LOS ANGELES--U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and Los Angeles County officials broke ground Feb. 22 on a project designed to restore degraded habitat in the San Fernando Valley.
Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Public Works Deputy Director Mark Pestrella and District Commander Col. Mark Toy ceremonially turned dirt for the start of the $7 million Tujunga Wash Ecosystem Restoration project that will extend greening along the sides of a 3/4-mile stretch of concrete channel that carries runoff from Hansen Dam to the Los Angeles River.
Corps contractors will construct a meandering manmade stream, complete with native riparian vegetation and pedestrian pathways, on the west bank of the channel between Vanowen St. and Sherman Way. The east bank will be planted with native, drought-tolerant perennials and shrubs. The restoration project will connect to the county's Tujunga Wash Greenway project just to the south, creating a riparian habitat corridor nearly 2.5 miles long.
"Every segment of this wash that we've restored has had their neighborhood just thrilled with the beautification," said Yaroslavsky. "It's just an improvement of the quality of life."
Community residents Stan and Lynne Friedman, among the nearly a dozen community members in attendance at the ceremony, couldn't have agreed more with Yaroslavsky. They've lived along the barren channel for nearly 40 years.
"We're pretty excited about the project," Stan said. "We think it's a great idea."
"It'll be nice to look out at and take a walk in," added Lynne.
Toy told the residents and county partners in the audience that the project will effectively combine flood risk management with ecosystem restoration and recreation.
"We owe this to you, to create a community that you can walk down and enjoy the great outdoors," said Toy. "We have so much momentum right now with the LA River Watershed, not only with America's Great Outdoors Initiative, but the Urban Waters Federal Partnership Program."
Both programs share goals that include reconnecting people to their waterways and promoting water conservation.
According to Pestrella, the project brings multiple benefits that will serve as a model for a sustainable and healthy stream system in a dense, urban area of the valley.
"That water will eventually someday become part of the drinking water here in LA," said Pestrella. "It'll also help us with pollution issues. As pollution reaches the channel and we bring the water up onto the top of the channel, it's recharged eliminating a number of pollutants before it reaches our groundwater again."
Tujunga Wash was channelized in the 1950's curbing flooding in the developing area, but also halting the wash's natural function. Some of that function will be restored, providing opportunities for migratory bird nesting, wildlife movement, recreation and education, none of which will reduce the capacity of the flood control system.
The Corps is funding 75 percent of the project costs under its Continuing Authorities Program, Section 1135 of the Water Resources Development Act, that allows improvement of the quality of the environment in the public interest. Los Angeles County Flood Control District, which operates and maintains the wash, will fund the remaining 25 percent of the total project costs. Construction is scheduled to be completed this summer.

Such a lovely night reconnecting with old friends. I don't have a picture of the party, but here's the bunt cake they sent us home with :-)
This was the second painting I did by mouth. It shows a stemcell reconnecting nerves, allowing the axons to send messages.
During the Royalty Theater presentation by ex-scientologists about the Scientology cult's human rights abuses and criminal activites, a few of us stayed outside with picket signs and flyers. This obviously emaciated SeaOrg scientologist with his ipod walked by with blinders on, refusing to so much as look.
This used to be their main low rank Sea Org uniform on the streets of Clearwater, but then they introduced a blue shirt version, which reflects the rank-organization the cult has. The highest level in the SeaOrg wear quasi-military naval-esque uniforms, gold epaulets and all. Learn more about the third straight month of global Anonymous protests against the scientology cult here: www.whyweprotest.net
Several Scientology "FLAG busses" passed by that same intersection and some of the passengers did look at the message in the signs. If Anonymous helped save one life or reconnects one family today, it was worth it.

Enjoy this full photo album of "Bunker Down”, our impromptu art event at Battery Chester in San Francisco’s Land’s End on Labor Day weekend.
Kudos to our friend Dr. Really (a.k.a Freddy Hahne), for masterfully organizing this surreal happening, with the help of Pataphysical Studios, our art collective! It was such a wonderful way to play and reconnect with each other in this dreamlike setting. :)
The event paid tribute to French poet Alfred Jarry, the founder of ‘Pataphysics, who inspired the Dada and Surrealist movements. Many of us read quotes from Jarry and his legendary character, the grotesque Père Ubu. On our makeshift stage, Dr. Fabio (a.k.a Fabrice Florin) and the Queen of the Desert (a.k.a. Priscilla Wheeler) re-enacted Ubu's mad quest for power, comparing it to Donald Trump’s own descent into darkness -- in both French and English. Thanks to all of you who booed, chanted and cheered along with us!
Many of our artist friends from Burning Man and Grateful Dead movements joined our celebration — including luminaries like artist David Best, musician David Gans and many more creative minds. Tip of the hat to our pals to Dr. Rindbrain (a.k.a. Howard Rheingold) for punctuating our performances with his magical drum, Dr. Tout d'Suite (a.k.a. Janey Fritsche) and Dr. Skidz (a.k.a. Marshall Smith) for contributing their fine paintings, to Dr. Helvetica (a.k.a. Kathy Lassen-Hahne), Dr. JudyJudy (Judy Rheingold) and Tory Farms for serving such delicious treats, to Dr. Figurine for bringing her paper bag masks — and to everyone who helped make this community event such a success!
Our experimental event demonstrated how the Golden Gate's military fortifications can be turned into incredible art and theatrical spaces! They're already filled with fantastic graffiti art, and can be quickly repurposed with original paintings, performance art and interactive exhibits to create an experience that’s truly out of this world. We may host more events like these in these exceptional settings.
Thanks to Phyllis Florin, Tim Pozar, Freddy Hahne, Stephanie Levene, Evelyn Messinger, Susana Millman, Vickisa Feinberg and Anne Coreo for their wonderful photos and videos of this historic occasion. This photo album was edited by Fabrice Florin. Vive la ‘Pataphysique!

This is a recreation of an older painting. The original painting was the second painting I did by mouth. It shows a stemcell reconnecting nerves, allowing the axons to send messages past the injured area.
I created this version on my iPad, for inclusion to my sketchbook. The concept behind this drawing was inspired by a documentary I watched, shortly after my accident. The documentary was a "60 Minutes" episode about stem cell research. In the episode, they interviewed representatives from a company called Geron, which had successfully reconnected injured spinal cords in rats. The researcher, Dr. Hans Keirstead was very inspiring and hopeful for a cure, for humans. I've been following his work ever since I saw that original program.

E hasn't seen this dude in a while. They've been friends for a long time, but have moved away from the convenience of across the street or in the neighborhood. So when he was going to be around, we made it a surprise. It was awesome to watch and listen to them reconnect after so long.
On Monday, November 25, 2019, USDA Rural Development Administrator for Rural Utilities Service Chad Rupe announced a $5.13 million investment in broadband infrastructure in rural Utah and Colorado. The grants, made through the ReConnect pilot program, went to Beehive Broadband of Lake Point, Utah for projects impacting Box Elder, Wayne, and Garfield Counties including the community of Snowville, Utah; and to Emery Telecommunications of Orangeville, Utah for a project impacting eastern San Juan County, Utah and Dolores County Colorado including the community of Dove Creek. These projects will be used to install fiber to the premises to allow for high speed broadband capacity in significantly rural areas. This will have a positive impact on schools, rural small businesses, and public safety. Joined by USDA Rural Development State Director for Utah Randy Parker, Beehive Broadband CEO Cameron Francis, and Emery Telecommunications CEO Brock Johanson, Rupe announced the investment will impact over 675 households over the scope of the projects.
