I believe that this is a picture of an Ozark witch-hazel for following reasons: it flowers in late winter, the centers of the flowers appear to be very red, the petals are red towards the center of the flower, the young branches seem to grow in a zig-zag pattern, and the flowers grow close to each other like grapes. However, this was taken in the golden hour, so colours may well be off. Also: the petals, which for H. vernalis are often described as very thin, look rather similar to those seen in my other Hamamelis pictures , they are more likely to be red than yellow, and there are no leaves visible on this plant to make identifcation easier. Which means that we may well be dealing with another Hamamelis × intermedia variety. As usual, when the variation within a genus is less than that between its cultivars, it can be really difficult for an amateur to be certain.
We will just assume that I am right and I will just tell you a bit about the Ozark witch-hazel. It takes its common name from the Ozark Plateau in the US states of Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas, to which it is native. It often grows close to but does not interbreed with Hamamelis virginiana. The Ozark witch-hazel forms bushes on gravel and rocky stream banks at altitudes between 100 and 400 meters (320 - 1320 ft). It survives in areas with annual average minimum temperatures between -23° and -20° Celsius (-10 to -5° F). This hardiness and the fact that the species, as opposed to e.g. H. virginiana, has strongly scented flowers, make it ideal for cultivation. The variation in the colours of those cultivar's flowers (for example 'Carnea' (pink), 'Autumn embers' (copper-red), 'Red Imp' (red petals with orange tips), or 'Squib' (vivid yellow flowers)) takes us back to my initial point: It is very difficult to know which variety you are looking at. This may be 'Red Imp' or it may be something else entirely. In any case, they are always a lovely surprise to behold in the cold days of winter.

I shot this early in Spring this year. I think the Oystercatcher was defending his nesting territory. The Eagle was defending himself and trying to eat a fish just caught. Both were not happy
There are many reasons to go to the rural parts of Britain for a holiday, but beauty, peace and wonderful days out might be the most important.
I have far too many photos from our UK holiday in 2018, so I thought I would do what we all fear most of all, make a lovely collection of my holidaysnaps to show you.
But it was too many, so this is just a few glimpses to things we did in Lake District that I haven't alreaddy posted.
The main photo is from Eskdale. Eskdale is a glacial valley and civil parish in the western Lake District National Park, west of the Hardknott Pass. We are heading for the tiny village of Boot.
There are more photos in the first comment.

Have you ever in your Life Encountered a Scene that you just thought was unreal or felt Dream Like? ---- One of those scenes that if you talked to your friends about it they just wouldn't understand, A Scene you wish you only had a Picture of to show the Sheer Power and the Beauty off! ---- Well this is my Example of one of those Scenes! ---- At this Moment you could feel the positivity in the Day, the Power of the Waves crashing into the Rocks fueled the power inside of me, the Light was feeding my sense of Hope and Happiness for Life! ---- This is why i have named this image "The Reason"
BAL-05, with the CP 6241 and 6303 in their sharp Golden Beaver scheme leading, weave through some curves along the appropriately named Great River Road north of Guttenberg, IA on the west edge of the Mississippi River Valley. An old MILW line pole for some reason hangs on here, one of the few anywhere along this line to my knowledge. The ballast extra with it’s two set of GREX conveyor cars has been trying to weave through traffic southbound on the Marquette sub all day. Some minor signal issues at the siding at Eckards had delayed the train ahead (K50) and now this BAL-05 was running on restricting signals behind the slower freight most of the way to Dubuque it seemed. But that made for a nice chase for me! This sharp SD60 duo didn't last super long before one of them was replaced with a GP20ECo, unfortunately.
The CTC for this stretch around Eckards to Dubuque is relatively new. The CP has slowly been implementing CTC on the Marquette Sub from Sabula, IA to Bluff (La Crescent, MN), and has finally made it to Marquette with just a few "islands" of track warrant control "dark" territory left south of there. Given the increase in traffic on this line that is a key link in the CPKC’s Canada to Mexico route it certainly does seem warranted. Ballast trains are a common sight on the Marquette as they shuttle rock to expansion and heavy maintenance projects all throughout eastern Iowa from the pit at Waterloo, WI.
'Why must you shed such tender tears,
In the evening of your years?
No other love could stem the tide,
Of the loneliness I hide.
Open your heart and let me live,
All the promises I could give.
The sun and moon and all the stars,
They bow down to you,
Whenever you pass.
In a world of fading sadness,
An emerald ring, a photograph.
That look in your eyes, the brush of your cheek,
These are the moments in life that I seek.
No reason or rhyme, no presence of mind,
Just a dance to the music of time.'

