A motte and bailey stood at a different site in Criccieth before the masonry castle was built. In 1239, Llywelyn the Great imprisoned Gruffudd ap Llywelyn ap Iorwerth and Owain Goch, respectively his son and grandson, at Criccieth; this was likely at the castle.
In 1283 the castle was captured by English under the command of Edward I. It was then remodelled by James of St George.
In 1294, Madoc ap Llywelyn, a distant relation of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, began an uprising against English rule that spread quickly through Wales. Several English-held towns were razed and Criccieth (along with Harlech Castle and Aberystwyth Castle) were besieged that winter. Its residents survived until spring when the castle was resupplied.
In the 14th century the castle had a notable Welsh constable called Hywel ap Gruffydd, known as Howell the Axe, who fought for Edward III at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.
The castle was used as a prison until 1404 when Welsh forces captured the castle during the rebellion of Owain Glyndŵr. The Welsh then tore down its walls and set the castle alight. Some stonework still shows the scorch marks. Around that time it was noted that "Crukkith Castle had Roger de Accon for Constable, with six men-at-arms and fifty archers; annual maintenance £416, 14s, 2d.

The Aletschhorn (4194 m) is a mountain in the Alps in Switzerland, lying within the Jungfrau-Aletsch region, which has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The mountain shares part of its name with the Aletsch Glacier lying at its foot. It is the second highest mountain of the Bernese Alps after the Finsteraarhorn. Standing between the principal range of the Bernese Alps and the Pennine chain, it shares with the Bietschhorn the advantage of occupying a central position in relation to the high peaks around it. The Aletschhorn is often thought to command the finest of all the panoramic views from Alpine summits.

A glimpse into Chinese aesthetics and their relation with nature: a lot of geometric components in round and square motifs.
On the four edges of the square opening to the left and around the window panes on the right, the lines there as a whole denote clouds from the sky; and the curving ridge of the roof-- unlike those Gothic cathedrals pointing right into heaven-- reminds us instead of the curving fingers of Indian and court dancers.
They opened up and were very close to nature despite the fact that it rains and even snows there in winter. Other than planting trees and bamboos ( here just above the square opening on the left ) in their courtyards, they preferred bare stones from mother nature as art pieces ( in the case here, one on each side of the chamber on the right ) something that Japan has taken up to a certain extent...

Old boat by the canal. The redness of the water is caused by Azolla - a floating relation of the fern family.
While in Maine for our anniversary, we visited Camden for a quick visit to the top of the state park where we were afforded this beautiful view of the harbor and "Curtis Island" . . . which was intriguing to me as that is my maiden name! No relation, however!
One of my favourite beaches in Cornwall. When the tide is out the beach stretches for miles . I love the scale of the two walkers in relation to the curving shoreline.
Das Mittelrheintal ist unbestritten eine der schönsten Regionen Deutschlands, was nicht weniger an dem Weinanbau oder am gigantischen Tal des Rheins liegt, welches sich über dutzende von Kilometern durch Rheinland-Pfalz und Hessen erstreckt.
Selbst in den steilsten Lagen wird hier neben Riesling, Spätburgunder und Weißburgunder auch Gewürztraminer, sowie anderes angebaut.
Verbunden mit den zwei Eisenbahnstrecken, die sich zwischen Wasser und Natur auch durch die Orte ihren Weg schlängeln, ist mit der Masse an Zügen dieses Tal auch bei Freunden der Eisenbahn sehr beliebt.
Neben dem Güterverkehr gibt es auf der linken Rheinseite noch den Fernverkehr, der mit teils noch lokbespannten Zügen einen besonderen Reiz setzt.
Jedoch wusste man schon im alten Griechenland, dass nichts so beständig, wie der Wandel sei und die lokbespannten InterCity Züge mit 101 immer rarer werden.
Meist durch ICE abgelöst, wie das IC Zugpaar 118/119, wurde jedoch die IC Linie Stuttgart - Rheintal - Ruhrgebiet von 101 auf IC2 im Dezember 2022 umgestellt und die Relation teilweise bis nach Bielefeld verlängert.
Mit knackigen ca. 60 Minuten Verspätung zog 146 570 den IC 2566 zwischen der Überleitstelle "Urbar Süd" und dem nächsten überregional bekannten Ort Oberwesel an den zwei Fotografen vorbei, die wenig vorher den Blick zwischen den Weinreben ausfindig gemacht hatten.

