Routine tissue culture media filtration and also, a fluid change of tissue cultures within the Sterile Room of the Tissue Culture laboratory. With the aid of special electronic filters, bacteriostatic paint and regulation of positive pressure within this room, bacterial colony growth has been reduced to less than 0.6 colonoy within the entire room per hour.

(In the F/D cycle) or (in the drying of tissues) the frozen tissues are placed on the upper shelf. Under a vacuum the water in the ice phase within the tissues is removed in vapor form and trapped on the lower shelves due to a difference in temperature. "Freeze-drying." As the F/D cycle continues the upper plate upon which the tissues are placed is warmed to room temperature, while the temperature of the lower plates remains unchanged. The tissues continue to dry and the water (ice) removed is trapped by freezing on the lower plates. Process continues until Residual Moisture is approximately 3 percent. One respirometer is designed for measuring oxygen utilization and carbon dioxide production of tissues at refrigeration temperatures (4 C) and a second respirometer is available to tissue at body temperatures. With a respirometer, the nutritional requirements of preserved tissues may be defined, resulting in a refinement of preservation methods to prolong the periods of storage with maintenance of cell viability.
