A recently reactivated (at the time this photo was taken) SD70MAC leads M583 north past some parked racks at the south end of Harper Siding on the CSX Abbeville Sub. Assuming there was no room at the inn at TDSI or Palmer Yard, these loaded autoracks sitting ~20 miles from their destination are another example of PSR causing things to happen that never used to on this line.

It has been WAY too long since I've shot something green with its BN logos still intact out on the road. Well today made up for it, train G-DAMPEI hosted a duo of recently reactivated SD60M's for power making for a much needed chase south!

The Susquehanna inspection train for its management and BOD to get a first view of its new route between its Southern and Northern Divisions rolls through Franklin, New Jersey. The recently reactivated former Lehigh & Hudson River main line’s weed-grown look and out of service searchlight signals don’t give the impression that this line now hosts several stack trains per week.

"Strength and Braveness"

Unfortunately, the Ceva-Ormea branch line became victim of the disastrous flood of the last 24 Nov.2016. With the Hope of a quick reactivation of the line, i'd like to show you the beauty of this railway. On the last 11 September 2016 a "Centoporte" (Hundred-Doors) Heritage train full with passangers passed the Tunnel near Isola Predosa, hauled by the D345.1142 running from Torino to Ormea.

The two Cartier’s and a rent a wreck shake the earth at Cobbs gap as they lift PO74 out of Winton after making a grain pickup. After getting clouded at the Erie Jessup Branch trestle it was nice to be able to dodge some clouds here and get sun. Due to 3 out of 4 of the regular 6 axles being shopped the DL reactivated the 3602 and 3612 and sent them into service on Monday.

What we see is a young female of Sympecma fusca and the title comes from the fact that it is the only Odonata that spends the winter as an adult in Europe. They emerge in summer or at the end of it, when the cold arrives they will seek refuge in the vegetation near the water, they will enter a lethargy and with the first heat of February, depending on the area, they will reactivate. The males will look for the females to reproduce, they will spawn in tandem and once the egg hatches, the larval period will last between 8 and ten weeks, before the new generation will emerge again.

SFG Train 565-2 rockets down CN's Mont-Joli Subdivision, making full use of the speed limit as the crew makes a midmorning run for Campbellton, NB.

At Campbellton, a GP38-2 will be dropped and a RS18u-3 will be added for the return trip to Matapedia. I have been lucky enough to catch this unusual move twice on my visits. These are done, so locomotives can be serviced/repaired at SFG's locomotive shop in Campbellton.

The train is passing through the short tunnel at Tide Head/Morrissey Rock. This tunnel is the only active tunnel in New Brunswick and is maybe 100 feet long. The tunnel was cleared for stacks at some point, since the Mont-Joli and Newcastle Subdivisions are used as a detour route, for the more well traveled Pelletier and Napadogan Subdivisions, when those are shut down due to derailments (such as one in 2021). Other than the light power moves, VIA traverses the line about three times a week along with a handful of trips by CN 558 and 562.

Since the arrival of the HLCX GP38-2's last year, most of the SFG RS18u fleet had been stored. However, during the summer the railroad began running shuttle trains from a quarry in Nouvelle to Maria where the materials were transloaded onto trucks. From there it took a short drive to the nearby beach, where Beluga Construction was doing a major beach replenishment project, to repair decades of storm erosion.

The added business resulted in most of the RS18u fleet being reactivated. Unfortunately, I never got to shoot the shuttles which were sometimes doing 4 trips a day, with two separate trains due to work. So when I was finally able to get a week off in December, I headed north. The plan for this day was to shoot the light power running to SFG's engine shop then back to Matapedia, where they were going to grab a train before heading to Nouvelle to tie down. After catching that, my plan was to shoot the shuttle train that was made up of both sets of cars. Due to the cold, material was freezing to the cars, so only one trip per day was possible by this point.

Unfortunately, they had so many issues with unloading cars on this day, that they decided that the remaining material could be trucked, so I never did end up shooting the stone shuttles. But I was lucky enough to catch 4 different MLW's on this visit. Only a few days later, 3 of the 4 active RS18u's would be taken back to the shops for storage. With the regular service to Port-Daniel delayed again, they will likely remain stored for the time being.

The Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof is part of my daily commute. The 1906 built station features an impressive trainshed and has not really changed much in the last decades. However, its extremely rare that there is anything interesting to photograph here, with all trains operated by modern EMUs or DMUs. However, the annual Christmas trips on the Ländchesbahn provide one such rare opportunity. The trips have been organized the last 3 years by the Nassauische Touristik Bahn which is working to reactivate the Aartalbahn which extends from Wiesbaden into the Taunus mountains. As the NTB has no serviceable rolling stock of their own, they have to borrow equipment from other local clubs. The past 2 years this has been the 52 from the Frankurter Museumsbahn, but this year equipment came from Darmstadt and Hanau. The result was a very authentic Bundesbahn train with matching Class 23, the last class of locomotives to be built for the West German railway. Here the train waits for its 18:45 departure back towards Hanau.

My new hard drive was installed yesterday and tonight i started reloading my software onto the computer. I have a Photoshop problem now......... I can not Activate Photoshop because the Adobe message says I have exceeded the number of activations allowed and I have to Deactivate it before I can reactivate or purchase another license . My problem is I can't deactivate because it was lost on the hard drive crash and the 2 previous total system restores. If anyone has ever had a similar problem I would appreciate if you would let me know how you resolved it. I really don't want to have to purchase another license.

Union Pacific 6918 passes ABS 9566 at the east end of the old center siding in Henefer, Utah. If you look closely, 6918's sanders are turned on. The 25 reactivated 6900s have less than a year of service remaining. Time was running out for UP's double diesel era.

This image was scanned from a Kodachrome slide in grayscale. Trust me when I say the tonality is far better in black & white.

The reopening of EVTAC as United Taconite in late December 2003 resulted in DM&IR reactivating their five remaining SD-Ms to handle the increased traffic. Here three SD-Ms and a SD38 lift empties up Proctor Hill on a snowy day in February 2004.

A NS SD60 and a NS C40-8 lead NS 866 west through Hobart Indiana. Both of these units are recent reactivations for increased traffic.

On this day in 2015, An EB UP train with a reactivated SD9043MAC in the lead is at Rochelle, IL. The train also has 3 other SD9043MAC's in the lashup. The UP was short on power, and brought some of these units out of storage for a short period of time. Some even getting wings applied to the nose, as seen by the third unit (#3666}.

One of the main reasons for our visit was to capture the four reactivated U30Cs and C30-7s on LS&I's roster. At first we were disappointed to find out only two daylight jobs would be operating on our first day since they have three sets of CEFX leasers still on the property. But as luck would have it, they used two C30-7s on the 7-weigher while the 7-yard/hill would have two CEFX leasers.

With the 7-weigher heading out of Eagle Mills light power to Tilden and its return several hours later than normal, the options were few and the light is less than optimal, but I can't complain since there is only a handful of places left to shoot these rare birds anymore.

Pan Am Railways GP40 (high hood) 380 leads the combined wreck train past MP-100 at Burnham Jct, ME on 3/21/2020. The train was on the return trip from Northern Maine Junction after cleaning up several loaded LPG tank cars which derailed and rolled down an embankment in Etna, ME a week or two prior. The 380 was having a hard time on this day, which required a running start to make many of the hills. At the end of the train, SD40M-2 3405 was isolated. As for the 380, it was reactivated to handle detour traffic, as a result of the CN rail blockades in February of 2020. However, this would prove to be the last stand for the Pan Am high hoods. Upon reaching Waterville, the 380 was cutoff the train and had the water drained after being taken into the shop complex. The 380 would be cut up by LTEX crews at Waterville before the end of the year (despite a few interested parties) ending the high hood era on Pan Am.

Doug Harrop Photography • July 2, 1984

Doug and his family lived in Mountain Green Utah in Weber Canyon. He could view Union Pacific's Overland main line from his home. I have no doubt this train caught his eye and he gave chase.

