This image relates to my research question "Can you tell a person's sexuality by their clothes?" because it depicts a grown man in the stages of transforming himself into a drag queen. People assume that if you are a drag queen that automatically means you are gay. Now this is not the case, just because a man dresses like a woman or a woman dresses like a man, that does not mean that they are gay or lesbian. Most people that dress in drag do so because they find it fun and enjoy the attention it brings when they are in a drag show, or maybe it happens to be a turn on to their significant other. This is another reason I choose this question, because I wondered why when people see someone they think they understand as being gay, they instantly come to the conclusion that they are in fact gay.

My art work relates to an issue which concerns me deeply - the often unrecognised subject of child abuse and the long term related consequences. The dark side of the mask symbolises a front worn by the abused often throughout their entire life and behind which lies a dark and tragic history of mental and physical chaos. A closed mask, unseeing eyes, empty and emotionless. The light side of the mask reveals a blue ribbon which represents the tears which when allowed to flow release the 'inner knot' to free the long hidden fears, anxieties and loneliness. The history of child abuse is long and terrible but hope lies within an involvement of people in our communities who by wearing a blue ribbon create an awareness of the hidden tragedy, enabling the abused to reach out and embrace a new and happy life.

Every aging home has a relatable past, that old familiar face of history we all found ourselves in. Some kind of happy holidays for someone, sometime – if not the last generation to live here, then some other through the years. It's hard for most folks to value now over then, when looking back seems so warm and sheltering. I think of memories like hiding from the wind chill, the break is our skull and body heat keeps us safe from storms of the moment. Why embrace our very modern senses when recollection is such a comforting place? Nostalgia over presence is a familiar choice, one that worries more how we're perceived than what we've done to be seen that way. In her later years, my grandmother described warzone memories of Holland with more fondness than a peacetime present. But those were years of starvation, and crippling worries when her father was sent off in shackles, interned by the Nazis – and still, she felt better looking back. What's the explanation? It's not times that change, it's us. So with bright eyes trained to an ever-shifting passage, I believe this Christmas is as happy as any other already good and gone. Hold fast.

The Fay Thomas Collection includes family archives relating to the Thomas family. Moses Thomas (1825-1878) was a significant figure in the history of the area now known as the City of Whittlesea, Victoria, Australia. Thomas and Ann and their family lived at "Mayfield", Mernda, Victoria.

Miss Lily Thomas (1871-1946), Thomas and Ann’s fourth daughter lived there all her life. She collected postcards which her family and friends sent her on a very regular basis. It was an easy and enjoyable way to keep in touch. Production of postcards blossomed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lily’s collection encompasses the so-called Golden Age (1890-1915) with many postmarked 1906-1907. Some were sent to other members of the family.

The collection document the natural landscape as well as the built environment—buildings, gardens, parks, and tourist sites. Topographical Postcards showing street scenes and general views from Australian and international locations, some of which are artistic views. Popular postcard manufacturers such as Tuck’s Postcards are included in the collection.

Decorative cards, many embellished with floral motives (as a nod to the receiver Lily?) and embossing. Greeting cards are common for Christmas, New Year, Easter and of course birthdays.

Regular senders can be identified from Kyneton and the Great Ocean Road area, Victoria and there is a siginifant collection from Scotland (but not sent from there).

I love buildings and things because they usually last longer than we do, and I always wonder what they witnessed, what they know.

The missing piece of fence on 2nd street relates to this story of a bright young and very drunk guy who thought jumping over the fence would get him to the diner faster so he could have breakfast.

Well, instead, he made a calf kebab (we are talking human leg kind of calf, not baby cow) and they had to saw it off and send both him and attached fence to the hospital for removal.

I am sure the hospital breakfast was worth the trouble.

It isn't often that I find myself driven to re-read a book I first read nearly fifteen years ago. It was my experience of viewing Laurence Olivier's portrayal of a famous king as depicted in Shakespeare's play, Richard III, which led to my "re-reading." The book I refer to is The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey (a pseudonym) which was first published in 1951 and is still popular. Obviously, the title comes directly from the well-known old proverb "Truth is the daughter of time." This reference also relates to the popular comment "History is written by the victors!" It follows that history is not always accurate! The combination of wisdom in these two messages surely applies to the play Richard III which Shakespeare wrote early in his career, probably in 1593. Literary critics, like Isaac Asimov and Harold Bloom, have recognized that Shakespeare based his version of the actions and character of Richard III on very old sources. One is a "semi-contemporary" source, namely, Sir Thomas More. However, More was only five years old when Richard became king and was only eight when Richard died. Obviously, Thomas More had to draw on other sources rather than his own memories! In her book, J. Tey asserts that More "copies" John Morton's accounts of the life of Richard III. Since John Morton was aligned with the Tudors, his versions were "slanted" to say the least! Critics point out that Morton's accounts included "stories" that may have been only rumors or even outright lies!

In Josephine Tey's fiction book, classed as a mystery novel, she tackles this mystery from a modern viewpoint. She uses a 20th-century Scotland Yard detective named Grant to pursue and analyze all available evidence and draw conclusions that are far different from the ones we find in Shakespeare's play.

Shakespeare shows us a man who was a villain, wicked, greedy for power, cruel, and a merciless murderer. The research of Grant and his assistant, Bren Carradine, as presented by J. Tey gives us a very different picture. Their research produces a picture of Richard III as generous, wise, charming, courageous, and popular. Furthermore, they assert he was not a "humpback" and crippled but was actually a normal man.

