Y-NTW1501 heads back to Northtown with a pair of former Santa Fe motors and 10 autoracks from the Bluff. This job normally returns to Northtown light power, so I lucked out that they had cars and the correct leader to boot. The BNSF 542 was recently reactivated after spending a couple of years in storage at Northtown. It looks absolutely horrible and needs to be put out of its misery as soon as possible.
A temporarily reactivated YN2 CW40-9 leads a work train south on the former Clinchfield as it passes Dante, VA.
W3, currently targeted as S3a, resting on 1 road at Flemington Car Sheds with full single deck set F1 behind. The lead car is C3702 on this set, which is currently seating reactivation to be part of the Sydney Trains Heritage Fleet. The set was released earlier in 2021 from Eveleigh Carriageworks were it had undergone an overhaul by volunteer organisation Historic Electric Traction.
A pair of former Santa Fe units, a B40-8 and an SD40-2, lead the appropriately named "Santa Fe 112 Job", BNSF train T-KCS1-28R, out of KCS's Knoche Yard on the North Main as they approach Olive St en route to BNSF's Argentine Yard with a transfer.
At this time in 2016, the Knoche to Argentine transfer was an afternoon/evening regular, more often than not running out the west end of Knoche via Lydia Ave. As the years went on, it became increasingly more common to see it also run out the east end of Knoche via West Wye - Air Line JCT, and today, they don't run out the west end at all even if they wanted to do so as The Incline at Broadway, which connects the UP KC Metro Sub to the KCT, is off limits for everyone except the UP.
The BNSF No. 580 was the only B40-8 assigned to Kansas City, and one of only a few active on the entire system at the time, too. It was built as the ATSF No. 7430 in July of 1989, wearing Santa Fe's yellow and blue "Yellowbonnet" paint scheme. After the merger with the BN, it became BNSF No. 8620 and was repainted into the Heritage I paint scheme. It eventually found its way into Kansas City in 2012 to be assigned to yard jobs and transfers after being reactivated from storage for 3 years. It was renumbered to 580 in 2014 and continued putting in time around KC until 2017, when it was bad ordered and stored at Topeka, KS, eventually placed into LUFS status. Galveston, TX became its new home for some time as it and many other "vintage" OOS locomotives awaited their fates. Larry's Truck Electric acquired it in early 2023, and it was moved out to Ohio to be sourced for salvageable parts.
The day I shot this photo was the first time I had seen this B boat outside of Argentine for about a year, as it had been captive on yard jobs there for that time. I ran into several more times leading trains around town that same year, and a few more times in 2017 before it was done for good. The wagon wheel on the nose wasn't in the greatest shape, but the rest of the engine held up pretty well. I've always loved the mean look of the standard cab Dash 8's. This one also had a great Leslie air horn, too. 5/28/16.
Since a couple of years DB Netz is unwilling to reactivate this railway line further north, despite some lost court cases.
The last cut of loads dips into the first of two submarine bridges on the Beech Mountain. It was a good run, here’s to the possibility of reactivation.

The low walls of the slightly rebuilt Relics of Recreation and Reactivation still have an abiding air about them. The Sauna Room of the Four Temperature Controlled Rooms here catches the shadows falling into the structures as the light streams past.
Mediobogdum Roman Fort on Hardknott Pass in the Lake District has some great slightly rebuilt ruins. The light on this evening was a splendid Sun bath and banquet lighting the way to older notions and even initiation upon a ladder of lights that illuminated all of the ways to become enlightened, ignited and rejoicing in the light. This remote mountain pass with amazing ruin is an almost unbelievable location to find history and to enjoy mystery.

