The ceramic 10 Watt / 160 Ohm resistor from a circa 1960 Model 12 Sunbeam Mixmaster.
This appears to be pretty typical condition for these resistors after about thirty years of use!!

After years of struggling, Radio Shack has declared bankruptcy. Does this once giant electronics retailer have the capacitors to transistor to a new found life? "Green concrete" dropper resistors like this were common in valve TVs of the 1970s. It's just a high-power resistor, used in the power supply.
Some components I clipped that looked useful and/or interesting--a few resistors look like they were made in prison! I pulled a lot of resistors and capacitors (not in this shot) that all seem like they could handle a few watts.
All wired up. The resistors are soldered directly to one of the spades at one end and then via a little loop of wire to the other spade which then goes of to the alternatore. The diode is in series inside the run power feed. All heat shrinked up it should be secure enough.
I had originally soldered the resistors directly between the two spades thinking that would be nice and tidy but then realised this would stop an easy bulb change (without de-soldering them)
I've tested it and it seems to work fine with the lamp only lighting when +'ve is connected to the centre wire
Problem with burned resistor in the voltage regulator section (82 ohm); probably from a liquid droped inside.
Assembled the resistor hot end I purchased from MakerGear a few months ago, seems like it doesn't get nearly as hot as the heat cores but that could also be the new big head nozzle.

There were just too many good memories of working down there with him and learning how to solder and building radios to let this just go...
