Jan. 1891 write-up for MILLER'S REDUCING WRENCH, a ratchet with several attachments for adapting to size, use as a ratchet drill, etc. Miller's early patents -- 239,972, 243,942, and 253,549] [reflect evolution of this wrench.
The "socket" attachment appears in patent no. 445,451. The ratchet action appears in modified form in patent no. 485,290. At least one example of the ratchet in this write-up is known in the "wrench collector" community. -- see 2nd image in the entry for 253,549.
