NASA image release November 16, 2011
The science team that oversees the imaging system on board NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) has released the highest resolution near-global topographic map of the moon ever created.
This new topographic map, from Arizona State University in Tempe, shows the surface shape and features over nearly the entire moon with a pixel scale close to 100 meters (328 feet). A single measure of elevation (one pixel) is about the size of two football fields placed side-by-side.

One of Webb’s most complex instrument modes is with the MIRI Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MRS). The MRS is an integral-field spectrograph, which provides spectral and spatial information simultaneously for the entire field of view. The spectrograph provides three-dimensional ‘data cubes’ in which every pixel in an image contains a unique spectrum. Such spectrographs are extremely powerful tools to study the composition and kinematics of astronomical objects, as they combine the benefits of both traditional imaging and spectroscopy.
“The MRS is designed to have a spectral resolving power (observed wavelength divided by the smallest detectable wavelength difference) of about 3,000. That is high enough to resolve key atomic and molecular features in a variety of environments. At the highest redshifts, the MRS will be able to study hydrogen emission from the first galaxies. At lower redshifts, it will probe molecular hydrocarbon features in dusty nearby galaxies and detect the bright spectral fingerprints of elements such as oxygen, argon, and neon that can tell us about the properties of ionized gas in the interstellar medium. Closer to home, the MRS will produce maps of spectral features due to water ice and simple organic molecules in giant planets in our own solar system and in planet-forming disks around other stars.
“In order to cover the wide 5 to 28 micron wavelength range as efficiently as possible, the MRS integral field units are broken up into twelve individual wavelength bands, each of which must be calibrated individually. Over the past few weeks, the MIRI team (a large international group of astronomers from the USA and Europe) has been focusing primarily on calibrating the imaging components of the MRS. They want to ensure that all twelve bands are spatially well aligned with each other and with the MIRI Imager, so that it can be used to place targets accurately into the smaller MRS field of view. We show some early test results from this alignment process, illustrating the image quality achieved in each of the twelve bands using observations of the bright K giant star HD 37122 (located in the southern sky near the Large Magellanic Cloud).
“Once the spatial alignment and image quality of the several bands are well characterized, the MIRI team will prioritize calibrating the spectroscopic response of the instrument. This step will include determining the wavelength solution and spectral resolution throughout each of the twelve fields of view using observations of compact emission-line objects and diffuse planetary nebulae ejected by dying stars. We show the exceptional spectral resolving power of the MRS with a small segment of a spectrum obtained from recent engineering observations of the active galactic nucleus at the core of Seyfert galaxy NGC 6552. Once these basic instrument characteristics are established, it will be possible to calibrate MRS so that it is ready to support the wealth of Cycle 1 science programs due to start in a few short weeks.”

Floral illustrations from one of the most influential botanical artists, Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708–1770), German botanist and entomologist. He started his career as a gardener's apprentice traveling and working across Europe. Ehret was known for his Linnaean style of botanical illustrations since he closely worked with the "father of modern taxonomy", Carl Linnaeus. Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Jewish-Dutch painter, woodblock artist, and designer active in Amsterdam during the late 19th to early 20th century. He initially produced delicate watercolor drawings. However, he soon switched to decorative arts, as well as woodcuts and etchings. Mesquita’s works drew upon geometrical composition, simplicity concentrating on the main form, making them modern and unique. His recurrent themes included people portraits, exotic animals, plants, and flowers. His life tragically ended in 1944 when he, together with his family, was deported to Auschwitz. Two years later, a retrospective exhibition was set up in his honor at Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum. Week 2: resolutions.
The early morning sun catches 50018 "Resolution" as it enters Totnes with ECS from Laira for the 0640 Totnes to Exeter on 11th May 1988.
This is what proved to be my last major foray for 50s involving sleeping on the Up and Down sleepers (which were by then 47s). The previous night involved doing 47620 on the Up midnight to Taunton for 47628 on the Down back to Plymouth - oh joy!
The 0600 Plymouth to Paddington HST was then taken and the ECS and loco for the Totnes service could be viewed on Laira. If it was a 50....it was off the train at Totnes. Resolution was duly observed as we past the depot and stuck with the diagram and worked the 0811 Exeter to Waterloo and was taken to Yeovil for 50008 back to Exeter.
Shunting sticks, shackles and oil tail lamps form part of the station scenery.
This loco was one of my favourites and one of the ones I had over a 1,000 miles behind before it was refurbished in late 1982. Sadly it wasn't one of the machines to make it into preservation and was withdrawn in July 1991 and scrapped 12 months later at Springburn.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America. We've collected some of his finest public domain paintings in this collection, including his most famous opus, Madame X, they are all available to download under the CC0 license.

Samuel Colman (1832-1920) was an American designer, painter and writer, best known for his paintings of the Hudson River. He was one of the founding members and the first president of The American Watercolor Society, and also an avid traveler, exploring France, Spain and the Mediterranean. His travels inspired his works of beautiful foreign landscapes.

