This weekend (Friday 24th to Sunday 26th of January) is the annual 'RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch'. An opportunity for the great Britsh public to spend an hour counting birds in their garden (or elsewhere) and a chance for the RSPB to drum up new members.

I'm glad I spent my hour counting avian visitors yesterday as today's weather has been absolutely appalling and consequently this morning I haven't noticed any feathered feeders!

Under strict no duplicates rules, in my hour yesterday I noted:

Blackbird ♂ x1

Blue Tit x4

Chaffinch ♀ x1

Coal Tit x1

Collared Dove x2

Dunnock x1

Great Tit x2

Jay x1

Long Tailed Tit x5

Robin x1

Song Thrush x1

Starling x1

Wood Pigeon x3

These numbers do not reflect the maximum numbers that usually visit on a daily basis and sadly a few of my regulars were absent.

The Royal Forest of Steam returns for 2019!

Our steam extravaganza will take place on Friday 7th - Sunday 9th June, with up to 4 locomotives in steam.

We are pleased to welcome BR 'Large Prairie' no. 5199 from the Llangollen Railway, the first time any member of this class has visited the DFR in steam! Built in 1934, no. 5199 ended her British Rail career at Gloucester Horton Road in 1963 before being returned to working order in North Wales 40 years later.

Our second visitor this year is Hunslet '48150' class no. 18 "Jessie"! A regular visitor to the DFR in her previous guise as Thomas the Tank Engine, "Jessie" has recently been returned to her original saddle tank form and smartly outshopped in her eyecatching East Moors Steelworks livery.

Visiting locomotives will be accompanied by our home fleet of locomotives:

- Ex-GWR 'Small Prairie' no. 5541

- LMR 'Austerity' no. WD152 "Rennes"

This year, visitors will have the exclusive opportunity to visit the locomotive restoration shed, where the DFLGs twin Pannier tanks no. 9681 and 9682 will be on display for the first time. No. 9681 is due to return to steam later in 2019. It may also be possible to view overhaul progress on 14xx no. 1466, from the Didcot Railway Centre.

Hundreds joined us for the Pontifical High Mass on the feast of Candlemas on Sunday, February 2nd.

Candlemas commemorates the purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is also known as "The Presentation of Our Lord." This feast traditionally closes the Christmas season. The Holy Mass was celebrated by Bishop Joseph N. Perry.

The name Candlemas comes from the activities associated with the feast. It came to be known as the Candle Mass. A procession with lighted candles is the distinctive rite. This procession into the church for Mass commemorates Christ’s entrance into the temple.

Simeon, upon seeing the Messiah, gave thanks to the Lord, singing a hymn now called the Nunc Dimittis which is chanted at this particular Mass:

Lord, now you let your servant go in peace, your word has been fulfilled: My own eyes have seen the salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of every people: a Light to reveal you to the nations and the Glory of your people Israel.

And so, regular boring winter is upon us again. The white snowy winter so far has tranformed into mushy, slippery and wet conditions. Skates, instead of shoes, would have been useful today.

DĂa de las Fuerzas Armadas, Melilla 2012, Regulares.

Regular! Yes, but how regular is regular? That is, how frequently should vehicle owners give their cars scrub-downs? The general rule of thumb is to wash your car every two weeks or so. Of course, there are special circumstances that might increase or decrease that frequency. If you live in a part of the country where some of the aforementioned hazards are quite common, you’ll need to wash your vehicle more regularly. By contrast, if you keep it in a garage and only drive once or twice a month, such regular washing might not be necessary. What’s important is that you take care of your vehicle—yes, even its outside. Washing your car frequently is a great and ultimately inexpensive way of protecting your investment in it. Make sure you’re setting aside some time for routine car washes!
