkest part of the photo with her finger and closed her eyes.

“When my dad disappeared, Mom said she heard the fridge stop humming. She said... sometimes the sound of something stopping is louder than when it’s there.”

She stood quietly and walked over to the paints. Mixing a little blue and a little black, she created a muted, dusty navy. She touched her brush lightly to the sketchbook, then softened the color with her fingertip.

“This is the sound after.”

What she drew looked like the trail of a shooting star. It was the lingering echo of a sound that had been silenced—something that had risen from deep within her and taken form.

Mika stepped in gently and asked, “What kind of sound is that?”

Reina didn’t smile, but her face softened.

“Maybe… the sound of Grandma trying not to cry.”

“Do you think your grandma was holding her tears back?”

Ana asked this as she smiled at Reina.

What Reina had gathered was the sound of a memory too fragile to become words.

Ana and Mika worked as Community Art Facilitators (CAF), engaging with children’s centers and senior homes. They helped orphans who had lost their parents and elderly people who had lost their youth to give shape to their memories—passing them on in a visible form.

Their goal was not to create “finished artworks,” but to make visible the passage of someone who once lived here.

—To rescue light that slipped through open palms,

to weave what remained in the net of memory,

to thread together words that were never spoken—

Arjun, Ana’s partner with whom she lived, never once opposed her work. In fact, he encouraged it. One time, Ana had asked him why he never said anything about her unstable career.

“Money? Anyone can earn that. But to create something… that’s impossible for most. Only you can do that.”

That was the moment Ana decided to share her life with him.

From beyond the dew-kissed grass at the far end of the park, a man slowly approached. His silhouette, lit from behind, looked hesitant—yet each step was sure.

It was Amir.

The children were scattered across the grass, each one quietly trying to bring “someone” from their inner world to the surface of the page. A still heat hung in the sketchbooks, along with time yet unspoken.

Amir picked up their glances one by one as he walked, finally stopping beside a young girl.

Nadia.

She kept moving her colored pencils, pretending not to notice him. She was silently pasting fragments of an old photograph onto black paper—shadows of a family whose faces were missing. Beside them, she’d painted a tiny red house.

Amir looked at it for a while, then crouched down.

“...Where is that house?”

His voice was soft. Nadia traced the red roof with her finger.

“It’s… where I used to live. But no one’s there now.”

Her voice was so quiet, it almost blended with the sound of the wind.

After a pause, Amir pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket.

“I drew one too—a house no one lives in anymore. Want to see it?”

He held out a brown-ink sketch. The door was slightly ajar, revealing nothing inside. Only the window had curtains.

Nadia took it and studied it silently. At last, she spoke.

“This window… looks like it’s open.”

Amir gave a surprised little smile.

“If that’s how it looks to you, then maybe that’s what it is.”

Ana was watching from a short distance away.

Amir’s back said nothing, but Nadia’s expression had softened, just a little.

“Good morning. Don’t you think this is a bit much for coincidence?”

Ana said with a smile, yesterday’s events tucked quietly behind her words. Amir replied with a rueful grin.

“Morning. Yeah, it’s not a coincidence. I’ve been watching you. My place is just around here.”

Ana laughed at his words and glanced over at Nadia.

“She rarely talks. Not even to Mika or me.”

With the East River at his back, Amir leaned against the railing. The breeze running along the river ruffled his hair.

“Sometimes you love something so much, you keep quiet.”

He tossed the words gently toward Ana, who leaned on the railing beside him.

“I’ll write that in my notebook,” she said.

Ana looked across the East River. Manhattan’s skyline, still half-asleep, floated faintly in the soft morning light. The buildings across the river stood silent, casting their shadows on the water as if last night’s chaos had been quietly swept away.

Some high-rises already shimmered with reflections. A thin wisp of steam rose from a chimney.

The steel arch of the Williamsburg Bridge lay between Brooklyn and Manhattan, catching the light with a dull glint.

The river breeze brushed their skin, carrying with it the faint metallic scent of salt and iron.

In the distance, a ship’s horn sounded. The morning sun flickered in patches across the water.

Behind the park rose the tower of One Domino Square—a symbol of redevelopment—slicing into the clouds.

On this Sunday morning, just awakened, the voices of children mixed quietly with the murmuring river.

This wasn’t just a backdrop. It was alive. A breathing piece of the map.

Then Ana noticed something swaying on the far side of the current.

At first, she thought it was just a plastic bag. But it floated, sank, and floated again, slowly drawing nearer.

