Reflection of San Remo Towers on the Central Park Lake, New York.

The 2nd largest man-made body of water in the Park (the Reservoir is the largest), the Lake was created originally from a large swamp.

The most popular use of the lake today is for row boating and the sturdy vessels can be rented at the Loeb Boathouse at the northeast corner of the Lake. Probably the best way to experience the variety of terrains that surround the man made body of water is a boat trip, and there are few greater pleasures to be had in Central Park then a leisurely cruise around the shoreline. Around the lake you can see places as diverse as the Bethesda Terrace, the Loeb Boathouse, the Bow Bridge or Hernshead, not to mention the fauna which includes ducks, mallards and a rather extended family of turtles. For the many years preceding the construction of Wollman Rink in 1951 the Lake was also the center of ice-skating in the park. This was a wildly popular diversion, especially at the turn of the century when as many as 40,000 people were reported to have skated in one day. It offered New Yorkers valuable exercise, as well as a socially acceptable place to socialize (although for many years one end of the lake was designated strictly for use by women).

I've got a thing about trying to record perfect reflections on the little pond in back of me. You'd be surprised how frequently the reflection has a tiny ripple from somewhere and isn't so good. I'm not sure I could ever do any better than this.

We headed up to Picture Lake and Artist's Point this weekend, and lucked out with perfect weather, fall colors, great clouds, almost no wind, and countless delicious blueberries and huckleberries at every turn.

This lake is right on the side of the road in Heather Meadows, and the conditions combined to make for a beautiful picture. The elevation here is about 5000 feet, with Mount Shuksan towering at 10,000 feet.

This shot uses a 1.2 stop Grad-ND filter to darken the "real" image making the reflection look nearly the same strength at the actual real thing.

There's very little post-processing here other than cloning out some grass that was floating on the water and lightening up a tree. The reflections and colors are all real.

Ricoh grd4

It's been a while!

i'm going to have to get used to this new flickr interface. it's actually pretty good.

My Ricoh GRD4 is now dead. unable to obtain sharp photos. there is definitely a big problem.

too bad. i truly think it was my favorite camera. non intrusive, silent, snappy.... and the list goes on. i still don't know if i'll buy another one. the new GR system is now here. but there are so many other cameras i would want to try.

surprisingly, i have been very tempted to go back to my DSLR for a while. unfortunately, the lens i would love to use on my 5dmkII would be the 50mm 1.2L

i will still process my remaining shots taken with the GRD4. still a few to go.

A summer storm approaching on the evening I captured this shot. I was heading home and noticed the clouds forming near a local pond. Of course I had to stop and wait, watch and snap along the way.