Well, the other reason I got a little shiver as I looked down over Dunraven Bay in Wales was not just because Paul was standing next to me, but because Mr Bob Dylan had walked this same path.
In 1987, this area was used as a location for the filming of Hearts of Fire, a film widely criticized for the story line and acting.Of course I saw it at the movies. I don't remember too much apart from Dylan just being Dylan with his glorious 1980s look, big hair, eyeliner, puffy shirts and earings. I remember enjoying Molly's voice. I just listened to some of the sound track and realised I knew some of the words so I must have listened to it abit at the time.
Further below from where I took yesterdays upload, there is al small cove and seats where one of the scene's was filmed. I couldn't make it any further so Paul went down and took this photo for me!
Here it is. Just abit of fan-girling. Why not?
(so much better in large size..)
I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know
I've found out a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you
I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
That's why I need you to hear
I've found out a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is You
I've found out a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you
I couldn't think of a reason why I should post an image of just one...
Combining two images of the same "Downy woodpecker"
There are many reasons why one might decide to become fleet of foot. However, I think a large crack in the Earth right behind you might be all the encouragement I needed.
You let me violate you, you let me desecrate you
You let me penetrate you, you let me complicate you
Help me I broke apart my insides, help me I've got no soul to sell
Help me the only thing that works for me, help me get away from myself
I wanna fuck you like an animal
I wanna feel you from the inside
I wanna fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God
You can have my isolation, you can have the hate that it brings
You can have my absence of faith, you can have my everything
Help me tear down my reason, help me it's your sex I can smell
Help me you make me perfect, help me become somebody else
I wanna fuck you like an animal
I wanna feel you from the inside
I wanna fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God
Through every forest, above the trees
Within my stomach, scraped off my knees
I drink the honey inside your hive
You are the reason I stay alive
Vernunft / Reason

Reason is a complicated instinct that is not yet fully developed. This would mean that instinctual actions are always meaningful and natural. A million years will pass away, and the instinct will be trained that we can no longer make mistakes - mistakes that are obviously an integral part of reason. But if something changes in the universe then we will die out because we have forgotten how to make mistakes - that is, to try different variants not planned by the rigid program ...

For some reason, while parts of the country basks in an unseasonal heatwave, we often get several days of coastal fog in the far west of Cornwall. We could see the fog drifting up Zennor Valley and went to photograph it, but it drifted so far in that the cliffs look more like highlands and very little of the cove could be seen at all.
i've been posting a lot of similar photos lately; I think because lately I've been more interested in editing than taking pictures. It's a phase I'm going through that I'm sure will pass.
On another note, I look like a giant here. I blame it on the wide angle adaptor for the Lensbaby. You never know what kind of distortion you're going to have to deal with. I suppose that's part of the fun.
Happy Tuesday to all.

The reason for this major fence on the harbour, is that it is protection for the cruise ship docks area. Not only is this the main (but not only) place where cruise ship passengers disembark, but I've also seen military ships from other countries docked here. I've posted a similar view previously, but taken in the summer.
This Polyphemus Caterpillar was munching away almost non stop on a bunch of Maple Leafs.

A fallen branch from an old Oak tree where I sit to rest sometimes.
It's a tree of imagination, of great power.
Not a place of reason, but of calm reverence and acceptance.
All losses are caused by different reasons, but a select few of them happen because something was straight out taken from us, or we were taken ourselves. Imagine being not only stripped of your clothes, your dignity, and your pride, but also being forced to go along for the ride. A ride that involves no acceptance, no going with the flow, no ability to fight, just being absolutely forced to comply with everything and everyone being taken from you.
This can all be metaphorical to describe a situation in your life, but it can also be exactly what it describes. Sex trafficking is still a very real thing and is one of the worst kind of losses you can go through as a human being. Did you know that over 27 million people a year are forced into jobs, not just sexual ones, but hard labor jobs as well? You hear about the numbers sometimes of women and girls forced to be sex slaves, but you don't hear about the number of slaves working on farms, ranches, in mines, and this doesn't even include the number of inmates locked up on bogus crimes and forced to do the jobs society has deemed undesirable. Silenced, subdued, shackled, and sometimes raped repeatedly, there are depths a person can fall into that are unimaginable while the rest of the world declares "We should do something." While sipping their starbucks, and going to get a massage on the weekend at the spa from one of the trafficked women in town.
Next time you feel like you've lost everything, just remember there's a lot further you could fall, and your situation can most likely be fixed a lot easier than some other people's darkest days.
this photos seems to be incrementally accumulating false viewing stats, for reasons known only to flickr. it started getting extra views in, i reckon, early january 2023 and has now got about 1100 more than it would have under normal circumstances (17 02 2023). this might not sound too bad but it's a real distortion of reality and i am very unhappy about it.

