The "worst" place I have ever visited:

The railway spur, used to bring supplies - and prisoners - to the main camp.

I had read about the Holocaust in considerable detail, so I knew about the "transportation" aspect long before arriving here.

However, I could not avoid the emotional impact of this sight . . .

Mass murder as carried out by the German occupiers in Poland could not have taken place without railway transport. Trains were an essential element of the "means," and facilitated the "locations," the "rate" and the enormous "scale."

However, there can be no doubt that, without the deportation trains, the Holocaust would have proceeded nonetheless, but by different means (e.g. greater use of mass shootings, as used following the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 June).

Without trains, the locations of the murders might ("m-i-g-h-t") have been more dispersed - out of necessity. Without trains, it is not likely that the Germans could have transported so many people to the six death camps in Poland - despite the fact at least half of all Jews murdered during the Holocaust were from Poland.

Without trains, the rate of the Holocaust murders might ("m-i-g-h-t") have been slowed. The majority of Holocaust victims were murdered during 1942, but the killings continued until 1945 May. Given the time frame, a reduction of the rate of the murders would not necessarily have reduced the total number of victims.

One of the most striking aspects of that day was the silence. There were few other visitors, and road traffic in the area was very light, so I heard neither voices nor traffic noise. I recall neither wind nor breeze - but the one sound I do remember was haunting - indeed, chilling.

PKP (Polskie Koleje Państwowe, "Polish State Railways") had a large railway yard within about two km (one mile) of the camps. Back then, PKP still had steam locomotives in service. I heard the shrill, high-pitched sound of steam locomotive whistles several times while at Auschwitz - not "loud," but noticeable. Perhaps the murdered victims cry out in anguish, a sound barely audible to the living.

United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) in partnership with Universidad de los Andes (UNIANDES) convenes a three-day conference on reducing inequality, held in Bogotá, Colombia, 5-7 October 2022.

As new research uncovers the many negative impacts that high inequality can have, a consensus is emerging that achieving SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities is a global goal of critical importance.

The programme addresses major themes in inequality across keynote lectures, parallel sessions, and a policy dialogue event. Speakers include leading scholars of inequality, including Raquel Fernández and Francisco H. G. Ferreira. In addition, the VII Colombian Economic Congress forms part of the programme.