The Caucasus Mountains is a mountain system in Eurasia lying between the Black and the Caspian Seas in the Caucasus region. It occupies parts of Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, drifting mainly from northwest to southeast. The Caucasus Mountains are made up of two separate ranges, the Greater Caucasus in the north and the Lesser Caucasus in the south. In addition, some sources recognize a Middle Caucasus Range. Its highest peak is Mount Elbrus, at 18,510 feet (5,642 meters), in the Greater Caucasus range.
Historically, the Caucasus Mountain Range has served as a geographic barrier at the convergence of the continents of Europe and Asia. Because the tectonic plate is geologically stable in this region, it has been hard to determine the exact course of the continental borderline, causing the border to change throughout history. While there continues to be disagreement over where the border lies in relation to the range, there is a general acceptance of assigning the Caucasus to Asia due to the strong Asian influences throughout the region.

Der ewige Kampf um ein Bild einer 156 konnte am 29.06.2019 im 13. Versuch endlich ad acta gelegt werden, wobei ich dennoch nicht 100%ig zufrieden war. Erstaunlicherweise wimmelte es in der ersten Juliwoche 2019 nur so von den DDR Sechsachsern der MEG. Neben den fast täglich verkehrenden Autozügen der Relation Leipzig - Bremerhaven kam auch der Gaskessel nach Wilhelmshaven mit einer 156. Am 03.07.2019 warf ich Abends gegen 20 Uhr mal einen Blick in die DSO Live-Sichtungen und siehe da: "03.07.19, 19:55 [HLI] Hannover-Linden MEG 156 003 geschlossene Autowagen 🔜 HSR".
Nach dem obligatorische Blick aus dem Fenster und bei Wetter Online, saß ich wenig Später auf dem Fahrrad nach Holtorf. Während ich durch Nienburg fuhr, stellte ich mir die Frage wann der Zug denn kommt. Noch vor der S-Bahn in Nienburg also gegen 20:40? Oder erst nach dem RE gegen 21 Uhr? Oder nach dem IC um 21:20? Ja, der dichte Verkehr auf der GUB ließ mich dann 2. vermuten, aber gegen 21 Uhr passt das ja noch vom Licht. Gegen 20:45 tauchte dann aber plötzlich der 30 Minuten verspätete ICE 776 auf und brachte den ganzen Plan durcheinander. Folglich gab es zwischen RE und IC keine Lücke mehr (RE hatte +8) sodass ich das Bild schon abschrieb. Der IC sauste um 21:16 pünktlich an mir vorbei und ich sah, dass zwischen den Masten noch eine größere Schattenlücke war. Somit blieb ich noch und das Signal sprang sofort wieder auf Hp1 und die Schatten wurden immer länger... Das bibbern nahm noch zu als von hinten den Bremer EZ mit 151 002 kam aber zwei Minuten später tauchte endlich die 156 hinten auf. Es passte noch genau mit den Schatten und der im Block hinter der 151 fahrende Altmann bemerkte mich rechtzeitig und hielt noch vor mir an, besten Dank!
Letztendlich bin ich zufrieden, wenngleich es 20 Minuten eher besser für die Nerven gewesen wäre ;-)
Am 12.08.2018 wurde ein Fototag an der Westfrankenbahn unternommen, um die DB 628 zu fotografieren. Die RE der Relation (Aschaffenburg) - Miltenberg - Crailsheim sind noch fest in der Hand der formschönen Triebwagen, jedoch ist auch hier ein Ende abzusehen. Als RE 23383 Miltenberg - Crailsheim verließen 628 224 und 231 am Vormittag den Bahnhof Wertheim, wo ihn vier Fotografen abpassten.
Lying that is, being partisan or, to put it mildly, being economical with the truth. This is why we can't trust an image unless it has been "verified" as our news bulletins often call it. Sometimes, one and the same image can be used for two mutually exclusive "narratives". We are observing this in relation to the imagery of the war in Ukraine. Corpses of civilians in Mariupol, we are being told, are the result of Russian war crimes, or, alternatively, of the action of the snipers of the (Ukrainian) Azov Battalion with its neo-Nazi background. These things need to be "verified". Seeing and believing are two different things.
Bereits zur Zeit der Römer war die Relation durch das Rohrachtal zwischen Geislingen und Amstetten ein bedeutender Handelsweg, welcher über die Jahrhunderte weiter an Bedeutung gewann.
Mit der Eisenbahn aber, kam ein neuer Verkehrsträger zum Vorschein, welcher für die damalige Zeit bahnbrechend schnell und zuverlässig Personen und Güter von A nach B brachte.
So war es nur eine Frage der Zeit und der Planung, wie die Schwäbische Alb zwischen Stuttgart und Ulm, überwunden werden konnte.
1850 war es dann schließlich soweit, die Eisenbahn brachte nun Güter und Personen zuverlässig über die Alb.
Der steilste Abschnitt war dabei der ca. 5 Kilometer lange Teil zwischen Geislingen und Amstetten.
Bis in die Gegenwart hat sich dabei der Einsatz der Schiebelokomotiven gehalten, welcher früher primär dem Einsatz der Dampflokomotiven unterlag.
Seit der Elektrifizierung 1933 wurde der Einsatz der Schiebelokomotiven zwar weniger, aber hält bis in die Gegenwart an.
Anfangs zu Dampflokzeiten von Württembergischen T3, T4, K vertreten, änderte sich seit 1933 der Einsatz zu Elektrolokomotiven, wie die E93 und E94. Gefolgt von den Einheitslokomitoven, kamen/kommen bis in die 2020er Jahre 151er und in der Gegenwart die 185er zum Einsatz.
In der Gegenwart werden nur noch wenige Güter und Personenzüge nachgeschoben, aber bilden immernoch das täglich Brot für die TRAXX von DB Cargo in Geislingen.
Gerne kam zu Zeiten, als der IC118/119/2012/2013 nur mit einer 218 fuhr der Nachschiebeeinsatz auch an Fernzügen zum Einsatz. Wer mehr dazu wissen möchte: hier entlang: de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geislinger_Steige
Der hochwertige Fernverkehr war seit Tag 1 der Geislinger Steige zudem ein wichtiges Rückgrat.
So war die Baureihe 103, sowie die Vorserien E03 001 bestimmt nicht zum ersten Mal am 28.06.2025 auf der 22,5‰ steilen Strecke anzutreffen.
Zur Feier des 175 jährigen Jubiläums gab es neben Dampf-Pendelfahrten, auch die E03 001, welche mit einer Rheingold-Garnitur zwischen Stuttgart und Ulm pendelte.
Am 29.06.2025 zog die E03 001 den D339 vom Ulm nach Stuttgart gegen kurz nach 17 Uhr ihren authentischen Reisezug im Stil der 1970er Jahre die Steige hinab, zum nächsten halt am großen Bahnhofsfest in Geislingen. Dort konnte neben einer Taufe eines Flirt von Arverio auf "Geislingen an der Steige" neben Snacks, Lokomotiven und musikalischer Unterhaltung auch das Stellwerk, sowie vieles mehr besichtigt werden. Einige Hobbykollegen wurden im rechten Bildrand entfernt.
Ein wenig erinnern die Zwergknäuelinge an Radioteleskope in Miniaturform. Ihre Hutunterseite ist es, die diesen Eindruck vermittelt und sie ist es auch, die diese Pilze fotografisch interessant macht. Der Reiz dieser Gruppe liegt insbesondere in der Anordnung der Pilzfruchtkörper zueinander, als auch in ihrer Größenverteilung.