While certainly not surprising, it's still a shame that one of the last 20 cylinder SD45's will likely meet the torch soon. Stored LUBO since late 2021, the #346 was the 3rd of the final 3 SD45's to be reactivated for one final go around. The #355 was the first in early 2017, followed by the #382. After a few HPH trips the #382 went back into storage, never to run again. The #346 was then pulled from the deadline and given new life. It proved versatile, running in everything from helper to switch service. It really found its home on the LAUBOZ however, often paired up with the #355, ensuring it was always close to a maintenance base when issues cropped up. After electrical issues sidelined the old girl in 2021, she's been in Livingston ever since, suffering the same fate as the #382; slowly donating parts to keep the #355 running. Now pictures indicate the torch will come soon, and I'm glad I was able to document the last days of the 20 cylinder monsters in Montana.
Ohio Central's ZVL job pops out of the tunnel in Cambridge with the 3185 leading, a Super 7 recently reactivated, but likely to be retired by the end of the year. Sure, it's not 4029, but it's likely my one chance to catch a Super 7 in active service, so I'll take it.
The CP2600 series locootive were retired between 2011 and 2013. With the first 12 having been build in 1974, and another 9 in 1987, this doesn't look all the abnormal. However, after years of being stored and seemingly destined for scrap, some of them were slowly reactivated and overhauled from 2019 onwards. With another part of the Douro line being electrified it looks even more of them might getg reactivated.
The original colour of all CP2600's was orange. However with the reactivation and overhaul some of them got a more modern livery. The 2604 is one of those. During a winter evening, when the local were wearing thick coats and me just a shirt, the 2604 was on its way from Valença to Figueira da Foz. Normally the IR services from/to Valença start/end at Porto. However this last one of the day continues south from Porto. During the stop at Porto Campanhã station, I was able to capture the train on photo.
Maumee & Western (ex-ATSF GP7u 2759) #4 and C&NC (ex-NdeM) GP38-2 #20 shove a string of empty Winchester & Western sand hoppers backwards between the abutments of Pennsy's abandoned Indianapolis-to-Columbus line at Cambridge City, IN. This, part of a greater collection of routes that stretched from St. Louis to Philadelphia.
Officially known only by its initials "C&NC", the Connersville & New Castle railroad operates between Beesons and New Castle, IN on former Nickel Plate trackage...with reporting marks "CNUR"...and interchanges with the Big 4 Terminal Railroad at Beesons...which operates on actual former Big 4 (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway) trackage between Beesons and Connersville...using the same roster...but both are owned by RMW Ventures LLC.
Anyway, they've recently been retrieving stored cars for reactivation. Only on this day, they were putting some, like this string of W&W hoppers, back in storage. After several visits over the past 10 years with zero action on this shortline, it was neat to finally see something happening.
While two employees in leap-frogging trucks guarded every crossing, the engineer shoved back all the way from Connersville to a couple miles north of New Lisbon, a distance of about 20 miles.
This is, by now, one of my last pictures of IC 2085 "Nebelhorn" (departing as IC 2083 "Königssee" in Hamburg-Alona). Rumor has it that this lovely long-distance train will be reactivated in the new timetable in December 2019.
42105 and 42103, working together for the first time since their reactivation, head for Moss Vale with East Coast Heritage Rail's "Cockatoo Run" as 5L21.

For as long as I can remember the River Fal near Trelissick in the west of Cornwall has provided a safe haven for ships that are usually temporarily laid-up and mothballed or awaiting disposal. The ships keep a skeleton crew for ship maintenance.
A number of ships were moored here during the late-2000s financial crisis, as falling global trade meant a smaller demand for ships to move various cargoes. Falmouth Harbour authority charges companies for usage of the river until the ships are either reactivated, scrapped or sold.
The MV Alkyon, pictured, is a handysize bulk carrier which, in a somewhat unusual case, is currently being held here pending the results of legal proceedings.
The River Fal (Cornish: Dowr Fala) flows through Cornwall, England, rising at Pentevale on Goss Moor (between St. Columb and Roche) and reaching the English Channel at Falmouth. On or near the banks of the Fal are the castles of Pendennis and St Mawes as well as Trelissick Garden. The River Fal separates the Roseland peninsula from the rest of Cornwall. Like most of its kind on the south coast of Cornwall and Devon, the Fal estuary is a classic ria, or drowned river valley. The Fal estuary from Tregony to the Truro River was originally called Hafaraell (Cornish: Havarel, meaning fallow place).
During times of reduced global trade, ships are mothballed in the upper parts of the estuary of the River Fal. The ships, using the Fal estuary due to its depth and protection from the elements, keep a skeleton crew for ship maintenance. A large number of ships were moored in the estuary during the late-2000s financial crisis, as falling global trade meant a smaller demand for trade ships. Falmouth Harbour authority charges companies for usage of the river, until the ships are either reactivated, scrapped or sold
Hey Friends and Followers, its been a while since my last post. Just thought to reactivate my Flickr to keep in touch, btw thanks for still following me after that long time. Yes, I still do photography, but I'm kind of a lazy/shy social media person ;). Or sometimes I just think my photos aren't good enough to show. Nevertheless i want to be more active here, so be warned :P
Florida East Coast Railroad's Bowden yard 905 job shoves a pair of loaded cement hoppers down the overgrown, recently reactivated spur to Titan Florida in Jacksonville, FL. After one and a half years of no service, Titan now receives cement hoppers and loaded boxcars of cinder blocks for distribution at this location. I also finally managed to get a dark blue Geep working here, now I just need a sunny shot of them spotting a boxcar here. All the cinder block to the left came out of boxes.
Providence and Worcester GP38 number 2011 pulls two gons and a tank car out of the recently reactivated spur to Safety-Kleen Systems. From what can be seen in old satellite and street-view imagery, this spur has been abandoned since the late 90's, seeing its first train sometime between 2016 and 2018. Now the industry is switched almost daily by P&W's PR-3, a common sight for the two local business employees focusing their attention on the photog rather than their closely parked van which has caught the engineer's attention.
Do you love Volvo? I do ;-)
Nikon FM2 with a Nikkor 50/1.8 and Fuji Velvia 50 - "SOOC"
Finally I made it, sorting out my old slides. The colours of Fuji Velvia 50 are wonderful. I wondered, how good the quality is after scanning. This is so to say a SOOC picture. After seeing so many photos taken with film nowadays, I'm playing with the thought of reactivating my old Nikon FM2 and shoot some films.
After being withdrawn in November 2014, CFCLA recently decided to reactivate GL104. After a successful test run the week before, GL104 was dispatched onto Sydney Rail services container train 2194N from Goulburn to Botany, and is seen here dropping down into Picton Tunnel, with VL358, a well loaded train of 60ft container wagons.

