Life is so full and wonderful.. that when the wind roll me I will be reason
for the smile of a child playing catch me ..
La vida es tan plena y maravillosa..que cuando el viento me haga rodar..sere motivo de la sonrisa de un ni#o que juega a capturarme..

For some reason or other, this image that I posted today as an insert could not be accessed by most of those who tried. Obviously, I got the allotment of accesses because even as of five minutes or go, it worked. It is one of my favorite images of an adult White-crowned sparrow in breeding plumage. I found him at the end of a fir tree bough, and he was so striking that I couldn't miss him. He was also uncharacteristically cooperative, staying on his perch for at least five minutes. In human terms, five minutes in one spot is equivalent to 12 hours! (Five minutes for a chickadee is an entire day in human terms or vice-versa. It's late, and I'm a little tahrd.
This is a relatively important bird photographically. Well, for me in particular. For quite a number of years, I had fallen into the bad habit of (1) centering my subject, (2) getting closeups whenever possible, and (3) believing that I could compose better by getting any shot possible, and cropping it later. This shot changed most of my bird images afterward.
I did start taking as many shots as possible just to be sure I got him. When it seemed, he was going to give me whatever time I needed, I started composition in the viewfinder. That's what I do to this very day. I don't always succeed, but when I do, if no one else, I'm usually pleased with the outcome.
In composing in that way, I also had a more "distant" view of the bird. With this sparrow, instead of being five or ten feet from him, the tree branch and background became key to the outcome. As I mentioned to Tom this morning regarding his image of a Long-billed Curlew (flic.kr/p/2kBgx17), I found his composition much more pleasing than at least two-thirds of my images of the same bird. Plus the bird was sharper and the feathers beautiful even before viewing large. So, I think focus improves with distance: less noise, sharper, and the background again more important.
I've given more information about sparrows than I think you want, so if you want to know more about the White-crowned Sparrow, please see yesterday's and this morning's images. Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow, Song Sparrows!
For reasons I will never know, this doe stood calmly and watched me as I happily snapped photos (trying to follow the rules, to not look at her directly and to keep my back to her as much as possible. She watched for about 5 minutes before she joined her family, who had already left as soon as I came along.

I shot this early in Spring this year. I think the Oystercatcher was defending his nesting territory. The Eagle was defending himself and trying to eat a fish just caught. Both were not happy
Lebanon, Ohio
This image is part of a project to photograph the Historical Markers in Lebanon, OH. Check out the album for the series.
The downtown commercial district of Lebanon is on the National Register of Historic Sites as are a of couple specific buildings. There are about 30 sites with markers out front placed by the Rotary Club. My goal of the project is to include one image of each marked site in the album. It could be a full image or some detail. I'm also trying (to the best of my ability) to make a good, interesting photograph and not just a snap shot or just "documentation" of each site. That is one reason it is taking me so long. It has taken me much longer than planned to finish the project.

"The city building is Colonial Revival in style and was modeled after the chapel at Dennison University. It was dedicated in May of 1934. Two years earlier, the Opera House, built here 1878, burned down on Christmas morning. this is also where the county's first courthouse was constructed in 1805."
There are many reasons to go to the rural parts of Britain for a holiday, but beauty, peace and wonderful days out might be the most important.
I have far too many photos from our UK holiday in 2018, so I thought I would do what we all fear most of all, make a lovely collection of my holidaysnaps to show you.
But it was too many, so this is just a few glimpses to things we did in Lake District that I haven't alreaddy posted.
The main photo is from Eskdale. Eskdale is a glacial valley and civil parish in the western Lake District National Park, west of the Hardknott Pass. We are heading for the tiny village of Boot.
There are more photos in the first comment.

