I took this snap many years ago using a tiny, inexpensive pocket camera and have posted it before but thought it was too bright and cheerful to be forgotten.
This is another photo from Pixabay. For some reason, it reminded me of the movie "On Golden Pond." I have made a number of adjustments to the original image in Snapseed and Picasa, including adjusting the contrast, color balance, cropping, and adding a matte.

Edmund Spenser is the man believed to have crafted the phrase “without reason or a rhyme”. He was promised payment from Queen Elizabeth I of England of a hundred pounds, a so called, “reason for the rhyme”. Her treasurer, however, considered the sum too much. When seasons passed and Edmund did not receive payment he sent her this quatrain.
“I was promis’d on a time,
To have a reason for my rhyme:
But from that time unto this season,
I had neither rhyme or reason.”
Queen Elizabeth I immediately ordered her treasurer to send Edmund Spenser his due sum....6/12

I had a hard time with getting the subject into focus today for various reasons. Any tips on using a big lens and shooting moving targets would be appreciated.

Only a handful of these large vultures were seen on the tour. This one was lived up to its name and was sat in a palm-nut tree as we passed by in a boat on the River Gambia near Georgetown.
Thanks for taking the time to view and comment on my photographs – it is greatly appreciated and encouraging!

One of my favorite birds and the reason I bought my Canon 600 f/4 prime lens - I found this drake hooded merganser at Lake Artemesia today with another drake and two hens. Little did he know that I had finally calibrated my Canon 2x tele-converter on my 7D2 and 600 using my lens align system and was going to test it out on some unsuspecting birds. So, Mr. Hoodie became my first test subject to see if I could focus with an astonishing 1920mm effective (7D2 body, 2.0 extender, and 600mm lens is 1.6 X 2.0 X 600 = 1920) and actually get a nice photo out of it. Why do this at all? Well, most of the hooded mergansers I've met aren't really a sociable lot. They seem uncomfortable around humans and they like to stay far far away towards the middle of the lake if they can. But the 2X introduces another problem and it's a huge consideration. Can I keep the camera and lens stable enough so that I didn't get a blurry photography. The longer the effective the more of a problem this is and this is as long as I can get and still use autofocus on my 7D2 body. I was shooting this camera combination on a tripod with a Wimberly head.
Well, you be the judge! How do you think it all worked out? Did I nail it or get a blurry photo? Thank you for looking and giving me feedback my friends!

This location was one of the main reasons that I went to New Zealand this time. I have wanted to shoot here for a long time and I loved being here. You may recognise the seastacks from the famous image taken inside one of the caves as you open Windows 10.
Its location is very remote being near Puponga right at the very top of the south Island. There is only one way in and out and that's through what they call the Takaka Hill - well its certainly not a hill and I had to drive it through rain and fog and I have to say it was rather sketchy and I was very glad that it finally came to an end. When you google it, it tells you that its very dangerous and I can now see why.
To get to this beach its about a 20 minute walk from the carpark through a gorgeous farm scattered with sheep and 4 steeples that you have to cross over.
Once I got to the beach the view took my breath away. All the effort to get here was worth it. There are caves, sea stacks called the Archway Islands and there are even seals swimming and sunbaking! what a location. I also timed it perfectly with the tide to get great reflections too.

I've been absent from Flickr for a while now and as you can imagine the reason for this was another trip. This time we went to Norway. From the very south of the country to the Lofoten, wich was the aim of our travel.
I'm starting with a relatively dark image from the highlands south east from Lysefjord. Athmosphere and weather on this picture is kind of charakteristic for the first week, we hardly could get out of the car to take a picture without getting wet. The temperatures ranged from 3 degrees to a maximum of 11. Not a really nice wellcome.
There goes my heart beating
Cause you are the reason
I'm losing my sleep
Please come back now
There goes my mind racing
And you are the reason
That I'm still breathing
I'm hopeless now
I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
Oh, ‘cause I need you to see
That you are the reason
There goes my hands shaking
Cause you are the reason
My heart keeps bleeding
And I need you now
If I could turn back the clock
I'd make sure the light defeated the dark
I'd spend every hour, of every day
Keeping you safe
I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
Oh, ‘cause I need you to see
That you are the reason
You are the reason
Yeah, yeah...
I'd climb every mountain
And swim every ocean
Just to be with you
And fix what I've broken
Oh, ‘cause I need you to see
That you are the reason..."

I am occasionally asked why I like hill walking so much. After all, as people point out to me, you can get very cold, very wet, very tired and very lost. And there is always a degree of risk involved.
All this is true.
I have been very cold, very wet, very tired and very lost.
But I still love it.
I love the quiet satisfaction of getting from A to B with nothing more than a map and compass.
I love the fresh air.
I love the quietness.
I love seeing the wildlife.
I love the hunger that a day on the hills brings, and the fact that the food tastes so much better.
I love the thirst that a long walk brings and there’s nothing better than to sit in a nice warm pub, with a pint of good beer and let the ache of tiredness waft over me.
But most of all, I love it because I get to see scenery like this.

