Before air freight and the highways took control, the railroads moved premium perishable shipments in refrigerator cars or express reefers.
This is my version of an old 40ft reefer. Wood-sided w/1x8 tiles. This was also the first model i built and ordered from the Lego factory.
If you're gonna go, go all the way! I think it all started with light yellow 1x1x5 bricks. I wanted to build a reefer with them, but had no greater plans. Once it started to take shape (with black ends and roof), it got me thinking. When I tried the blue roof, it was a eureka moment. It reminded me that it'd been a while since I'd had a Moon Pie, and my last Moon Pie Tshirt had died years earlier, and it was about time for a new hat anyway. There's a saying that Moon Pies get better the closer you are to Chattanooga, but with the internet, Chattanooga is always close.

This is the outgrowth of my LDD 40' wood sided reefer. This one is in the 'Pacific Fruit Co.' colors and someday i'll make stickers. And maybe LDD will support it one day!
This HO scale refrigerator car was a special run from Sunshine Models. It's a resin kit but included a large number of photo-etched parts, making it Pierre Oliver's all-time favorite Sunshine kit.

This vessel came out of Gibraltar waters at speed to enter a shipping lane in the Strait of Gibraltar. Looks like it has seen better days.

On the 4th March 2017 the reefer "Andalucia Star" (1991, 12,714DWT) shelters in Lyme Bay whilst enroute from Russia to Peru.
Reefers are becoming rare as more refrigerated cargo is moved by container so even if with awkward light it was worth a photo. The traditional Blue Star Line name brings back memories of the Falklands veteran that then gave so much pleasure to many as the "Orange Star" before being scrapped in 2010.

Gulf, Mobile and Ohio version of the 'Getting Started with Lego Trains' reefer. I have stickers for this one, but the original is so nice it doesn't really need them. The ends and trucks are different from the original, but only minor. The roof is very different, but in the end, i could have made it simpler with a very similar look.
