When we were visiting in November, the crowds were lighter. I've never been during the high season, but have heard about the crowds, pigeons and stifling heat. We almost cancelled the trip to Venice as we were reading about Acqua Alta (high water) in Paris. I'm glad we didn't. The conditions were more than perfect. The best part was finding quiet canals like this one to enjoy on a mid-day stroll.
Acqua Alta is when the lagoon water level rises above the level of the squares and streets, flooding them. It can happen several times a year, usually in the colder months. Acqua alta usually lasts a few hours and coincides with high tide.

I keep asking myself why I take pictures. Why am I photographer? The truth is....I'm not sure. I've always liked creating things and being an introvert, photography was something I could do on my own.
I enjoy documenting the world around me and a lot of my photos are around my house because I just don't get out that often or I don't bring my camera with me enough when I do get out.
One of the best things about being a generalist in photography, I can shoot whatever I want which is great but it also means I'll never be really good one particular genre. I've never really been good at anything in life, photography has really been the only thing that people actually seem to like from me. That makes me happy and brings joy to my life when people enjoy my work.
As you may have noticed, I'm not as active on Flickr as I once was. Flickr has become a big time suck for me, I was spending hours and hours a day looking at other peoples photos and usually commenting on them but that was taking time away from me and It may sound selfish but I need time to work on me to become a better person and a better photographer. I also want to get back into making YouTube videos as well.
I don't know. I was Lightroom and I saw this photo of me being reflected in this hubcap and kind of had one of those self reflection moments about why I take pictures. I've been too hard on myself lately when it comes to photography. It's suppose to be a fun thing, I shouldn't stress out over it.
I realized that I focused so much on the numbers and that's not what photography is about.
So I want to have fun taking pictures again, I don't want to think about whether or not people will like this photo or not because in the end, it doesn't matter. I'm the only one who has to like it and if others don't, they that's fine too. I enjoy sharing my photos with the world because that one photo could make a difference in someone out there. It could put a smile on that one person that's having a real bad day. That's worth it to me.

We just announced several new workshops for May & June! We'll be going to Reflection Canyon and Coyote Gulch on May 16-18. I took this shot of Reflection Canyon last spring and it really lived up to its name with crystal clear reflections! The Escalante workshops will be held on May 11-15 and June 9-13 and will focus on night photography.
You'll want to photograph the wild and vast Grand Staircase Escalante before it all changes! You've probably heard that it will be reduced in size and significant infrastructural changes have been planned for oil, gas, and mining activities. These events will undoubtedly change this uniquely beautiful landscape with increased human foot-print, light pollution, and contamination. As it is right now, the Grand Staircase has the darkest skies in the lower 48 states and is THE mecca for night photography.

Our Daily Challenge - Reflective or Reflection
I've wanted to do a glasses reflection for a while so when this challenge came up I new exactly what I wanted to do. But what should be reflected.... Me? The camera?........
But credit where credit is due. Trevor Williams had the same idea with his two photos Trust me... and buyer beware. These technically brilliant images are two of my most favorite images on flickr. I highly recommend that you check them out. They definitely helped my inspiration.

Apple Core - Canon 580exII 1/8 power brolly box high camera right.

So this apple core would match I had to orientate and light it from the opposite, then flip it in photoshop. Also I waited a day to photograph the core so I would look rotten.
The how to's:
There are plenty of tutorials for this but I pretty much did this.
And I used the Topaz filter to get the crazy colour and detail.
Took a trip up to Bath at the weekend and had a wander round Prior Park with its amazing Palladian bridge. The colours and light were awesome! Designed by Alexander Pope and Capability Brown for Ralph Allen in 1734, the gardens are now owned by the National Trust. The mansion house which is at the top of the valley is now a school. Ralph Allen's main claim to fame was reforming the British postal system.
