I got up early early to do this so that I could have time when I get home from work to spend solely with Anthony. We've been married 8 months today - we like to celebrate the 8's. We got married on 08-08-08 :) Sappy? yes. oh well!

update - Anthony just sent me a bunch of calla lillies at work for our 8 month, which was our wedding flower. even sappier? yes. oh well :)

While walking the Rim Trail with a view looking to the east-southeast across the edge of the cliff-face and canyon wall. About a minute prior to capturing this image, I’d been focusing on ravens that had been flying over this point and used a layered approach with the nearby cliff-face and more distant one. Here I focused on just capturing the landscape present with all the different trees and plant-life present across the canyon wall as well as extending around and beyond. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Found this off a Blog and wanted to share:

In essence, our bodies (besides being a vessel and a physical home for our transient souls) are expressions of our consciousness.

When our consciousness is in a state of alignment, congruent with our purpose, or the spiritual and material aspect of the self, it will reflect positively in the way we experience ourselves.

But when we aren’t in alignment, our consciousness will reflect confusion, layers of distortion, and imbalances. One of the many ways this manifests negatively is in our bodies and the way we view ourselves. When we hate our bodies, it’s because we aren’t in alignment.

Being face-to-face with our nakedness can be a tool for rebalancing and reconnecting to our Self and our purpose. Aligning everything in this way can look like acceptance and love for what is—nothing more and nothing less.

Being naked is about undoing all the beliefs that have stemmed from social conditioning.

I put in some road miles today. Most of my running is on the trails now that I am here in Boise, but back in Chicago when I started running it was all on the road. It felt like reconnecting with an old friend.

Scientific research has explored grounding for inflammation, cardiovascular disease, muscle damage, chronic pain, and mood.

The central theory from one review studyTrusted Source is that grounding affects the living matrix, which is the central connector between living cells.

Electrical conductivity exists within the matrix that functions as an immune system defense, similar to antioxidants. They believe that through grounding, the natural defenses of the body can be restored. Further research expands on this idea.

In a small studyTrusted Source on grounding and heart health, 10 healthy participants were grounded using patches on the palms of their hands and soles of their feet.

Blood measurements were taken before and after grounding to determine any changes in red blood cell fluidity, which plays a role in heart health. The results indicated significantly less red blood cell clumping after grounding, which suggests benefits for cardiovascular health.

Another slightly larger studyTrusted Source examined the role of grounding on post-exercise muscle damage. Researchers used both grounding patches and mats and measured creatine kinase, white blood cell count, and pain levels before and after grounding.

Blood work indicated that grounding reduced muscle damage and pain in participants. This suggests that grounding may influence healing abilities.

This research is supported by a recent studyTrusted Source on grounding for pain reduction and mood improvement. Sixteen massage therapists alternated between periods of grounding and no grounding.

Before grounding therapy, physical and emotional stress and pain were common side effects of their physically demanding jobs. After the earthing therapy, pain, stress, depression, and fatigue were all reduced among participants.

Most of the studies on grounding are small and rely somewhat on subjective measures, such as self-reported feelings, mood, or even self-administered treatment.

Some studies also rely on blood markers, such as those that detect inflammation, but the size and shortage of these studies suggests that more research is needed.

Types of grounding or earthing

There are many types of grounding. All of them focus on reconnecting yourself to the earth. This can be done through either direct or indirect contact with the earth.

Walking barefoot

Have you ever been outside on a warm summer day and felt the urge to run barefoot in the grass? One of the easiest ways to ground yourself to the earth is to walk barefoot.

Whether this is on grass, sand, or even mud, allowing your skin to touch the natural ground can provide you with grounding energy.

Lying on the ground

You can increase your skin-to-earth contact by lying on the ground. You can do it in the grass by the park or on the sand at the beach.

If you’re going to ground yourself in this way, be sure to take the proper precautions and never lie somewhere you could be injured.

Submersing in water

According to advocates for grounding, water may be used to ground in the same way the physical earth is used for grounding.

They suggest simply wading in a clear lake or swimming in the ocean as a way to ground yourself. As always, be sure to stay safe when swimming, especially in murky or deep waters.

Using grounding equipment

When going outside to ground yourself isn’t an option, there are alternativesTrusted Source. One method of earthing involves connecting a metal rod to the ground outside and then connecting the rod to your body through a wire.

If you’re not comfortable using a metal rod to ground yourself, there’s other grounding equipment available. This equipment is an effective way to incorporate earthing therapy into your daily life and includes:

grounding mats

grounding sheets or blankets

grounding socks

grounding bands and patches

You can find grounding mats, sheets, blankets, socks, and bands online.

The theme of this year’s world environment day is “Reconnecting you to nature”. What better way to reconnect to nature than to be in the middle of Salisbury Plain, which is the largest remaining area of calcareous grassland in north-west Europe, listening to the full-throated song of sky larks.

A large proportion of Salisbury Plain supports upright brome (Bromus erectus) species-rich grassland, within which a continuous floristic variation is seen. There is an abundance of red fescue (Festuca rubra), crested hair-grass (Koeleria macrantha), salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor), lady's bedstraw (Galium verum), rough hawkbit (Leontodon hispidus), common rock-rose (Helianthemum nummularium) and dropwort (Filipendula vulgaris).

In this shot you can see the wonderful grasses, the pink Sanfoin, the yellow buttercups and a hawthorn, all of which are also to be found in abundance in this fantastic place.