El pico negro oscuro, de comisuras rojas, delgado y curvo, adaptado para tomar néctar de flores. Algunas veces perfora las flores por un lado, tomando el néctar sin polinizar la planta. No puede suspenderse en vuelo quieto como los colibríes, por lo que siempre debe posarse mientras se alimenta.

Ohne Photoshop-Gebrauch. Aber die KI steckt schon in unseren neuen Boliden. Verändert wieder einmal die Technik unsere Präferenzen ?
I know it says on the dial that the scale is calibrated in yards, and I believe that the little arrow above that label indicates that this ammeter was made for our armed forces, but what, I wonder, was it actually used to measure?
Despite having grown up surrounded by valves, capacitors, resistors, inductors, transformers, transistors and all manner of post-war, pre-millennial electronics, I have never previously seen, or heard of a meter such as this, which I found buried in a box of valves inherited from my old Dad. A vast quantity of such boxes have lain dormant in the loft here at No. 43 for the past decade or so, much to the mild vexation of Mrs 43.
It's fair to say that Dad was obsessed with radio. He and my uncle Roy, who emigrated to Australia in the early seventies, used to design and build their own transmitters, receivers and aerials, and there was a weekly broadcast (on a Sunday morning) during which they would bounce their signals off the ionosphere (or something like that) sharing news of life in Blighty and Oz. Afterwards there would be discussion on the merits, or otherwise, of their latest equipment designs and 'the conditions' of the atmosphere in relation to their transmissions.
They had official callsigns (Home Office issued, I think): Dad was G3SVT and uncle Roy was G3SML. Once in Australia, Roy became VK6MV if memory serves. And everything revolved around radio. Even holidays were chosen because the location might suit a particular transmitter, which was packed in the car along with all of the usual holiday accoutrements; various types of aerial would be bolted to the roof-rack, radio rigs mounted under the dashboard and then off we would go...
One particular holiday in the late sixties involved a bright yellow Mini, the doors, bonnet, boot and roof of which were covered in equally vibrant flowery wallpaper. Bolted to the roof rack was a three/four foot tall 'Halo' aerial. This type consisted of a tall pole with an 18 inch diameter circular rod at the top. I remember that practically everyone who saw the car just stopped in their tracks and pointed, but that's another story...
Anyway. Back to the question in hand: What might this meter actually be used for? A lengthy bit of Googling has lead to nothing but frustration, with no combination of words I can think of yielding anything of any use in identifying the type of equipment this instrument might belong to, or what it might have been used to measure. Even a 'reverse image search' has brought forth nothing. Nothing at all.
I did wonder if it might have been used with some sort of radar equipment, which I know Dad worked on, possibly in the fifties and sixties, but that's only a guess, and a maximum distance of 1500 yards does seem a little short for radar, don’t you think?
So, there we are then. That's that. For now at least...