It was cloth.

White, coarse, with a strangely sacred texture. Along the edge, faint embroidery—Arabic, perhaps. Beneath the cloth was the shape of a human body. The head sank gently, arms and legs folded as if in sleep.

The river breeze shifted.

Amid the salt, a trace of metal and blood drifted faintly through the air.

The body drifted slowly, then snagged on the reeds near the shore of Domino Park and stopped.

“...What is that?”

Ana asked, but Amir gave no reply. He just stared at the water.

The edge of the cloth lifted in the breeze, revealing the man’s cheek—pale, stiff, and yet, somehow, peaceful.

So still, it was as if he were still dreaming.

Professor Zakaria Haddad—

Ana would not learn his name until some time later.

Not too late for New Year Resolutions, is it?

All these words relate to a goal, or a target I'd like to reach in 2011. There's no 'friends' or 'travel' there, which where the two words I desperately wanted to get there, but all the others hopefully make sense...and if they don't, well, maybe that's on purpose!

Happy New Year, everyone. I'm sorry that I'm late. It's been a tricky end to the year, and an awkward Christmas. Nevertheless, 2011 means bigger and better things, and I am on my way towards them!

Missed you lot! x

Included in TOTW's peices of me week - these really are peices of me.

explored the fickle donkey hasn't given me an explore since December 2009! Thanks peeps!

Every year I seem to have the same resolution. Read MORE!

Nah !!!! Not for me ;o)

I never make resolutions, but...

I do promise to keep an eye on sweet Bullen

as I think Thistle may have a sibling in the spring :o)

and if its a colt ..... then somehow I'll have to find a way to give him a home!

I was sat on the very wet moor so naturally there are more of her below -

including the moment when Thistle decided it was her turn to be in front of the camera

( more of her another day ;o)

but I didn't take any shots of her picking up my stick and gently testing it -

I was just too busy enjoying her presence right beside me, unconcerned and inquisitive!!

The last two at very high ISO (5000) as darkness fell - here so you can see that big tum that I'm hoping is more than just doing well living on the moor..

(for ODC - resolution)

DP2M really did me in for sharpness. But it isn't practical for shooting in general (it works great only at ISO100). So now I am more conscious about shooting with my X-Pro1 trying to get the best resolution and sharpness. I've been shooting this Sky at Home set strictly at ISO 100-400 fearing noise at low light. Today I am experiementing with ISO 800 for the first time. It's nice not having to hold my breath while squeezing the shutter release button in order to prevent camera shake. But is the higher noise level worth it? Can't wait to experiment with this more.

On Saturday 25 February 2023, several thousand Peace Now demonstrators gathered in London to demand negotiations to bring about a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine war.

PEACE TALKS NOW.

Almost all the protesters agreed that their main demand was for a greater effort to end the horrific conflict in Ukraine, in which possibly as many as 200,000 may have already died and with the risk of escalation threatening the end of all human life on earth.

WASHINGTON AND LONDON BLOCKED TALKS IN 2022

The evidence suggests that the United States and United Kingdom blocked Ukraine from carrying through with its proposed basis for a peace deal with Russia during negotiations in March-April 2022, with the Ukrainian newspaper Ukrayinska Pravda, citing sources close to Zelensky, claiming that Boris Johnson, on his visit to Kiev on 9 April, personally lobbied the Ukrainian president to abandon peace talks and continue the conflict.

The former Israeli prime minister, Naftali Bennett, also claimed that Washington blocked his attempts to negotiate a peace deal between Kiev and Moscow.

A VARIETY OF VIEWS ON SENDING ARMS

Protesters had a greater variety of views on whether the West should send any arms to Ukraine at all, with many opposing any supply of arms that they believe will only prolong the conflict and suffering and risk further escalation, while others argued that sending some arms was morally justifiable to help Ukraine, but that the supply should be carefully calibrated so as not to make a wider and even more catastrophic world war more likely.

JEREMY CORBYN'S SPEECH

Jeremy Corbyn, as he concluded his brief speech, declared that 'if all the protagonists in this conflict can come together to discuss the supply of grain to the world, and come to an agreement by which ships carrying the grain from Ukraine and Russia can go to feed other people in other parts of the world; if the US is capable of contacting Russia to say that president Biden is visiting Kiev, then it is obviously possible they could come together for serious talks and serious negotiations to stop the fighting, stop the killing, stop the conflict, and bring about peace and justice."