Union Pacific brought 25 DDA40X "Centennial" locomotives out of long term storage during a traffic surge in Sept. 1983. UP 6902 was one of the lucky members reactivated. Here it leads a hot eastbound train of perishables and piggyback trailers out of Wilhelmina's Pass through the green fields of Henefer on July 2, 1984.

Four decades later, we are fortunate Doug captured this moment on Kodachrome for us to enjoy.

Characteristic is the visit of the three fountains , in the lower part of the village, which have been recently reactivated and a well restored. The territory offers naturalistic attractions, but also of industrial archeology such as mills. The view of Bosco Magnano is interesting for those coming from the Valle del Sinni , and the courses of the Peschiera and Frido torrents. Once you have passed the village and continuing south you reach the hamlet of Mezzana, divided into four villages; continuing you arrive at the sanctuary of the Madonna del Pollino which rises on a rocky outcrop in a panoramic position over the whole valley of the Frido. The absence of smog and large centers makes it possible to observe the stars in the municipal area in an optimal way, so that the town of San Severino Lucano has been defined by the amateur astronomers "the country of the stars ".

While there are innumerable photos of the Arizona Eastern, Copper Basin, Apache, and even the Freeport McMoran Copper Railroad, you will have a hard time finding a single shot of the Arizona Central in operation. Well, six years after my initial visit, I was finally able to catch the Clarkdale Arizona Central Railroad in operation once again. What was once a weekly run has picked up to two to three runs a week, which has prompted the reactivation of a third unit. The power, which is one of the finest assortment of first generation Geeps to be found, has a unique paint scheme and lacks ditch-lights across the roster. Unfortunately, a pair of second generation Geeps were brought in by the end of that week to "complement" the fleet. I hope these units continue to be the predominant source of power as they are just so classic!

The lead unit, AZCR 2164, is a 1950 built and later Santa Fe rebuilt GP7u. Second is AZCR 2279, the recently returned to service highnose GP7 built in 1952 and originally operated for the TPW. This unit was not in operation six years ago, and was revitalized to accommodate increased traffic. Third in the consist is former Southern Pacific AZCR 3413, a highhood GP9R built in 1956.

The railroad services the Clarkdale cement plant (Salt River Materials Group) with coal and outbound cement. It appears that on occasion, the plant will also take delivery of boxcars. The line runs from their customer in Clarkdale, AZ to the BNSF interchange in Drake, AZ. Half the line leads through canyon territory where the Verde Canyon Railroad operates excursions. Unfortunately, that portion of the line is completely inaccessible by car.

Here the trio of first generation Geeps lead empty coal hoppers and loaded cement hoppers through the mountainous landscape of Williams, AZ. With a 0430 departure out of Clarkdale, the crew broke daylight in Perkinsville, AZ, on its roughly four hour journey to the interchange in Drake. The set of power almost perfectly fits in the gap of trees and shadows in this elevated view taken near FSR 492A. There are about five or six shots to be had between Perkinsville and Drake if you have a four wheel drive with good ground clearance and a slight disregard for driver safety. The chase requires flying down dirt roads that are in incredibly bad shape with severe potholes and littered with large rocks. The Arizona Central remains one of my all-time favorite railroads and I'm happy to see a third unit operating! I truly hope the new power does not replace these units. It's a difficult chase, but very worth the effort.

Woodstown Central Photography Day 2025 was hosted by the Friends of Philadelphia Trolleys and organized by Railfan Magazine. It was a very long day and night spent with 50 or so fellow photographers.

The recently repainted and reactivated former Reading EMD FP7 pair was used for a quick night shot outside of Woodstown.

Going through 1200 or so images is going to be quite a long and laborious chore. But someone has to do it.

Royal Gorge Scenic's Lunch Train winds it's way west along the Arkansas River and out of the Royal Gorge with the classic recently reactivated EMD F9A/B set.

Once the Tennessee Pass main of the mighty Rio Grande Railroad, this scenic railroad keeps the look of their classy passenger trains alive, while the Union Pacific and Rock & Rail keep the freight side somewhat busy at times tag teaming efforts on servicing customers from the stone quarry in Parkdale down along the line to Pueblo.

