We celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied and multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

Orange Lake Overlook Restoration Effort Receives Support from Duke Energy

By Lianne D’Arcy, ACT’s Outreach Coordinator

In the shade of sabal palms, next to Orange Lake Overlook’s (OLO) old citrus packing shed, Alachua Conservation Trust was presented with a $5,000 check from Live Oak Level Corporate Sponsor, Duke Energy. The grant funds will help install new kiosks, benches, trails, and signage at the former orange grove. And starting later this year, the property is expected to partially open to the public.

Representing Duke Energy was Dorothy Pernu, the organization’s community relations manager. Early Tuesday morning, with OLO’s prehistoric lake stretching out behind her, Ms. Pernu presented ACT with a check from Duke Energy in support of Orange Lake Overlook..

“Duke Energy is proud to work with community organizations to responsibly manage and restore our natural resources in Florida and protect our historical locations like the Orange Lake Overlook,” Pernu said. “We continuously look for sustainable ways to support such efforts as part of our pledge to be good environmental stewards.”

The magic of Orange Lake Overlook is well known in the McIntosh community. Artists and writers have been using the historic landscape as a muse for years, and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the property was home to the Ollie Huff Citrus Shop and packing house.

But the Overlook’s known history really begins with the Timucua Indians, where the village of Potano was established in the 16th century before the area’s agricultural boom. Rich with history, the 71 acres of Orange Lake Overlook is regarded as a glimpse into “Old Florida.”

Frequented by bald eagles, belted kingfishers and sandhill cranes, the property also serves as a critical wildlife corridor for much of Florida’s endangered species. And because OLO is a source of food, rest and breeding for flocks, the area is humming with activity during migration months.

“We are honored to work with local community partners and businesses such as Duke Energy to protect special places like Orange Lake Overlook,” said ACT executive director Tom Kay. “This grant will allow us to enter the next phase of our efforts to preserve and restore the overlook, while providing recreational opportunities for the public that showcase breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.”

Orange Lake Overlook was officially protected as conservation land in the fall of 2019, and thanks to the generosity of Duke Energy, ACT can now work towards bettering the picturesque landscape for all to enjoy.

In return for their commitment to the Clean Cities programs, stakeholders will receive a variety of benefits, free of charge. Specific advantages to being a Clean Cities stakeholder include assistance in pursuing exclusive grants, publicity, networking opportunities and access to relevant information on alternative fuel market development and other issues.

“This is a great opportunity for Connecticut area businesses and organizations to expand our influence. We (the coalitions) offer interested parties the opportunity to speak with one voice on issues of clean air, the environment, independence from foreign energy and adoption of new technology in the mass transit and business transportation sectors,” said Norwich Clean Cities Coalition Coordinator, Pete Polubiatko. “All interested parties are welcome to attend the Connecticut Clean Cities Expo and find out more about our collective organizations,” he added.

Besides discussion of stakeholder benefits, expo attendees will also be treated to a variety of exhibits and a keynote address by Congressman John Larson of Connecticut’s 1st Congressional District. Sponsored by all four of the Connecticut Clean Cities organizations, (Southwestern Connecticut, Greater New Haven, Norwich and Capitol [covering the greater Hartford area]), the Expo’s panel of alternative fuel experts will discuss achievements and accomplishments of the Connecticut Clean Cities Future Fuels Project, (CTCCFF), a $29 million program, funded through a public private partnership; a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, funded by the Department of Energy and non-public funds provided by members of the project team.

A great turnout by the Parish of St Marks to Celebrate the Mass and to Congratulate Mary Kelly on receiving the Benemerenti Medal the highest honour that you can receive from the Catholic Church, for Mary's great Voluntary work in the Church of the Incarnation, St Ann's National School Fettercairn, and St Marks Parish.

Fr Bill in his Speech about Mary said

So friends, many of you were properly wondering why I didn’t give a Homily today, on this the first Sunday of Advent! Well there is a very good reason.

About three months ago I sent a letter to Rome, specifically the Holy See the Vatican. The letter was a five page essay on a certain someone here in Fettercairn. I had to do this, because, not only was she going through one of the toughest years of her life, but with all that, she continued to carry out numerous amounts of charitable works for the area, with sale of works, cake sales, you name it and all her Church duties, and has done so for 50 years!

In this letter to Rome I explained to the Secretariat of State (who works in an office beside Pope Francis), that this lady has been involved with the Church based Charities for the past 50 years, such as constantly raising funds for Vincent de Paul, with cake sales, raffles to beat the band! And I know you all know who it is I am talking about: Mary Kelly.

Your work in the school is second to none, in helping feed the children of the area, preparing them for holy communion, and have been and continue to be a source of stability and care for every single child that goes through the doors of St Anne’s School.

Your work here in this Church, cleaning, opening and closing the Church, in the darkest of nights, to the earliest of mornings, no matter the weather. Coming home from holidays just to help with funerals. To say you are dedicated is an understatement. You have been a source of comfort to 1000s of grieving families in Fettercairn, even though you where grieving yourself.

Shows just what strength you have, and it is a strength you get form your family and your faith in the Lord. Both of which are unshakable. That you have proved again and again. And not only in your role in the school, but here in our parish community, I don’t think it’s a stretch of title to say you have been and continue to be a ‘spiritual mother’ for us all in your exemplary role in our community.

Today is the First Sunday of Advent, a time when we focus on Hope, the first candle represent Hope, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ into this world. And it is people like you Mary who give others Hope. And that is why the Vatican, through the Archbishop of Dublin was more than happy to award you with the Church’s highest award it can bestow on any lay man or woman; the Benermenti Medal.

Today it is my singular honour and privilege as Parish Priest, and as your friend, on behalf of our Grouping of Parishes of Springfield, Brookfield and Jobstown: to present you Mary Kelly with the the Benereminti Medal.

No before you start to give out to me Mary, your daughter, Karen was just a ever bit involved in this as I was, and helped me with info for the letter to Rome. And I want to thank her, for organising the school side of things, and with Karen I want to thank Nicole and the children form St Annes for providing us with beautiful music and hymns for today, on this important day of reignition for all your work. And I want to also thank Margaret Leonard and Marian Kavanagh for their work behind the scenes who have very generously provided some refreshments in the Fellowship Space afterwards. So thank you all dearly.

Mary believe it or not, your name will now go on a list that will be forever enshrined in the Church, a list of people who have receive this award from the Pope in Ireland. It’s a medal that was first given to members of the Swiss Guards in the 1700s, for gallantry in their defence of the Vatican, but has since become an award by the Pope to members of the laity for service to the Catholic Church.

Mary there are few people more deserving of this award and reignition of all your work, dedication, commitment, faith and above all love for not just the community here in Fettercairn but love that has impacted so many families over the past 50 years. Absolutely extraordinary model of service and care you have shown everyone. You give without any though of reward, and today I want to change that.

And I know that I am not the only one who can say this, both as a Priest and as an ordinary bloke, but my life is far richer for knowing you.

Thanks again Mary, from all of us! And may God continue to bless us all through your love and service.
