I got these stuff at a fleamarket. 2 €.

Paul Frere writes about this in one of his books about Porsche race cars from the 1960s and 1970s. This is probably stuff that carried over from the hillclimb cars. They needed a resistor of high wattage, so they made it themselves, wrapping (resistance?) wire around wooden forms... What kind of maniacs do things like this to save fractions of a kg? Winners, apparently...

I can't tell you what the two large value resistors in the electronic ignition of a 917, do, but I know that there are. there. Naturally, I looked for them when I finally got up close to a 917 with the engine cover open, and, golly, there they were! I took a couple of pictures.

 

How many other idle wanderers at RennSport IV had the same permanent chemical changes to *their* brains? Its like a Paul Klee or Yoko Ono art piece- this tiny, specific piece of information that's on every continent, probably most countries, in most phone prefixes and some fraction of postal codes....

I have been given a huge bag full of electronic compoments, mostly resistors.

Added the function to have the circuit turn on when it gets dark and turns off when it gets light. No need to turn it on manually; all done automatically.

 

This is an incredibly simple sub-circuit: a resistor, transistor, and photoresistor. Getting closer to completing the full concept of the fireflies.

This is a 50 Ohm Microstrip on FR-4 with one 49R9 termination resistor on the left side and 4 pcs. 1960 resistor on the other side. The microstrip is broken in the middle, so this are really 2 test objects.

Nanda is making a bracelet out of colourful electrical wire and resistors at Moem's workshop Geeky Jewelry (in which the participants make earrings, bracelets, pendants, amulets and assorted bling from shiny electrical components and computer parts).

This PCB design was created in Fritzing. The amazing this is that I only put it together in the Prototyping mode, and when I clicked on the "PCB" button It was there ready and waiting for me. I did have to edit the tracks but all the components were there letting me know which connections needed to be made.

 

Now I need to get into etching my own PCBs!

OH MY GOODNESS. Radio Shack actually STILL SELLS COMPONENTS. I was able to make it out of the store with these before they tried to sell me a cell phone or a satellite dish.

uses set screws to hold the power resistor and thermistor or thermocouple in position. New, smaller nozzle also shown...

An AC induction motor can be brought to a rapid standstill by injecting any two phases with a current-controlled DC supply until the motor stops. This one is off a pedestal drill. It was made in the UK by RDM. It uses GEC contactors and an IR thyristor for the DC. Judging by the state of the components, I think it's spent the last 30 years powered up continuously. A few capacitors, resistors and joints to attend to and it's working again.

The soldered wine charms are semi-permanent. They will stay connected indefinitely. Depending on the type of component and what your washing procedures are like, the markings on the charm may fade eventually, or perhaps you just want to change resistor values, or from a capacitor to an inductor. The charms come off, well, like a charm, with a simple snip.

Near leaking Auricap replaced with Mundorf MCap Supreme of my Duntonic DU2i (aka AS2i) tube integrated amp this morning. Mundorf capacitors are so huge as compared to others but the sound quality is superb.

 

New caps on burning-in stage ... 12 hours down, 188 hours to go.:(

Sometimes add some shots to my Resistor Sculptures project, made with obosolete electronics parts somewhere in my wonders box.

At first, when I was a child, I thought that these were batteries. They are sequential banks of resistor windings and vented to dump a great amount of heat. The coach draws the most amount of current when starting from being at rest, it, and curiously, the least amount of current is drawn at top speed. The operators throttle adds all of these resistors at the lowest speed setting and moving the throttle to a higher speed taps the circuit one less resistor. Power from the overhead wire is tapped by a semi-metallic carbon "shoe" on the end of the trolley pole which is softer than the wire because it is easier to exchange the shoe periodically than it is to replace worn copper overhead wire. The wiper shoe conducts power down to the rheostat throttle which selects these resistors then into the motor and grounded by the axle contact with the rails to complete the circuit from the power house supplying 600 Volts, direct current with enough Amperes to start a train. The electric motor pinion connects to drive the axle gear and wheels both mechanically and electrically. If that motor was connected directly to the line without passing through these resistors, the wheels would spin instantly but the coach would go nowhere due to it's inertia. These resistors pictured were each connected to a switch terminal under the motorman’s handle so that, at first, all of the resistors were connected, drawing the most current and heating them all up like a toaster, allowing the motor to spin slowly and build up momentum increasing the coach speed. As the motorman's handle was successively turned to a "higher speed" then fewer of these resistors would be engaged, until, at top speed, there was a direct connection from the line, through the motors to ground.

Silly me, why would they need batteries? These Big Red Cars are connected overhead to a 600V, extension cord carrying hugely immense current, enough to start a train, that is many miles long!

This is the innards of my TI SR-50. It demonstrates how far we've come in 36 years of electronic evolution. Today's circuit boards have very few "discrete components" on them, and the ones that are mounted to the board are much much smaller than these gigantic dinosaur bones. If you've ever fiddled with hobbyist electronics, you know what you're looking at here... resistors, capacitors, transistors, inductors, a PC board, a couple of Integrated Circuit packages... it was quite sophisticated for the time, but the computer that runs your car now has thousands of times more computational power than this thing does... and those computers are idiots compared to an off-the-shelf PC you would get at Best Buy. But it was super-advanced for the time. It would have been plenty enough to get the Apollo 13 astronauts home safely. As was, sliderules did the job, but not without some worry that maybe an engineer had positioned his slide incorrectly, each time he'd done the calculation, and this the quintuple-check was still wrong and the capsule would hit the atmosphere too steeply and having returned all the way from the moon, burned up 50 miles from safety. Oh for one of these calculators just a few years earlier. But oh well, the astronauts got home alright anyway, and we went on to create ever more powerful computing machines, only to have one of our Mars landers make it all the way to the Red planet just to burn up in the atmosphere because some programmer somewhere had thought the number he was working on was in feet, and it was entered in meters. Fortunately, that lander didn't have people aboard.

 

Well, that's enough of a ramble on the guts of my old calculator. I think boards like this, where the components are just sitting there, plain for all to see, are beautiful things. The new boards, motherboards for our modern computers and such, are marvels of electrical engineering, but they're not colorful, not engaging, not nitty-gritty sexy like these were. We'll not see them again, but they were, in their time, the very best we could do.