Crossing the Missouri River Bridge as it leaves Big Lake, MO and enters Rulo, NE on the BNSF St. Joseph Sub is BNSF train E-MONNAM-008A led by a pair of SD70MAC's in BN's Executive paint scheme. Due to a work window, this train is running the St. Joe Sub all the way to Lincoln today instead of the Napier Sub via Pacific JCT as most westbounds typically run.
Several of these SD70MAC's have recently been pulled from storage and reactivated for service. 4/11/21.

A reactivated SD9043MAC scoots past Kansas City's Union Station on Main Track 4 of the KCT East-West Corridor at Penn Ave. Interlocking as it leads UP train AASNP-09.
For most of 2018, traffic levels had warranted the need for additional power, and UP reactivated SD60/SD60M's, Dash 8's Dash 9's and what was left of SD9043MAC's on their roster. This is right before the dawn of PSR, and this was most likely the last really "fun" year before things took a nosedive in terms of unique and eclectic power.
This was also the last time SD9043MAC's were in service on the UP. Many had already left the roster after UP sold 100 of them to NS in September 2014 to be rebuilt into SD70ACU's. Since 2018, CP had purchased 42 of them for their own SD70ACU rebuilds as well. Many of what were left have met the torch. 6/9/18.
C510, BRM002, 603 and C505 work loaded grain train 3242 from Calleen to Allied Pinnacle at Maldon through the Redbank Deviation towards Picton.
Third unit 603 was on trial after its recent reactivation to service following 11.5 years of storage.

Another recent reactivation (of the diesel kind), 44202, leads 1107 and CM3316 south through Cheltenham with an empty QUBE grain. Prior to being used on this train, 44202 had been sitting in Cardiff for nearly two years.
Making good time on its way to Rigby from Lowell, Pan Am's SEPO blasts through busy Old Orchard Beach on a Saturday evening. They have an extremely uncommon, all EMD lashup consisting of three SD40-2Ms (two SD45 bodies, and one SD40 body) and a lengthy train of about seventy cars. While a week ago it wasn't looking too good for Pan Am's twenty SD40-2s, with only two in service, six more have been reactivated this week, and even better, have been running around in matched consists with each other.

CSX manifest M367 roars through Erie, Pennsylvania as it splits the passenger platforms at Erie Union Station on a summer afternoon. Reactivated from storage lines, a pair of well worn veteran GE's in the form of Dash 8 7793 and Dash 9 9016 power the train west. Once home to 4 islands of passenger platforms, only two remain in intact with the one shown here the only one in service for Amtrak's Lakeshore Limited.

It's January in Canada. The temperature is in the minus double digits. The wind is 40km/h straight off of Lake Ontario. But there's a small problem: CN 149 has just departed Belleville with a recently reactivated BCOL 4625 in the lead. And better yet, the crew has thoughtfully turned the classification lights on. What do you do? The obvious answer is drop everything and freeze while waiting for said train to show up.

Another recipient of the Portuguese Rail Renaissance are the 2600 series class electrics. Closely related to the SNCF 15000 Class, construction commenced in 1974, but all were withdrawn from service by 2013.
The first one was reactivated to service in 2019 and now there are approx 10 back in traffic all used in the passenger sector on the Figuera de Foz - Porto - Valenca corridor.
The castle on the hill dates from 1160 and is one of the oldest castles in Portugal.

Easing up to Napier Center just north of Forest City on the BNSF St. Joseph Sub is BNSF train E-MONNAM-008A led by a pair of SD70MAC's in BN's Executive paint scheme. They'll sit here for a little bit with one ahead of them at West Napier, which is waiting for two eastbounds. Today, they'll continue on the St. Joe Sub all the way to Lincoln instead of the Napier Sub via Pacific JCT as westbounds typically run.

