2016 marked the 5th year for TEDxOhioStateUniversity. This year’s theme, Reconstructing Reality, featured students, faculty, staff, and alumni as speakers and performers who inspired and challenged our concepts of science, technology, history, and life. This was shot with the earlier photo interactive, there is a conceit in the photo, most of the people you see are part of a projection, but there is an observer as well. Begging the question what is reality?
Reality is a fiction. I learned it early in life, and it was through photography.
When I was a child, there was a cardboard box with photographs in my house. I usually spent a lot of time watching the images. There were two in particular which caught my attention. In one of them I was a baby, sitting near to another baby who looked exactly like me. In the other one I was a little girl, mounted alone on a horseback.
I learned later that my father had been responsible for supporting both fictions. The first image had been a multiple exposure. In the second one he was behind the horse, holding me in a subtle way.
In the Zebra Project I have revisited those memories, constructing a possible fiction of my body. By combining important elements of my subjectivity -light and shadow, black and white, memories of zebras, skin, window and stripes-, I have composed either almost abstract storyboards -which may be considered chapters of a possible autobiography -, or minimal self-portraits.
This year’s annual Murder Mystery, which will be put on by the Friends of the Villa Park Library October 31 through November 2 at the Library. The play has been described by directors Lynn Hippensteel and Meredith Meder as “a hilarious concoction that is about 50% Apprentice and 50% Survivor, with just a touch of Willy Wonka.”