No one can deny the effectiveness of Shakespeare's depiction of the evil Richard III as well as the effective portrayal of Richard by actors such as Laurence Olivier and Ian McKellan. Nevertheless, I find it fascinating to "see the other side of this character." I am not alone in this fascination, since over 4,000 people are members of the Richard III society, known as "Richardians," who claim it was Tudor propagandists who promoted the "unfair and untrue" characterization of Richard III.

Shakespeare's play, Richard III, has been popular for over four centuries! One might use another popular phrase to declare, "It has stood the test of time" on its literary and theatrical merits. Shakespeare fans plus mystery and history fans can expand their horizons by reading this book.

(Editor's note: The Daughter of Time is available at the Main Library in both print and audio versions, and Richard III is available on videocassette starring Ian McKellan.)

Relating to a discover of natural gas in Alberta, what it says there:

"CPR Langevin No. 1, Alberta's first natural gas discovery:

125 feet southwest of this location the first discovery of natural gas in what became the province of Alberta was made in December 1883 by the Canadian Pacific Railway while drilling for water.

On January 8, 1884 the gas ignited and the subsequent fire destroyed the rig.

Eight feet west of the original well site, the railway company drilled a second well in 1884 (CPR Langevin No. 2) from which gas was produced and piped to the company's buildings then located on the right of way, this second well thus became Alberta's first producing gas well, providing gas to railway company buildings for over 50 years."

Road trip day! 12 hours of driving, covering 640 kilometres of southern Alberta scenery, not going to the usual places...

While visiting San Francisco I was invited to attend a panel discussion on a poster series relating to the Summer of Love. The posters were created by artists to commemorate the event and its 50th anniversary. I was actually surprised to find that this discussion was about some of the posters that I had seen while riding the streetcars along Market Street and craning to get a better look at them.

During the discussion the artists talked about things like their processes, ideals, history, and collective memory. Two ideas that stood out were those of "collective memory" and feminism. Collective memory is a topic that seems a little bit odd, and controversial at times - as it tends to be about what everyone remembers, and can sometimes be mistaken for groupthink.

The second idea was more about feminism. The first in this series of posters was designed and created by Kate Haug who seemed be a bit of a feminist, but in a good way. Typically feminism (from a male point of view) is about destroying all the men, and allowing women to control everything and raise a bunch of ignorant, loveless children. And somehow men and women are supposed to coexist. But I'm not a supporter of "Destroy the Men" feminism, while there are lots of men/fetishists who are. But I did gain a new perspective on feminism from Haug, as maybe there are different...chapters? Instead of "Destroy the Men", she tends to be more of a "Button Your Blouse" feminist, which probably could coexist in a modern society. Although Haug's posters were not so much about feminism, but about the people in a society and how they shape and contribute to it.

All-in-all, the discussion was very informative about much of the history of The Summer of Love, as well as the people and personalities back then. And I came away with some new perspective of ideas.

The Shah-i Zinda complex consists of a narrow 200-meter alley or corridor, lined with some 40 funerary buildings, nearly half of which were revealed in excavations. The standing monuments can be grouped in three clusters, marked by a succession of three chartaqs (domed crossings). The name Living king (Shah-i Zinda), relates to a tradition that the man buried in Mausoleum 18, Qusam ibn Abbas, was "martyred" (murdered) during one of his sermons or prayers, at the hands of Samarkand people who were irreconcilable with Islam at that time. When he had finished his sermon, he removed his own head from his shoulders, took it under his arm and disappeared through a narrow slot in the cave, where he still allegedly continues to live today. Hence the name Shah-i Zinda, which means "Living King" (www.people-travels.com/uzbekistan-cities/samarkand/sights...).

After the Mongol sack of Samarkand in the early 13th cent and following the relocation of central Samarkand from Afrasiyab hill to its present place, the site of Shakh-i Zinda was turned into a necropolis. The first tombs were clustered around Qusam’s shrine at the top of the hill, and the later structures descended the southern slope in a long string. The bulk of the structures were constructed between 1370 and 1405, mostly for the female members of the Timurid family. The final form of the complex was shaped in 1434-5, when Ulugh Beg, Timur’s grandson and the governor of Transoxiana (r.1409-1447), erected a monumental gateway at the southern end of the alley, which provided a well-defined ceremonial entrance for the complex and linked the necropolis to the city. Later interventions had minimal impacts on the general organization of the site.

Kick Butts Day 2014. Representatives from the Department of Public Health (DPH) today joined more than 250 young people from across the Commonwealth at the State House for the national observance of Kick Butts Day, recognizing the contributions of teenagers in smoking cessation and prevention efforts.

The young people participating in today’s event are part of DPH’s youth movement, The 84, which represents the 84 percent of young people in Massachusetts who don’t smoke.

High school students involved in The 84 have been educating their communities and their local lawmakers about issues relating to tobacco and, working with local health boards and other programs; have promoted effective tobacco prevention strategies in their communities. Members of The 84 Movement have been vital in fighting the way tobacco industry markets its products to youth.

SCREENSHOTS 1-10 in this album (the original post):

The screenshots document that the similar settings, when used in Second Life and Opensim generate different results. This behavior persists since the latest beta release and it is present also in the final version. Firestom 64 bit for Second Life and Opensim was used to create these snapshots. First the clean reinstall of beta version was performed and no settings were automatically restored from the previous installation.

Uploads taken at the Opensim grid are not being uploaded for me with the best possible quality. To get them online I must save them first to disk. This way the procedure is longer, not so comfortable and the result does not contain data about the place where it was taken.