Happy Saturday for Stairs!
My two favourite birding locations in Ontario - Pelee Island and Prince Edward County - both jut into bodies of water and mark the southernmost tips of their regions. As a consequence, both areas host significant wine-making operations, which in turn attracts boutique hotels and restaurants and a very different kind of tourism.
The odd thing is that both areas have managed to retain large areas of very rough terrain for wildlife, and these tend to be unpopular with the folks from Ottawa and Toronto who are visiting for other reasons. That is quite obvious when backroading: driving on the many dirt roads that crisscross the areas near the water. Barred Owls, Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks, Bald Eagles, and even the occasional Upland Sandpiper are fairly common sights on these rarely travelled routes.
I was alerted by my friend Paul to the location of a Red Fox den on one of these roads, and made a point of keeping my eyes peeled for adults and kits. This adult was spotted hunting for rodents along a grassy ridge alongside one of these roads.
I slowed down and stopped, pulling off on the opposite (wrong) side of the road, and then turned off the engine. Unlike the tamer Red Foxes around Ottawa, who are more used to sharing space with humans, these creatures are more skittish. Homes are pretty scarce in this area, and the Foxes are more natural predators.
In any event, I figured I had about thirty seconds to work. I had the windows down and my camera ready to go on the front seat. I wanted to really lean out of the window to avoid heat waves distorting the image. The Fox had just failed to catch something and had assumed a very focused pose, planning its next move. A short burst of three images and it was gone into the tall grasses of the nearby field.
One reason I love this season, aside of the marvelous foliage, is that sunset is coming a tad sooner than in other times of the year. This is great when you want to really take advantage of the great light sunset gives you and it's easy to complement an afternoon hike with some sunset shots before leaving.
This small lake is usually inhabited by ducks, but at the moment of this shot it was very peaceful, ideally so for this take. I was in awe with the colour of the sky and how it reflected on the water! Given how many overcast days we get at this latitudes, this is unfortunately not so common
I took this snap many years ago using a tiny, inexpensive pocket camera and have posted it before but thought it was too bright and cheerful to be forgotten.
Not sure what was going on with this youngster, but as I passed it, it seemed alone and forlorned hiding there in the deep brush. Maybe it had somehow gotten separated from its mother. Or, hopefully, it was simply waiting for its mother to return.
I moved on and hoped for the best for it...
We all love nature and its animals, but they don't have it easy and it's tough to live a high quality life in the wild! All the more reason we should do our best to live peaceably and reasonable with our wild animal friends.
Demons of Reason by Maghda, the June-July 2024 exhibition
@ Nitroglobus main hall
Maghda returns to Nitroglobus with another impressive exhibition, showcasing superb monochrome black-and-white art with a touch of green. These pieces tell the story of the nasty demons that can haunt and blur our thoughts.
I have been following Maghda's art since her return to SL, and in my opinion, this is one of her best exhibitions. Therefore, I am very grateful she created these works for Nitroglobus.
I especially love the bottles Maghda used in most of the works, which Adwehe created in 3D to 'dress' the gallery space and complete the exhibition's look and feel.
Walk past the artworks and appreciate the quality of Maghda's images as well as the emotions they evoke.
I am sure you enjoy this exhibition as much as I do.

My sincere thanks to David Silence for the excellent poster he created, based on a work of Maghda, and to Adwehe for making 3D art that perfectly fits the mood of this exhibition.

Description by the artist:
The Demons of Reason lurk in the shadows of our thoughts, challenging the clarity of our understanding.
These elusive forces twist logic and distort perceptions, leading us into the labyrinth of irrationality.
They whisper doubts and fears, causing us to question even the most evident truths.
In this eternal struggle, the Demons of Reason remind us of the fragile balance between knowledge and ignorance.

I had a hard time with getting the subject into focus today for various reasons. Any tips on using a big lens and shooting moving targets would be appreciated.
