Recycling in Westport, NZ

Recycling is a big thing here in China. There are guys like this all over town, I read somewhere that there are entire communities dedicated to recycling mountains of trucked-in trash, and there are even little old ladies peeking in all the rubbish bins looking for empty plastic bottles to sell for 2 cents each.

I used a hole punch on some old Christmas paper (left) and an old greeting card (right), then adhered it to bottle caps. Could be used as jewelry (earrings, perhaps), or as ornaments for the tree.

My name is Costas Schuler, graphic designer, recycle artist and funny man, also known as The Pen Guy creator of the Mercedes Pens Art Car covered in 10,000 pens.

In 2005 I had a fantastic idea to collect pens and glue them on my 1981 Mercedes Benz 300SD, affectionately called the Mercedes Pens. So far I have managed to collect over 70,000 pens locally and from around the world, the first 10,000 used pens ending up on the art car. Now that the Mercedes Pens is totally covered in pens I am launching phase two of my master plan to find homes for the other 60,000+ used pens I have piled up and over flowing at my house.

My solution is to create beautiful art using used pens and put them up for display in all over the world. I recently got about 30,000 from terracycle and in return created a penting for their conference room. The Second one is currently on display at the Greentivites exhibit at the sonoma county fair. I have many more pens and many more ideas for murals coming up.

I plan to continue collecting pens locally and from around the world so please gather all those old pens cluttering up your space and send them to:

Rubbermaid Stackable Recyclers make recycling easy! Three sizes can be stacked and interchanged to suit your sorting needs. The flip door makes unloading recyclables a breeze. Stickers allow you to label your bin so you can see if you are sorting glass, paper, plastic, etc. The hood snaps securely to the base so you can transport your recyclables to a facility if necessary.

We recycle at least half of our domestic waste. We send so little to landfill that we only need a small wheelie bin, and then we often only half fill it. I try to avoid buying any food products that have used excessive packaging.

They were collecting anything that had the American flag on it. I had some American flag christmas tree lights, the previous tenant at my flat had left behind. I ran back home and got them, and gave them to these guys. They were very pleased, and let me take their picture. At Lombard recycling day 2005.

Innovative green, ecological, art and fashion, real functionally and utilitarian recycled musical instruments ( violins, guitars, pianos, cello, etc), in original classic or prototype designs, shapes and appearance, made from used and alternative materials, such as paper, cardboard, fabrics,(denim), advertising banners, synthetic leather, etc. When art is combined with the ecology, coexists with the music and becomes a part of everyday life style.

All the musical instruments is made from this used material (not a covered wood), also the neck and the peg in the violin and guitar, except the fingerboard (wood). All the piano is made from recycled material only, paper, cardboard, banner, with digital piano keyboard.

Challenge was to make a booklet from recycled materials, and fill it with random facts. I was inspired by a post at the 365: Make a Book A Day blog, and made this little booklet out of a coffee shop cup cozy and various rescued papers in my stash. See the inspiration book here: Little Jotter Notebook.