Having finished their work at Casella Waste Systems, the crew aboard their trusty old CF7 departs Holyoke, MA for the return trip to Westfield. Casella and Sonoco Products are two customers located behind the facade of a number of classic old brick warehouses. On the front of these buildings runs the recently reactivated canal track to the Pan Am interchange right down the middle of the street. Unfortunately, the PVRR had no cars to interchange this day, but the weather played along for some great shots of the backside of business. Holyoke, MA

Woodstown Central Photography Day 2025 was hosted by the Friends of Philadelphia Trolleys and organized by Railfan Magazine. It was a very long day and night spent with 50 or so fellow photographers.
The recently repainted and reactivated former Reading EMD FP7 pair was used for a quick night shot outside of Woodstown.
Going through 1200 or so images is going to be quite a long and laborious chore. But someone has to do it.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada – September 2025: The Oculus Pavilion, a striking mid-century modern structure in South Humber Park, features a dramatic circular concrete canopy supported by slender white columns. Designed in 1958 by architect Alan Crossley and engineer Laurence Cazaly, this sculptural shelter embodies the optimism and futuristic spirit of postwar Toronto park design.
Once a neglected relic, the pavilion has recently been restored through efforts led by Giaimo Architects and the City of Toronto, preserving its unique “flying saucer” form and reactivating it as a community gathering space. The site now stands as a rare surviving example of modernist park architecture, set amid the wooded landscape along the Humber River.

When Union Pacific removed its fleet of DDA40X locomotives from long term storage in 1984, 25 were reactivated to service and the remainder were retired. UP 6944, 6920, 6933, and 6915 await an uncertain future, pictured at North Yard in Salt Lake City, Utah on Aug. 11, 1984. Two of the four double diesels were donated to museums. UP 6944 to the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri and UP 6915 to Southern California Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona, California. UP 6920 and 6933 were scrapped. Info from UtahRails.net
With some EHH teething problems going on with CSX there has been an influx of power being reactivated. Here is an example as CSXT 4827 leads a priority intermodal just outside of Ripley NY.
A recently reactivated C40-8 is on the point of UP Train MMCSAS 01 headed south at 12th Street on the UP KC Metro Sub. I never thought I'd be excited to see one of these, but I was. Back when these were the only engines I saw (and rode on) I wasn't too fond of them. Amazing what 5 years will do you your perception.

CP Train 492 out of Superior had a treat on the tail as Soo caboose #1 was deadheading from the Twin Ports to the Twin Cities for LakerRail. The head end of 492 included two Soo units with the 4413 and 700 trailing red CP 8757. Soo GP30 700 was also heading from the Lake Superior Railroad Museum to St. Paul for next weekend.
Soo 1 looks right at home here on May 24, 2019, crossing the former Soo Line Nemadji River bridge south of Boylston, WI. If you use your imagination you can picture this as a Soo Line freight running towards the Twin Cities when they used this same bridge as part of their route via Danbury and Dresser. The Soo abandoned this line in 1986 after they got the Milwaukee Road trackage rights from the Twin Cities to the Twin Ports. BN reactivated this section of the Soo Danbury Line a couple of years later. Unstable soil on their former GN route around the Nemadji River forced them to build a connection to this short section of the former Soo Line.
SOO 6044 is the trailing locomotive on CP 633 on 3/2/2014. These locomotives were aged quite well by the time we were all freaking out about them in 2014, the battle scars didn't shake our love for them though. I dig the P5 it got around the time of reactivation.
A pair of aging YN2 CW40-8s pass by the L&N searchlights at Paris as they close in on Patio, where they will drop off and pick up to turn back to Cincinnati. CSX recently reactivated several Dash 8s once again, and many can be found in the Cincinnati area. The Patio turn was short lived, as a new pair of freights between Cincinnati and Waycross were added that handle Patio traffic again.
The recently reactivated 37402 'Oor Wullie' finds employment at the head of 1Q18 Network Rail PLPR Test Train on Friday 31st Janaury 2025. The Class 37 locomotive, now run by Andania Engineering after its sale by DRS, waits for the green light along the Great Eastern Main Line. The freshly repainted British Rail large logo locomotive gleams under the night sky and bright lights late into the evening.
Was blessed with clear skies and a perfect evening to shoot Neowise in Morro Bay. So happy I got the chance to see and photograph this memorable event, and I couldn't ask for a nicer setting.
An interesting note:
The Satellite WISE was launched from our very own Vandenberg AFB on 12/14/2009 for the purpose of Wide Field Infared exploration. In Sept of 2010 it ran out of the necessary cooling hydrogen for that purpose and went into hibernation. It was reactivated in Sept of 2013 to use the still viable camera to search for Near Earth Objects (NEO), thus officially being renamed to NEOWISE. It discovered the Comet which they also named NEOWISE in March of 2020.
