Amar, a leprosy patient at TLM's hospital in Kolkata

Heydi is indeed a brave girl. She had been all by herself and was crossing a small stream when she fell and cut her right hand on a glass bottle in the water. Since then, she has had difficulties grabbing and holding things. Today, when she got ready for surgery, she walked all the way to the operating room all by herself – Dad was sound asleep and she did not want him to be woken up. Instead, she bravely waited in the holding area until the doc came to take her into the operating room.

Detail of tree mural I painted. This was so fun I think I'll do it to my new place (whenever I get it).

My trip was also very much enriched through my translator, Dr. Hao. She translated everything for me, the therapists, patients, and family. But she also taught me so much about Vietnam - the people and culture - which was invaluable and enriching for me. Thank you, Dr. Hao!

A Syrian. Joined the protests and was seized and tortured, by the authorities. Hot coals and boiling water were poured over his feet. He filmed demonstrators as they lay dying.

And lots of question and answer sessions...I found these to be helpful as it addressed the therapists' immediate needs. All the therapists are so enthusiastic in wanting to learn more especially when further study and learning is limited due to resources.

Other conditions include constriction bands squeezing on tissue and inhibiting normal growth in the hands...

Also after clinic day, patients keep walking in to be seen by our team. Here, our plastic surgeon Os is sitting in the office screening a new patient to approve him for surgery.

When we arrived at the hospital, we were suprised to find a big banner thanking us right below the hospital sign.

The finished product: an entirely hand-crafted rear end. Side and rear windows of plexiglass; main rear panel fashioned from plywood and spray-painted grey to match the car; taillights from a marine supply shop (to ensure waterproofness); 2x4 for a bumper. Cops loved to pull me over, but were never able to ticket me for anything. (Seen here after a winter of driving, with duct tape reinforcing the plexiglass in spots.)

Solimar is waiting in the holding area. For her, going to the operating room is almost a routine, at only 7 years of age, she has already had 6 operations on her cleft palate. Since she lives on the Atlantic coast, it is a long way to get to the hospital, one day by horse and another by bus. Still, she takes it easy and looks forward to getting over with this next operation.

Proper stretches, recognizing returning function and helping to facilitate muscles and normal function through activities is important. Here, Quyen, his therapist is trying out his new skills.