Garden roses are predominantly hybrid roses that are grown as ornamental plants in private or public gardens. They are one of the most popular and widely cultivated groups of flowering plants, especially in temperate climates. An enormous number of garden cultivars have been produced, especially over the last two centuries, though roses have been known in the garden for millennia beforehand. While most garden roses are grown for their flowers, often in dedicated rose gardens, some are also valued for other reasons, such as having ornamental fruit, providing ground cover, or for hedging. Roses are one of the most popular garden shrubs in the world with both indoor and outdoor appeal. They possess a number of general features that cause growers and gardeners to choose roses for their gardens. This includes the wide range of colours they are available in; the generally large size of flower, larger than most flowers in temperate regions; the variety of size and shape; the wide variety of species and cultivars that freely hybridize.

The reasons for the white tiger being almost extinct in the wild is because it lacks the natural camouflage of normally colored tigers, and most of those born are killed by predators as they are young and vulnerable, and more so because they stand out. Those that do survive and make it to adulthood, have a hard time hunting for the same reason - lack of camouflage. Sadly, they are hunted down for their beautiful fur and organs.
You see, I started this project for reasons unlike what most of you have described: better knowledge of your camera, a way to hone your skills, etc., etc. Me? I really did not see any point in having three hundred and sixty five photographs of myself. But, here’s how it happened:
Last summer I drove from my life in California back to my childhood home in Ohio. The decision to move home was based on necessity, not want. Over the course of the four-day cross-country drive, WITH MY MOTHER, I realized I was going to need one hell of an outlet if I was going to survive this transition year. During this drive across country, I also realized that not only would I need an outlet, a safe-haven, a secret-hide-out from my everyday life back home, I realized I would need some friends. Not one of my friends from high school or growing up was still around town. The whole drive I thought about the 365 projects I’d seen on Flickr, and by the time I got half way home, I’d decided that’s what I needed to do. I even convinced my mom on the drive that I needed a DSLR… you know… as an investment? Uh-huh. And a 365 was born on the night of August 16, 2008… the day my cross-continental drive came to an end and I was officially home. One year ago.
What I didn’t realize was just how much of an outlet this would be. I like to think of it as the one room in my house where no one can find me. What else I didn’t realize was… you people would become more than online-acquaintances. You would become friends, people I actually desire to meet.
It’s funny, this project, and what it does to you that you don’t expect. I’ve learned a lot about myself and my life over this past year (not just through the 365, lets not be dramatic), and I think maybe I’ve even learned a little photography along the way.
Thanks to everyone who has stopped by at one point or another over the past year.
Love,
Erin

Beauty is a kind of genius and more than genius
Without any explain any reasons
Beauty is just beauty nothing else
I bow down to pray
I try to make the worst seem better
Lord, show me the way
To cut through all his worn out leather
I've got a hundred million reasons to walk away
But baby, I just need one good one to stay...

“Childhood is the sleep of reason.”
(Jean-Jacques Rousseau - French philosopher, 1712-1778)
It was too hot that day in Varanasi (Benaras) and I left the ghats along the Ganges where there was no air.
As I was walking into a narrow street of Kashi, the oldest part of the city, I saw some amazing tiles on a wall with images of several Gods that I started to take in pictures.
Suddenly I heard a voice calling me from the upper levels of the building:
“Hey uncle, take my picture!”
And this young boy was waving at me, I took several shots and he started to bend over the window trying to give me the best smile.
His mother came in time shouting that if he was jumping I would have a better picture.
We all burst laughing, it was a happy moment and it is now a sweet memory captured with my camera.

i'm getting really sick of these plants and flowers and such, sorry for the lack of variety but i expect some wonderful pictures tonight because i'm going to a sleepover. (:
if anyone has any suggestions on things i could do better in my shots, please don't be hasty and just tell me. i'm in complete need of growth.
by the way, hello. (: there was almost a tornado on tuesday. i was crying really hard because the funnel was right above the track we were running on for our meet and my mom was there but i lost her, only to find after a good 30 minutes of crying very hard that she went home before anything even happened.
whatta week. :D