And of course, a sky lark! We must have seen and heard about a hundred of these melodious birds.

Returned from a week of road-tripping, camping, and nature obsession in southeastern Oregon. As is usual with me, the four walls and a ceiling upon return are alienating.

But I feel refreshed. I clicked the camera a lot. Spent a lot of time looking through binoculars. Took daily 6am, roll-out-of-the-tent nature walks. Dodged a good amount of various forms of precipitation. Grew a beard. And shared a week's worth of good times with my love.

Alex and I have made each other's acquaintance, but have never had the opportunity to really get to know each other. To my delight, we ran into each other at the Keystone Gala and were able to spend some time together.

In addition to being a real beauty, Alex exudes a cerebral calm that I admire and find very generous. In our brief time together, I learned a bit more about her interests, and we plan to meet for dinner in the fall. I can't wait! :-)

The Port of Miami, styled as "PortMiami" but formally the Dante B. Fascell Port of Miami, is a major seaport located in Biscayne Bay at the mouth of the Miami River in Miami, Florida. It is the largest passenger port in the world, and one of the largest cargo ports in the United States. It is connected to Downtown Miami by Port Boulevard—a causeway over the Intracoastal Waterway—and to the neighboring Watson Island via the PortMiami Tunnel.

The port is located on Dodge Island, which is the combination of three historic islands (Dodge, Lummus, and Sam's Islands) that have since been combined into one. It is named in honor of 19 terms Florida Congressman Dante Fascell.

As of 2018, PortMiami accounts for approximately 334,500 jobs and has an annual economic impact of $43 billion to the state of Florida.

In the early 1900s, Government Cut was dredged along with a new channel to what now is known as Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami. This new access to the mainland created the Main Channel which greatly improved the shipping access to the new port. From these original dredging spoils which were disposed of on the south side of the new Main Channel, new islands were inadvertently created which later became Dodge, Lummus, and Sam's Island along with several other smaller islands.

PortMiami's improved shipping access and growth of the South Florida community led to an expansion of the port. On April 5, 1960, Resolution No. 4830, "Joint Resolution Providing for Construction of Modern Seaport Facilities at Dodge Island Site" was approved by the Dade County Board of Commissioners. On April 6, 1960, the City of Miami approved City Resolution No. 31837 to construct the new port. The new port on Dodge Island required expansion of the island by joining it together with the surrounding islands. After the seawalls, administrative buildings, and a vehicle and railroad bridge were completed, Port of Miami operations were moved to the new Dodge Island port. Additional fill material enlarged the connected Lummus and Sam's islands as well as the North, South and NOAO slips, creating a completely man made island for PortMiami.

In 1993, the first dredge of PortMiami occurred, deepening it to 42 feet. In 2006, a $40 million project to expand the South Harbor finished. In 2011, a project to reconnect PortMiami to the mainland via railroad began. In 2013, a dredging project began to deepen the harbors around PortMiami from 44 to 52 feet. In April 2019, the Miami-Dade Tourism and Ports Committee approved a deal for Royal Caribbean Cruises to build a new office and parking garage on Dodge Island.

PortMiami is an important contributor to the local south Florida and state economies. As a world-class port, PortMiami is among an elite group of ports in the world that cater to both cruise ships and containerized cargo.

PortMiami boasts the title "cruise capital of the world", and is the busiest cruise/passenger port in the world. It accommodates the operations of major cruise lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney, and MSC, among others. Over 5.5 million cruise passengers pass through the port each year (FY2018/2019).

The largest cruise ship in the world by gross tonnage, the Symphony of the Seas, is currently homeported at PortMiami. As of October 2019, the following cruise ships are homeported at PortMiami: Carnival Conquest, Carnival Horizon, Carnival Sensation, Carnival Victory, Empress of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Sky, MSC Armonia, and MSC Seaside.

As of October 2019, there are currently seven actively operating passenger cruise terminals at PortMiami: A, C, D, E, F, G, and J. One facility that is purpose-built for a specific company is currently in use, with four more of these types of facilities in their planning or construction stages.

We are back from vacation and enjoying a little time in the greenhouse. What is your muse to reconnect to home, following time away? I would love to hear.

Metcalfe Street • Ottawa

In a world where everything moves so fast and you don't have enough time for yourself, do you sometimes find it hard to stay in touch with your feelings and ideas? When it happens, what do you do to reconnect with your inner self?

I spied this phone off the hook this evening. I’ve not really consciously noticed this payphone before, but the receiver lying loose somehow did grab my attention - along with the sign above the phone urging/encouraging one to “reconnect”.

It also felt a bit Matrix-y, which led to the processing.

The Kelpies are 30-metre-high horse-head sculptures depicting kelpies (shape-shifting water spirits), standing next to a new extension to the Forth and Clyde Canal, and near River Carron, in The Helix, a new parkland project built to connect 16 communities in the Falkirk Council Area, Scotland. The sculptures were designed by sculptor Andy Scott and were completed in October 2013. The sculptures form a gateway at the eastern entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal, and the new canal extension built as part of The Helix land transformation project. The Kelpies are a monument to horse powered heritage across Scotland.

The sculptures were opened to the public in October 2013. As part of the project, they will have their own visitor centre, and sit beside a newly developed canal turning pool and extension. This canal extension reconnects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the River Forth, and improves navigation between the East and West of Scotland.