Have you ever in your Life Encountered a Scene that you just thought was unreal or felt Dream Like? ---- One of those scenes that if you talked to your friends about it they just wouldn't understand, A Scene you wish you only had a Picture of to show the Sheer Power and the Beauty off! ---- Well this is my Example of one of those Scenes! ---- At this Moment you could feel the positivity in the Day, the Power of the Waves crashing into the Rocks fueled the power inside of me, the Light was feeding my sense of Hope and Happiness for Life! ---- This is why i have named this image "The Reason"
BAL-05, with the CP 6241 and 6303 in their sharp Golden Beaver scheme leading, weave through some curves along the appropriately named Great River Road north of Guttenberg, IA on the west edge of the Mississippi River Valley. An old MILW line pole for some reason hangs on here, one of the few anywhere along this line to my knowledge. The ballast extra with it’s two set of GREX conveyor cars has been trying to weave through traffic southbound on the Marquette sub all day. Some minor signal issues at the siding at Eckards had delayed the train ahead (K50) and now this BAL-05 was running on restricting signals behind the slower freight most of the way to Dubuque it seemed. But that made for a nice chase for me! This sharp SD60 duo didn't last super long before one of them was replaced with a GP20ECo, unfortunately.
The CTC for this stretch around Eckards to Dubuque is relatively new. The CP has slowly been implementing CTC on the Marquette Sub from Sabula, IA to Bluff (La Crescent, MN), and has finally made it to Marquette with just a few "islands" of track warrant control "dark" territory left south of there. Given the increase in traffic on this line that is a key link in the CPKC’s Canada to Mexico route it certainly does seem warranted. Ballast trains are a common sight on the Marquette as they shuttle rock to expansion and heavy maintenance projects all throughout eastern Iowa from the pit at Waterloo, WI.
'Why must you shed such tender tears,
In the evening of your years?
No other love could stem the tide,
Of the loneliness I hide.
Open your heart and let me live,
All the promises I could give.
The sun and moon and all the stars,
They bow down to you,
Whenever you pass.
In a world of fading sadness,
An emerald ring, a photograph.
That look in your eyes, the brush of your cheek,
These are the moments in life that I seek.
No reason or rhyme, no presence of mind,
Just a dance to the music of time.'

(so much better in large size..)
I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know
I've found out a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you
I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
That's why I need you to hear
I've found out a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is You
I've found out a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you

There are many reasons why one might decide to become fleet of foot. However, I think a large crack in the Earth right behind you might be all the encouragement I needed.
You let me violate you, you let me desecrate you
You let me penetrate you, you let me complicate you
Help me I broke apart my insides, help me I've got no soul to sell
Help me the only thing that works for me, help me get away from myself
I wanna fuck you like an animal
I wanna feel you from the inside
I wanna fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God
You can have my isolation, you can have the hate that it brings
You can have my absence of faith, you can have my everything
Help me tear down my reason, help me it's your sex I can smell
Help me you make me perfect, help me become somebody else
I wanna fuck you like an animal
I wanna feel you from the inside
I wanna fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God
Through every forest, above the trees
Within my stomach, scraped off my knees
I drink the honey inside your hive
You are the reason I stay alive
----------
The Marmore Fall is located near the town of Terni (in the centre of Italy).
It is one of the tallest falls in Europe with the “controlled flow”: the whole difference of level is 165m, shared in three jumps (the first one is 83m).
The water of the fall is widely used for the production of electrical energy: for this reason the fall itself is not continuously working, so for the most of the time it is only a small river.
Only in scheduled days and hours the fall is being working at the maximum flow, originating in this way an impressive and magnificent sight.
Vernunft / Reason
[...]

Reason is a complicated instinct that is not yet fully developed. This would mean that instinctual actions are always meaningful and natural. A million years will pass away, and the instinct will be trained that we can no longer make mistakes - mistakes that are obviously an integral part of reason. But if something changes in the universe then we will die out because we have forgotten how to make mistakes - that is, to try different variants not planned by the rigid program ...