WHY THE WEST NEEDS TO SUPPORT AND NOT BLOCK PEACE NEGOTIATIONS

1. Regardless of one's opinions on the rights and wrongs of this conflict, it has already claimed at least 100,000 lives, possibly over 200,000, including more than 8,000 civilians

Its continuation also threatens global food supplies and energy prices, plunging thousands into food and fuel poverty across Europe and leading to widespread food shortages and hunger across Africa and parts of Asia.

2. Every day the war continues, and as NATO supplies of ever more powerful weaponry continue to increase, the risk of the war escalating into a terminal nuclear conflict continues to grow. Putin and much of the Russian military establishment will do almost anything to prevent a Ukrainian victory, especially one that might see Crimea, of huge strategic importance and with a clear majority Russian population, be returned to Ukraine. Many strategic analysts and Russia specialists believe that Moscow would be willing to consider using at least tactical nuclear weapons, and that this could quickly escalate into global conflict. The ongoing conflict is also jeopardising all the remaining arms control agreements which prevent another nuclear arms race, so that even if Ukraine is victorious, we risk entering a new cold war which is likely to end, soon rather than later, in a nuclear conflict that will terminate all organised human life on earth.

3. The Ukraine War has led to a huge increase in the consumption of fossil fuels, and the reversal of key policies in the fight against climate change. It also hinders crucial cooperation between Russia and the West on this urgent issue with regards measures to curb emissions, as well as cooperation between Russian and Western scientists, particularly as Russia occupies a large part of the arctic, where research findings are vital for our understanding of how rapidly climate change is occuring.

4. We have to acknowledge that some of the West's recently declared war aims are highly questionable such as returning Crimea to Ukraine. Not only are the Russians unlikely to ever consider entering peace negotiations over its return, but over 60% of the population is Russian according to the last 2001 Ukrainian census and only 24% ( about 1 in 4) are Ukrainian. So it will be difficult to incorporate the territory back into Ukraine without at least some sort of referendum on Crimea's status. It also has to be acknowledged that the millions of Russians who live within Ukraine have for years faced harsh discrimination with severe restrictions on the importation of books in the Russian language since 2017 (Russian books had previously accounted for 60% of all titles), restrictions on the use of Russian language in schools and Russophobic attacks in the streets.

The Russians in the Donbass area have also suffered from years of shelling during a prolonged war Ukrainian forces waged against them, with a total death toll up to December 2021 (including both Ukrainian and insurgent forces) of over 14,000, including over 3,000 civilians killed. Yes, there was an inflow of Russian arms which also stoked the conflict, but many Russians viewed this as legitimate support for a population which was under attack from the Ukrainian army.

5. Finally, whatever one's views on the Ukrainian conflict, the evidence suggests that Western strategy is failing. Russian forces continue to gain ground in Ukraine on a daily basis, despite an enormous inflow of NATO arms. Russian industry is able to be fully mobilised on a war footing in a way that the West, with its just in time corporate controlled arms industry, can't compete with. NATO has already acknowledged that by the summer of this year, Ukraine is likely to run out of artillery shells. What is brutally termed the "burn rate" of NATO supplied military equipment (and indeed of Ukrainian young men) is far higher than its replenishment rate. At the same time, despite all the sanctions the Russian economy is predicted to grow faster this year than either Germany or the United Kingdom.

and Russian reserves remain impressively high. Much of the world, including China, India, South Africa and Brazil, remain more than willing to retain good relations with Russia and import its oil and other key commodities. Western strategy is failing to weaken Russia but the war strengthens the position of the nationalists within Russia, and gives the Russian government a pretext to clampdown on dissent. It also pushes Russia ever closer to China, while accelerating Europe's relative economic decline. So whatever one's moral view on the conflict, the lack of any coherent strategy to end this conflict and the West's refusal even to consider peace negotiations appears to be a catastrophic mistake.

My usual weight is around 165 lb, so I need to loose a bit of weight. In previous years I would not even worry about it, in fact the weight would be gone as soon as I started coaching and running right after the holidays. But as we get older it becomes more difficult, the knees hurt a little longer when you run and the metabolism is a bit slower, so this year is the Year of Living Healthy.

Defiant by name, Defiant against the cloudy backdrop and just caught in a breath of sun, 68005 leads sister cat 68022 on 1q01 Derby - Derby via St Pancras, this working more commonly seen with NMT (see previous Photo) but happy with 68's. Believe the pair were 8 late passed us and lost time throughout, however, the working must have missed a route section as the cats arrived back at base in Derby approx. 85 minutes early!