Nick Cave is a phenomenal artist for several reasons. One thing that I loved about this exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago is that there were audio pieces explaining some of the works. The main work the couple are viewing is called Speak Louder but the work above it is one of a few in his Tondo series. When Nick Cave started making Soundsuits, it was right after he heard about the police brutality and the Rodney King beatings. I posted a shot of his Soundsuits here:
www.flickr.com/photos/kirstiecat/52075785831/in/dateposted/
When he speaks about Tondo, he speaks about the effects of inner city violence on children. This is something that is a dear issue to me as I work with kids with disabilities in the public schools in Chicago. At one school I work at, kids come all over the city and 97% must be drawn from the highest poverty areas of the city according to the last census. So, when a parent is concerned because of a child's lack of attention or behavior and a nurse asks, "How much sleep does your child get each night?" and the parent replies "None because there are constantly gunshots and police sirens going off," you know something needs to change in this world.
As many of you know, I believe in proactive means to building better communities. As we continue to put more budgets into funding police, we actually have more crime because less is going into quality education, libraries, mental health facilities, preventing food deserts, equitable employment and low income housing. As our policing has increased, it means that there is also less of a viable public transportation system as well, at the same time that many families earning lower incomes cannot afford these astronomical gas prices and we all need to take an active role when it comes to climate change.
In my 21 years of working with children at Chicago Public Schools, I've worked at a few different schools. In 2003, I had the great honor of working with kids in the Cabrini Green neighborhood before re gentrification and racism (profit over people time and time again) unfortunately forced many people out. I've worked on the West side and lately on the North side. I love children all over the city. When I bike to the far South side to see art, some ask me if it's safe. Wherever children go, we should be willing to go. And, if we are not wiling to go there, we need to think about making it safer there. Chicago is a microcasm of the whole world in that respect. We have the ability to make a world where everyone has a basic level of human rights and a higher quality of life. We don't need little boys getting to go to space again. We don't need billionaires who have 10 homes. We need sustainability.
In all my years at Chicago Public Schools and in the hundreds upon thousands of children I've met (and hopeful helped), not one of them has ever told me he/she/they want to rob or kill people for a living. However, there was an eight year old girl who told a Speech Therapist I worked with that she wanted to be a cop "because they get away with murder." We need to be better.
I am an active voter and donate money to charity and some politicians. I wish I had more power. I wish I could also create something as beautiful as Nick Cave does when he falls into despair. Some people ask me what protesting does. Others ask me what making art does. Still, others ask me what voting does. I'll tell you I don't have all the answers (or any some days) but I can tell you this much, if we were ALL trying to make the world a better place. If we were all making decisions based on trying to be more kind, just, and human, this world would in fact change.
So, if you're kind, Speak Louder. If you're a fan of human rights, Speak Louder. If you want children of all races, religions, and socioeconomic backgrounds to grow up in a better world, Speak Louder. If you want Environmental Justice, speak louder. If you want immigration rights and body autonomy, speak louder. If you want those in the LGBTQ+ community to have the same quality of life as those who are cis gendered and/or heterosexual, speak louder. If you want an end to the For Profit Prison Industrial Complex, speak louder.
Speak Louder.

I'm still reminiscing about the hike up Silver Star Mountain earlier this year.
Image made with my Hasselblad 500 C/M. It's a similar comp of a previous photo, but from a bit farther away.
Coal was the reason for the existence of the East Broad Top Railroad. The 33-mile, narrow gauge line was built to transport coal from the mines in hills of West Central Pennsylvania to the standard gauge lines of the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad, which interchanged with the EBT in Mt. Union. Of course, coal also fueled the EBT's locomotives, making the entire enterprise possible. In this image, the crew of EBT Locomotive #16 heads to the coal tipple at the south end of the yards in Rockhill Furnace, to fuel their locomotive for the upcoming day's operations.
This image was captured during an April, 2023 photo shoot at the East Broad Top Railroad, which featured the newly-restored Mikado #16. A close examination of the image reveals that the track immediately adjacent to the coal tipple had been removed as part of a project to rebuild the entire structure. Once the EBT Foundation completes this restoration work, the coal tipple should once again be fully operational.
Let us not forget the reason for the season
To do so would be tantamount to treason
Let’s sing our praises for all we’re worth
Let’s gleefully celebrate Jesus’ birth!
Merry Christmas to all!