The bridge over the Mandau River was closed for construction during the first half of 2022. During this time, SOEG's narrow-gauge trains were unable to reach the shed and workshop at Zittau Main Station. The old, long-time unused shed in Bertsdorf was reactivated for this period. I really wanted to capture this situation. In my opinion, the best way to do this was to illuminate the inside of the shed. Mid-April was the last chance to do so before the days got longer again.

I already showed the main shot from that day a while ago (see below).

Y-NTW1501 heads back to Northtown with a pair of former Santa Fe motors and 10 autoracks from the Bluff. This job normally returns to Northtown light power, so I lucked out that they had cars and the correct leader to boot. The BNSF 542 was recently reactivated after spending a couple of years in storage at Northtown. It looks absolutely horrible and needs to be put out of its misery as soon as possible.

While we continue to suffer from winter storms I thought I'd look back to sunnier times last summer.

For as long as I can remember the River Fal near Trelissick in the west of Cornwall has provided a safe haven for ships that are usually temporarily laid-up and mothballed or awaiting disposal. The ships keep a skeleton crew for ship maintenance.

A number of ships were moored here during the late-2000s financial crisis, as falling global trade meant a smaller demand for ships to move various cargoes. Falmouth Harbour authority charges companies for usage of the river until the ships are either reactivated, scrapped or sold.

The MV Alkyon, pictured, is a handysize bulk carrier which, in a somewhat unusual case, was being held here pending the results of legal proceedings.

This picture was taken from the King Harry Ferry, which runs from Trelissick Gardens across the River Fal to the Roseland Peninsula.

The set was released earlier in 2021 from Eveleigh Carriageworks were it had undergone an overhaul by volunteer organisation Historic Electric Traction.

A pair of former Santa Fe units, a B40-8 and an SD40-2, lead the appropriately named "Santa Fe 112 Job", BNSF train T-KCS1-28R, out of KCS's Knoche Yard on the North Main as they approach Olive St en route to BNSF's Argentine Yard with a transfer.

At this time in 2016, the Knoche to Argentine transfer was an afternoon/evening regular, more often than not running out the west end of Knoche via Lydia Ave. As the years went on, it became increasingly more common to see it also run out the east end of Knoche via West Wye - Air Line JCT, and today, they don't run out the west end at all even if they wanted to do so as The Incline at Broadway, which connects the UP KC Metro Sub to the KCT, is off limits for everyone except the UP.

The BNSF No. 580 was the only B40-8 assigned to Kansas City, and one of only a few active on the entire system at the time, too. It was built as the ATSF No. 7430 in July of 1989, wearing Santa Fe's yellow and blue "Yellowbonnet" paint scheme. After the merger with the BN, it became BNSF No. 8620 and was repainted into the Heritage I paint scheme. It eventually found its way into Kansas City in 2012 to be assigned to yard jobs and transfers after being reactivated from storage for 3 years. It was renumbered to 580 in 2014 and continued putting in time around KC until 2017, when it was bad ordered and stored at Topeka, KS, eventually placed into LUFS status. Galveston, TX became its new home for some time as it and many other "vintage" OOS locomotives awaited their fates. Larry's Truck Electric acquired it in early 2023, and it was moved out to Ohio to be sourced for salvageable parts.

The day I shot this photo was the first time I had seen this B boat outside of Argentine for about a year, as it had been captive on yard jobs there for that time. I ran into several more times leading trains around town that same year, and a few more times in 2017 before it was done for good. The wagon wheel on the nose wasn't in the greatest shape, but the rest of the engine held up pretty well. I've always loved the mean look of the standard cab Dash 8's. This one also had a great Leslie air horn, too. 5/28/16.

The last cut of loads dips into the first of two submarine bridges on the Beech Mountain. It was a good run, here’s to the possibility of reactivation.

Reactivated IAIS SD38-2's 153 and 151 lead the daily transfer to the CP over Harrison Street in downtown Davenport, IA.
