My friend Michael Naimark is exploring new ideas for virtual reality experiences, in collaboration with Google and other researchers. To discuss this work, we got together with two other colleagues, Steve Gano and Jim McKee -- with whom we worked at the Apple Multimedia Lab in the eighties, pushing the envelope on related questions.
We started with a tour of the historic Sentinel Building in North Beach, home of American Zoetrope -- where Francis Coppola worked on many cinematic masterpieces like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. We checked out the underground screening room and sound mixing room where some of that work took place, then headed upstairs to Michael and Jim’s studios, for a wonderful conversation about the new VR frontier.
Michael and his colleagues are researching how people are represented in virtual reality. Their first experiment at Google’s “Big Chairs” Park led to some helpful guidelines on how to film people for VR, by using different camera angles and distances.
They’re also investigating ‘hyper-images’ that resemble a group of people, but that are shot at different times and composited together to create both ‘credible’ and ‘incredible’ pictures. To enable more experiments like these, Michael is developing ‘IMU VR’, a new type of camera that could make it easier for communities to tell their stories in VR. More on this later.
It was great to reconnect with my colleagues and brainstorm these ideas together. It felt like the good old days, and the creative juices were flowing all over again ...

AR artist, Gahlord Dewald, is modelling it here for us. And he looks crazy.
This photo portrays reality in a sense of way of how housing can be clustered. In addition, an ordinary home would have less meters than that outside. I dont like this photo merely because it's not eye-catching or doesn't have anything relevant shown. I like how I can say a lot about it and tell you my beliefs. This picture reminds me of a home in a third-world country since they don't have the technological advances to have everything easily accessible or just one meter for everything. The studium is a boy watching over his home. You can tell that he can't wait to leave home since he's still wearing his PJ's, assuming that he just woke up. It shows how life at home for him is and how he anticipates the day by looking out the window. The punctum would be the four holes on the upper right corner of the photo. I choose this because it made me wonder what's the use of it? Is it a ventilation? The white threaded substance is blocking a hole. Is it preventing something from entering?

The market hall in the style of Hundertwasser was built from 1998 to 2001. In the meantime it was converted to an event hall. Now 15 years later the first repair works are required. The unusual look of the building is deceptive over the fact that there is a conventional construction of concrete and masonry beneath the decoration. Reality Is Malleable - We were out here chatting for maybe five minutes before we noticed there was a hammer hanging on the piece. Upon closer inspection we noticed there we lots of hammer marks on the metalic plate. So we figured you were encouraged to hit the peice with the hammer. It was very satisfying. Most Burning Man art is like this. Each piece has layers and more depth than first appears. So remember to always dive in. This is especially true if your internal judgemental voice says something negative. Also, nice to meet you!
