Shot from Banzhangshan (板樟山, Banzhang Mountain), the highest mountain in urban Zhuhai at about 290m above sea level, reachable via a 2,000-step staircase. You may want to see this in XXL. Looking north-northeast (for south view with smoke from a forest fire which made me get stuck on top of the mountain click here).

The prominent road is Yingbin Avenue - separating the New Xiangzhou (left of the road) and Xiangzhou districts. New Xiangzhou also features Zhuhai's sports center with the massive stadium which in November 2024 was the scene of a vehicle ramming attack.

To the right are some of the communications and fire watch towers on top of the mountain.

Urzela, a Boeing 929 hydrofoil aka "Jetfoil" caught south of Lantau Island while I was on the way from Zhuhai to Hong Kong (China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon side).

The Zhuhai - Hong Kong ferry I was on was the biggest and fastest of the fleet, doing about 35 knots (65 km/h) at that moment, according to my GPS handset.

That hydrofoil (coming from Macau also going to Hong Kong, Macau Ferry Terminal, Sheung Wan, HK island side) was passing us doing about 45 knots (84 km/h).

This speed difference and the fact that most of the boats from Macau went to Hong Kong Island instead of Kowloon was one of the reasons I frequently took the boats from Macau instead of Zhuhai (where I actually lived at that time), because my HK office was in Central on HK Island.

No-one on earth could feel like this.

I'm thrown and overblown with bliss.

There must be an angel

Playing with my heart.

I walk into an empty room

And suddenly my heart goes "boom"!

It's an orchestra of angels

And they're playing with my heart.

(Must be talking to an angel)

No-one on earth could feel like this.

I'm thrown and overblown with bliss.

There must be an angel

Playing with my heart.

And when I think that I'm alone

It seems there's more of us at home.

It's a multitude of angels

And they're playing with my heart.

[Chorus repeats]

I must be hallucinating

Watching angels celebrating.

Could this be reactivating

All my senses dislocating?

This must be a strange deception

By celestial intervention.

Leavin' me the recollection

Of your heavenly connection.

Shanghai Xupu Bridge (徐浦大桥) the southernmost of Shanghai's huge bridges. A mini-panorama stitched from 2 shots, taken from the balcony of the apartment I was living at that time. The distance to the bridge is roughly 6,000 metres.

This shot would be impossible to do nowadays (2024), as more highrise apartment towers have been built in the line of sight during the past 19 years - these buildings block the view of the entire bridge, just the tops of the pylons could be seen.

The entire set of operations took about 2 hours and consisted of frequent takeoffs, landings; hovering and taxiing (both with and without the runway and taxiway lights on) - surely appeared to be flight school or night familiarization.

Severe Tropical Storm "Kammuri" was standing some 60 nautical miles south of Zhuhai. The strong ocean swell caused huge waves to crash against the seawall of the promenade on Lovers Avenue (情侣路).

What's usually a crowded place with couples strolling in the warm evening breeze was now nearly deserted. Just a few daring people were out and got wet.

And this is only a tropical storm - rest assured: when we had a genuine Typhoon it looked different and nobody would be here at all.

A trio of GP60s power Union Pacific local LPS15 across Rough Creek near Weingarten, Missouri, on the Ste. Genevieve Industrial Lead. The train is headed southwest with 20 loads from Mississippi Lime near Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.

Flood walls along the Mississippi River have cut off the traffic's normal route north from Ste. Genevieve utilizing trackage rights on BNSF's River Subdivision. When this happens, Union Pacific reactivates the western 28 miles of this industrial lead to access UP's Desoto Subdivision at Bismarck and keep Mississippi Lime from shutting down.

When the Mississippi River stays within its banks, it can be years between trains on this scenic, but hard to shoot section of UP.

In its 160-year history, many keepers and their families have tended the light. Also known as the Crescent City Light Station, the lighthouse was operated by the U.S. Lighthouse Service until 1936 when the U.S. Coast Guard took over operation and maintenance. The light was automated in 1953, but the Coast Guard continued to maintain the Fifth Order Drumm lens until 1965 when it was decommissioned. The light was then reactivated as a private aid to navigation in 1982.

During the 1964 tsunami, the resident keepers were stranded in the lighthouse. Although there was no damage to the lighthouse itself, the trapped keepers were helpless as they watched in horror throughout the night as the series of waves wreaked havoc on the mainland and swirled around the base of the lighthouse. The keepers provided a terrifying eyewitness account of the destruction caused to Crescent City.

The USS Lexington (CV-16)

The Japanese gave her that name because they thought they had sunk her several times. Here's more information

nicknamed "The Blue Ghost", is an Essex-class aircraft carrier built during World War II for the United States Navy. Originally intended to be named Cabot, word arrived during construction that the USS Lexington (CV-2) had been lost in the Battle of the Coral Sea. She was renamed while under construction to commemorate the earlier ship.[4] She was the fifth US Navy ship to bear the name in honor of the Revolutionary War Battle of Lexington.

Lexington was commissioned in February 1943 and saw extensive service through the Pacific War. For much of her service, she acted as the flagship for Admiral Marc Mitscher, and led the Fast Carrier Task Force through their battles across the Pacific. She was the recipient of 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation. Following the war, Lexington was decommissioned, but was modernized and reactivated in the early 1950s, being reclassified as an attack carrier (CVA). Later, she was reclassified as an anti-submarine carrier (CVS). In her second career, she operated both in the Atlantic/Mediterranean and the Pacific, but spent most of her time, nearly 30 years, on the east coast as a training carrier (CVT).