on February 7, 2021, blizzard Darcy rages across Western Europe, a strong wind accompanied by drifting snow. The last heavy snowstorm in Amsterdam dates from 1985. In the evening the storm had died down. Wind, cold, dark? It's minus eight degrees celcius. All reasons to go outside. Scarf on, walking shoes on and into the city centre. Do you see those lights, do you see the smoke coming out of the chimney and do you hear the fire crackling? The snow reflects the light in the evening, giving you a beautiful view. I enjoy the sound of crunching snow under my shoes and the beautiful view of the Amsterdam canal houses. Walking in winter is not only a guarantee for red cheeks and a breath of fresh air, but is also good for body and soul. There is something very beautiful about Amsterdam in winter. The Jordaan is covered with thick snow as above on the Keizersgracht. There is a tranquil beauty of snow and cold. A white blanket does indeed make Amsterdam slightly different from those other 360 days of the year: different views, different sounds, different light. A winter party sprinkled with white confetti. And it is quite simply a welcome break in the covid-19 lockdown. A period when the days start to look more and more alike and string together in a uniform slurry, with only the longing for the future as a ray of light in the darkness of the curfew. The snow remains at this temperature. More than 10 centimeters of snow has fallen. This is a welcome change. The snow also provides a lot of fun for children here in the Amsterdam Jordaan . Snowball fight, making snowmen or sledding. All fun activities that children do in this beautiful snowy world. Anyone who thinks away for a moment will imagine themselves in the world of Hendrick Avercamp today. It will continue to snow for the next few days. Expect more than 17 cm of snow in Amsterdam.
When an Amsterdammer sees the Westertoren, he or she thinks of Theo Thijssen. He felt an intense bond with the capital, where he was born and died. He grew up in the Jordaan, in the shadow of the Westertoren. Theo Thijssen was also a trade unionist and social democratic politician. The book 'Kees de Jongen' is about a boy growing up in Amsterdam at the end of the 19th century. It takes place in the Jordaan. Main character Kees Bakels lives near the Westertoren. His father owns a shoe shop and workshop. Kees lives in his fantasies. Kees' musings are still recognizable to many today. Thijssen also talked about the flu epidemic in the winter of 1889-1890 and now 131 years later we talk about our covid-19 epidemic. Little has changed in that regard. Photo taken in the evening at the Keizersgracht and Leliegracht intersection in the Amsterdam-Jordaan with the Westertoren in the background.
op 7 februari 2021 raast sneeuwstorm Darcy over West- Europa deze hard wind ging gepaard met stuifsneeuw. De laatste zware sneeuwstorm in Amsterdam dateert van 1985. In de avond was de storm gaan liggen. Wind, kou, donker?
I like GWGUs for some reason. It was fun being able to increase contrast a lot too; the bird is just that pale!
56051 departs Holyhead with 56049 on the rear at the start of the return leg of the 3S71 2115 Coleham to Coleham RHTT.
The outbound working was running over an hour late and was held at Bangor for what seemed like a lifetime. I had thoughts of the train reversing there and heading back to Shrewsbury without making it to Holyhead. As i was rehearsing my curses the train dropped down the hill and pulled into the sidings parking up by the box. This was most welcome and gave me a chance to get a full range of shots including some drone pics. I believe the usual practise is for the set to run into platform 3.
I had made the marathon hike to phot the semaphores which no doubt will be coming down soon. Having some classic traction amongst them was the icing on the cake not to mention the dappled sunlight which was the Cherry on the Icing of the cake.
The last time i was at Holyhead was on the 26th August 1979 and i departed behind 47453 on the 0055 Holyhead to Euston. The last Class 40 i departed Holyhead on was the day before, it was 40120 1805 Holyhead to Euston as far as Crewe. A lifetime ago now.

For some odd reason, even Cherie our youngest cat stopped to look in the same direction that Joey was staring. I saw nothing as the line of sight to Coco's grave was blocked by garage pillars and also by my car.
Cherie had been behavingly very strangely the night before, just half an hour after Coco passed on. She was meowing at me at the dinner table and wanted to jump up on my lap. Cherie had never done this and I wondered if she had seen Coco's spirit. I do believe that animals have the gift of seeing spirits but they're unable to tell humans what they see.
Joey is in the background, looking in the same direction as Cherie.
For some reason 66424 just arrived in the bay of platforms 7 and 8 at Crewe. The driver jumped out and got in the other cab, waited for a few minutes before getting the road to leave.
Its these little workings that keep us meere uninformed mortals fascinated and intrigued with the railway network. I can imagine several conversations around Crewe's enthusiast community that spent a pleasant hour or so speculating the purpose of that move.
My speculation however, was brief and i quickly focused camera and mind on capturing the moment. The unplanned event had my creative juices flowing and having several conventional pictures in the bag i was on the hunt for that special opportunity.
The Crewe station anti suicide squad had recently set me free having convinced themselves that i was not a danger to myself nor society and had no intention of putting one toe beyond the yellow line thus endangering the lives of hundreds of other passengers.
I was behaving impeccably until they disappeared and then behaving like a crazy man i dropped to one knee to get a different angle my knee grazing the yellow line. Phew ! i got away with it.
The approaching Pendo had me fiddling with my camera settings to induce some intentional in camera movement whilst still keeping the Class 66 as sharp as i could. Referring to the manual step 1 said place camera on tripod......Bollocks ! tripod was in the car. Manual discarded i decided to wing it as carriage after carriage glided by.
Bingpot...this is pretty much what i had hoped for and no railway enthusiasts were harmed during the recording of this picture.
