This is the Trojan nuclear cooling tower when it was demolished in 2006. It was hard getting a spot to take a photo from with thousands of other people who had lined the roadway to get a view.

On September 19, 2016, a woman's body was found in the Rideau River in Ottawa. It was that of Inuk artist Annie Pootoogook, known and celebrated in Canada and around the world for her graphic works, both colourful and realistic. The paradox between her tragic disappearance and her great success profoundly affected me. How was her remarkable destiny reduced to that of the hundreds of Aboriginal women and girls murdered or gone missing in the country?

My sensitivity to the cause of the First Nations led me to broach the painful subject of residential schools with the artistic project Broken Circle (2016). This time, the dramatic fate of Annie Pootoogook drove me to want to know more about the Arnait - "women" in Inuktitut.

All at once, I felt the dread of the misery they had inherited as well as their courage and resilience, tinged with a joyful and independent strength. I also understood that they are the fragile and inalienable vehicles of the values and traditions of their culture.

At the heart of Place des Arts, a public gathering place that shines a light on art, Arnait is meant to showcase the bright horizons of their truth and break down preonceptions.

- Karine Giboulo

Place des Arts is please to present Arnait by Karine Giboulo in its exhibition hall, a space for citizen reflection open to all. Central to her process is a friendship developed through her meetings with the women involved in this exhibition, some of whom collaborated in the creation of the works presented. A tribute to Inuit women, the diversity of their inner and outer landscapes, their solidarity, their light.

This exhibition is part of the Place des Arts' Access to the Performing Arts Program.

Born in 1980 in Sainte-Emélie-de-l'Energie, Karine Giboulo lives and works in Montreal. For the past decade, she has been creating work in a variety of media, from paintings and works on paper to three-dimensional art. Ms. Giboulo has gained particular attention for her dioramas of miniature human environments. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the United States, including the Musée de la civilisation, Quebec City (2015), the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinburg, Ontario (2013-2014), the Menciel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (2010), 21c Museum, Louisville, Kentucky (2010), and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (2010, 2013). Karine Giboulo is also the 2011 winner of the prestigious Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics. In 2009, she earned second place in the impulse section of the PULSE NEW YORK International art fair. Her work has been supported by grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. Her recent works, What Is my Name, All You Can Eat and Le Village électronique, are part of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and 21C Museum collections, respectively.