Lexington was decommissioned in 1991, with an active service life longer than any other Essex-class ship. Following her decommissioning, she was donated for use as a museum ship in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 2003, Lexington was designated a National Historic Landmark. Though her surviving sister ships Yorktown, Intrepid, and Hornet carry lower hull numbers, Lexington was laid down and commissioned earlier, making Lexington the oldest remaining aircraft carrier in the world.

The Krzemieniec Secondary School was a Polish school in Volhynia, existing in the years 1805–1831, reactivated in the years 1922–1939, also known as the Volyn Athens. It played a significant role in the development of the level of Polish culture in Volhynia.

The school was founded by Tadeusz Czacki, with the participation of Hugo Kołłątaj. It was located in the seat of the former Jesuit College in the architectural complex of the Wiśniowieccy Palace (shown in this photo). Juliusz Słowacki's father was the teacher here.

After the fall of the November Uprising, the tsarist Russian authorities closed the school. Even trees from a rich botanical garden were taken away. After the Second World War, the school and church buildings were further devastated and looted.

Wywieziono nawet drzewa z bogatego ogrodu botanicznego. Po II Wojnie Światowej budynki szkoły i kościoła uległy dalszej dewastacji i rozkradzeniu.

Montana Rail Link SD45 No. 377 pops out the the east portal of Mullan Tunnel west of Skyline, Montana, on September 3, 2003. The unique “squirrel cage” round duct structures on both side of the portal hold ventilation fans that are used to evacuate exhaust smoke and fumes from the bore. They were installed by Northern Pacific in 1948, with twin 250-horsepower fans blowing air out the west portal. The fans were deactivated by BN in the 1970s, but MRL reactivated the right one in 1993 to help with smoke issues. Both were removed in June 2009 as part of extensive Mullan Tunnel clearance improvements.

Neowise was addicting for us and we found ourselves where the skis were predicted to be clear. We ended up at Carrizo Plains on this night and I was able to get both the setting moon and the Comet . The moon is actually just a crescent, but with the 10 second exposure it appeared fuller.

An interesting note: The Satellite WISE was launched from our very own Vandenberg AFB on 12/14/2009 for the purpose of Wide Field Infared exploration. In Sept of 2010 it ran out of the necessary cooling hydrogen for that purpose and went into hibernation. It was reactivated in Sept of 2013 to use the still viable camera to search for Near Earth Objects (NEO), thus officially being renamed to NEOWISE. It discovered the Comet which they also named NEOWISE in March of 2020.

Eldgjá 20210717

Eldgjá is an old tectonic graben that was reactivated in a huge eruption in 934-940. The Eldgjá vents form a discontinuous 75 km long volcanic fissure extending from the Katla volcano in the west to Vatnajökull in the east. The eruption in 934-940 takes its name from a spectacular 150 m deep and 8 km long chasm called Eldgjá (fire fissure) that occupies the central part of the vent system. Part of the fissure is under the protection of the Vatnajökull National Park.

This is a site of international geological significance. Ófærufoss is a distinctive two-tiered waterfall cascading into the fissure Eldgjá.

This pair of SDs only roamed around for a few weeks last winter before they were put back into storage, supposedly due to high fuel prices. They ended up coming back out again in July to help cover for few GEVOs that were down for repairs. By late summer, another SD was reactivated for an expected uptick in traffic on their Peoria connection. Sadly this traffic never materialized and all 3 were stored again before the leaves had fallen.

SS New Jersey (BB-62) is an Iowa-class battleship, and was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named after the U.S. state of New Jersey. She was often referred to fondly as "Big J". New Jersey earned more battle stars for combat actions than the other three completed Iowa-class battleships, and was the only US battleship used to provide gunfire support during the Vietnam War. During World War II, New Jersey shelled targets on Guam and Okinawa, and screened aircraft carriers conducting raids in the Marshall Islands. During the Korean War, she was involved in raids along the North Korean coast, after which she was decommissioned into the United States Navy reserve fleets, better known as the "mothball fleet". She was briefly reactivated in 1968 and sent to Vietnam to support US troops before returning to the mothball fleet in 1969. Reactivated once more in the 1980s as part of the 600-ship Navy program, New Jersey was modernized to carry missiles and recommissioned for service. In 1983, she participated in US operations during the Lebanese Civil War.

The upper terraces at Canary Springs which are part of Mammoth Hot Springs are composed of calcium carbonate. The chalky white and gray colors show where there is no current hot springs flow or terrace building. Active terraces are colored by orange, yellows and cream colors caused by thermophilic organisms. The water for the hot springs comes from precipitation in the surrounding mountains that runs down into the subsurface. The water is heated at depth. As the water rises it dissolves limestone in the subsurface beneath Mammoth and the surrounding mountains. The hot carbonate rich water comes to the surface and forms the travertine terraces. Geologists estimate that at any given time about 10% of the water in Mammoth Hot Springs is on the surface. The other 90% remains underground.

Thermal features at Mammoth hot springs are always changing. Activity moves from place to place and active terraces grow quickly. Dead trees mark areas that were once vegetated before the springs moved on to it. Some features dry up while others appear or reactivate. Even with these changes the overall activity of the entire area and the volume of water discharge remain relatively constant.