Defiant by name, Defiant against the cloudy backdrop and just caught in a breath of sun, 68005 leads sister cat 68022 on 1q01 Derby - Derby via St Pancras,this working more commonly seen with NMT (see previous Photo) but happy with 68's. Believe the pair were 8 late passed us and lost time throughout, however, the working must have missed a route section as the cats arrived back at base in Derby approx. 85 minutes early!

This is a little strange to start the year off, i know. But it's also very meaningful for me. Several years ago I read The Art of Happiness, written by The Dalai Lama, and it helped change my life. I am by no means a Buddhist, however I believe their beliefs are some of the most virtuous of all the religions available for us to choose from. To some, they may seem extreme, and they are difficult for most people, even me, to follow to the letter. But the meaning I draw from Buddhism, and the lessons I learned from The Art of Happiness are simple: Be compassionate towards others and you will find happiness in yourself. I try to live my life this way, and though sometimes it is difficult, I also recognize we all struggle and it's what we learn from that struggle that makes us stronger. A strong mind is a happy mind, in my opinion.
In 2009, I hope to strengthen my mind, and in the process to learn to live an even happier life. My resolution this year is not one of health or financial responsibility, but it is to do everything within my power to treat all creatures, human or animal, with compassion so that they might lead a happy life as well. I hope you all have a wonderful new year, and I look forward to the next year of creativity that flows from Flickr into all of our hearts and minds :)

The tall, golden-haired, blue-eyed twin goddesses were modeling the black & gold Braveheat Sword (Cross) simsuit and "Gold 45 Revolver" Gold'N'Virtue swimsuits with the main equation to Moving Dimensions Theory on the swimsuits: dx4/dt=ic. Ergo dx4/dt=ic--the foundational equation of all time and motion which is on all the shirts and swimsuits. Every photon that hits my Nikon D800e's sensor does it by surfing the fourth expanding dimension, which is moving at c relative to the three spatial dimensions, or dx4/dt=ic!
May the Hero's Journey Mythology Goddess inspire you (as they have inspired me!) along your own artistic journey! Love, love, love the 70-200mm F/2.8 Lens! Holding it up all day, alongside the Sony NEX 6 with the 50mm F/1.8 lens for cool video bokeh which I have mounted under the Nikon D800E camera, is quite the workout! My shoulders have gotten bigger after so many days with six hour shoots in the AM and 3 hour shoots in the PM holding that rig up :). Plus I have to carry all the gear, books, and clothes a few hundred yards up and down the steep cliffs. I count my photography days as two workout days. :) But I love it! Every day presents a puzzle--how to figure out the light, and every model presents a mystery to be unlocked--what are her best angles/poses/actions? Nothing beats the challenge of capturing the natural beauty of a day out there, when the light's dynamic range can change by a factor of ten in a few minutes as the mist burns away to reveal the sun, and then the wind whips up and a fog rolls on in, making it seem like a windy December dusk in July. One must always be mindful of tide, times, and temperatures and work quickly before the cameras get too hot in the sun, or the model gets too cold in the wind, as the tide and rogue waves reach out to grab your equipment/props/clothes and claim them for Poseidon, the god of the sea . Beach photography/video is just like surfing, with the conditions always changing and every wave a bit different. Studio photography is like riding an exercise bike set at level 1 in a gym in front of a TV. And shooting stills and video @ the same time is like Jimmy Page or Slash improvising on his double-necked guitar.
I'm working on a book called "Lone Cowboy Photography: A Humble Hero's Journey into the Art of Photography" about how to shoot it all on your own--stills and video for sports, portraits, and landscapes--with no assistants nor teams. Just you and the goddesses, the heroic athletes, the majestic, epic landscapes, and a copy of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey to teach you of the poetry of epic, heroic beauty. You gotta be ready, son--you gotta be ready for quick-draw showdowns at sunrise and sunset, during the magic hours and in the harsh light at high noon. Every shoot is over the second you finish packing your bags for the day with all your batteries, backup cameras, freshly-cleaned lenses, washed and folded clothes and hoodies, and props and polarizer filters. Every shoot ends the second the prep is over, and the fun, and art, and life of the live performance begins. :) "Every fighter has a plan," said boxing great Mike Tyson, "Until they get hit."

Reijer Johan Antonie Stolk (1896–1945) was a Javanese born Dutch painter, sculptor, graphic artist, inventor and Batik artist. He studied at Haarlem School of Arts and Crafts with inspiring teachers such as Chris Lebeau and Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. The colors and motifs in his later works were greatly inspired by his travel to Africa. We have digitally enhanced some of his original public domain artworks including woodblock prints from "Anatomical Studies in Woodcuts”, his self-portrait, and the famous “Head of the Buddha”. They are free to use under the CC0 license.