Usual caveats etc.
The queen of flowers, the rose, has a poor relative, the wild rose. And not some distant, but the closest, if I may say so in relation to plants.
The rosehip is the father of the rose. Yes, yes ... Once upon a time, the first rose was bred from the wild rose. History does not remember the name of the gardener who created it or where it happened. It is only known that at least 4000 years ago. Although, it may very well be that it was created simply by nature.
So all the beauties of the rose came from a more than modest wild rose, which has a different name - “wild rose”.

У королевы цветов – розы есть бедный родственник шиповник. И не какой-нибудь дальний, а самый близкий, если так можно выразиться относительно растений.
Шиповник – отец розы. Да, да… Когда-то из шиповника была выведена первая роза. История не помнит имя садовника, который это создал или где это произошло. Известно только, что не менее 4000 лет назад. Хотя, очень может быть, что это создано просто природой.
Так что все красавицы розы произошли от более чем скромного шиповника, у которого существует другое название – «дикая роза».
Die Leistungen der Erzzüge in der Relation Hamburger Hafen - Salzgitter – Hamburger Hafen hatten und haben immer eine hohe Priorität auf dieser Strecke. Und wenn der Zug mal nicht im Plan war, dann wurde er beileibe nicht einfach an den Rand gestellt, sondern, wenn möglich, aufs „falsche Gleis“ geleitet, damit eine fliegende Überholung durch einen ICE ermöglicht wurde.
Radbruch an der Ladestraße, hört sich schon fast so wehmütig an wie Neustadt an der Knatter oder Pößneck o. Bahnhof?
Nun, so viel Poesie wohnte dieser Fotostelle am Rande Hamburgs dann doch nicht inne.
Geliebt oder gehaßt in der regionalen Szene, beschreibt diese Örtlichkeit dann vielleicht ein wenig besser?
Natürlich kann ich gar nicht unvoreingenommen sein, zu oft kam ich dort auf dem Heimwege wie zufällig vorbei und möglicherweise habe ich dort auch zu viele Stunden verbracht?
Aber wo gab es weit nach dem Jahrtausendwechsel noch Oberleitung mit Quertragwerken, alte Lichtsignaltechnik, die Bauform der Bahnsteiglampen und wie selbstverständlich funktionierende Bahnsteiguhren, niedrige Bahnsteige und von Wind & Wetter gegerbte Bahnsteighäuschen aus Waschbeton? Quasi ein letztes Refugium der alten Bundesbahn der 1970er und 1980er Jahre?
Dazu eng getakteter Verkehr mit allerlei abwechslungsreichen Leistungen.
Nun, der Fortschritt hat auch hier in voller Gänze Einzug gehalten und das ganze Ensemble ist vorbildlich mit allen Zipp & Zapp auf Neuzeit getrimmt worden.
Für 155 148 und ihren Zug drückte ich ein Jahr später letztmalig in Radbruch an der Ladestraße auf den Auslöser.
Seit dem war ich nicht mehr dort, und mein Heimweg führt jetzt oft über andere Wege, besser ist das wohl…

Bilder von den Nachtzügen auf der Relation nach Split sieht man sehr häufig, bietet doch Dalmatien unheimlich viele Motivmöglichkeiten. Nach ein paar Tagen in dieser herrlichen Gegend wollten wir uns aber auch mal für einen Tag die von Zagreb ostwärts führende E-Strecke Richtung Vinkovci anschauen, um insbesondere auch mal die hier eingesetzten E-Loks der Baureihe 1142 ablichten zu können. Von Zagreb bis Novska führen dabei zwei eingleisige Strecken, ab dort geht es zweigleisig weiter bis zur serbischen Grenze. Die Fernverkehrszüge verkehren über die nördliche Strecke über Dugo Selo, nur das Nachtzugpaar 1840/1841 (Split - Vukovar) nimmt den Laufweg über Sisak. Am Morgen des 23.08.2023 hatten wir es auf diesen Nachtzug abgesehen. Motivlich ist diese Gegend sehr schwierig, weil sich die Landschaft flach und unspektakulär zeigt. Bei Blinjski Kut fanden wir einen freien Abschnitt, wo 1142 001 mit dem B 1841 aus Split mithilfe des Hochstativs umgesetzt werden konnten.
