Crossbills have specialized beaks evolved to open pine cones so they can remove the nuts with their tongues. The birds migrate around the pole depending on where the pine nuts are plentiful. Cool birds!

My Uni staircase project: this is in the fire escape of the Physics building. I took quite a few from this location - all slightly different perspectives. This was the best composition, but was also the ONLY one out of focus (the camera has focussed on the rail). So I will call it artistic licence that that really i've meant to focus on the red railing up close and make it the subject ... (note to self - always make sure you've had coffee BEFORE I take photos ...).

It's coming to the end of 'Poppy Season' so I needed to get my annual image in the bag. This one is shot against a wheat field backdrop and I've applied a texture because I like the mood it projects.

These red leaves are from the rose family and are one of the last leaves each year in the forest to turn red and fall off. I used a flash, shining through these leaves, to bring our their color and contrast them with the grey sky. Positioning the flash outside the range of view was not an easy job with this wide angle lens (15 mm).