She's the reason!
For some reason, while parts of the country basks in an unseasonal heatwave, we often get several days of coastal fog in the far west of Cornwall. We could see the fog drifting up Zennor Valley and went to photograph it, but it drifted so far in that the cliffs look more like highlands and very little of the cove could be seen at all.
i've been posting a lot of similar photos lately; I think because lately I've been more interested in editing than taking pictures. It's a phase I'm going through that I'm sure will pass.
On another note, I look like a giant here. I blame it on the wide angle adaptor for the Lensbaby. You never know what kind of distortion you're going to have to deal with. I suppose that's part of the fun.
Happy Tuesday to all.
I haven’t uploaded any photos to Flickr for over eight months, but there was a good reason for it.
My wife and I decided to pull up our Colorado roots of nearly 28 years and head out of state to a new and unidentified location to call home. The process actually began on December 1, 2024, when I began dismantling my large N scale model railroad 25 years in the making. By March 2025, most of it was in a large heap on the now empty basement floor, with a few sections saved and given to a couple of friends. What followed was packing, selling or rehoming the rest of our stuff. Meanwhile, I found an topper for my wife’s old 1996 Dodge pickup, and after some makeshift weatherproofing, loaded our futon mattress into the 8-foot bed. It’s purpose yet to come.
During the fervor of packing, Katie’s horse Lilah was relocated to a boarding facility north of Denver, and soon after we loaded the empty horse trailer with more stuff from the garage and basement that we didn’t want to store with the moving company. It was also stored, along with Katie’s car, at the horse’s new location. After a garage sale, we filled an 18-yard dumpster that stayed in the driveway for a week—the old couch, kitchen chairs, layout pieces and anything else that needed throwing away—went bye-bye. We packed our vehicles with camping supplies and last minute things we didn’t get packed for the movers, now ready for the next phase of our journey. The house was empty and would shortly be put up for sale.
On April 9 we pulled out of the driveway for the last time, vehicles crammed with two humans, two Beagles and hopefully all the supplies we need to take us on the road trip to our new home. There was no looking back now..., except when I had to make sure Katie was still following me since her Dodge is a 5-speed manual equipped with a Cummins diesel and she needed a bit more time going through the gears! Northward ho!
We stayed our first night in a campground at Douglas, Wyoming. In the search for our new home, we planned on checking out properties in both the Cowboy State and Montana. The dogs loved curling up with us in the back of the Dodge, especially on nights like the one we had at Cottonwood Creek Canyon, where high winds and temperatures in the teens made the Little Buddy heater feel pretty good in the morning! During our entire adventure, we never stayed in a motel.
From the Big Horn Basin in Wyoming, we traveled into Montana. We were camped along the Yellowstone River at Columbus when our house in Arvada went under contract on April 20—we were now officially ‘homeless’!
After traveling around Big Sky Country, we gravitated to the Clark Fork Valley between Missoula and the Idaho border. Camping along the river amid beautiful mountains and forests was most enjoyable while checking out properties for sale. We swam (more like ice dipped early on), read, warmed by camp fires and did all the other stuff you do during downtime when camping. I photographed trains and Katie even went fishing!
Four months of living out of the back of our vehicles culminated in our purchase of Whitepine Ranch between Thompson Falls and Trout Creek. It’s a 19 acre ‘ranch’ with cozy cabin, large heated/insulated shop, classic barn built in 1955, hay barn, carport and two hay fields. It also has several corrals and a pasture that Lilah now enjoys. We love it!
Most of the boxes are unpacked and as we settle into a winter routine at the ranch, I thought it was about time to share a few photos again on Flickr. Hopefully you’ll indulge me in some images of our grand adventure over the next few months. The photo above is of one of our campsites located at Trout Creek, Montana, on May 16, 2025. Operating over former Montana Rail Link’s Fourth Subdivision, an eastbound BNSF coal train crosses Trout Creek where it empties into the Clark Fork as my wife Katie looks on.

Reasons
“Inside the eggshell of her mind,
she could live without being unkind.
We may wonder about her,
but there is nothing left to know.
Already home,
she had no reason to leave.
She had the impulse to fly.
She had no reason to live.
Tangled, her dress,
as she fell down the face
of the building like a tear.
Don’t you get tired
of asking your fear
what the sound was
that her bones made,
on yielding to the still ground.
She had a reason to dream.
She had the impulse to fly.
Already home.”
