Yet another morning where I decided to foam instead of sleep for work, but I think it was for a good reason. One of the best looking warbonnet B40-8Ws, 558, has been reactivated and running on trains out of northtown for a couple months now. I've been really itching to catch it, unfortunately it was conflicting with my work schedule many times it ran, so my hopes were dashed for a bit. However, the stars finally aligned this morning. Several parties were saying 558 was leading GFDNTW, and checking Perham at 2 AM showed it was, with some other odd units in the consist. I decided around 5 to bite the bullet and head to Elk River, not sure if I would even get the train in sun or not. I debated going to downtown to catch it, but I wasn't sure how the shadows would be there, and since it was on the wrong main it wouldn't be the angle I had in mind, so I settled for the crossing east of town. A few minutes after arriving, I heard a horn honk in Elk River, and not long after the headlight appeared. Here, GFDNTW flies east out of Elk River, with a hell of a consist to boot. Nice when things finally go your way for once, eh?
Something I never expected to see again; A recently reactivated YN2 CW40-8 and CW40-9 lug 100 cars of Hagerstown local freight through Smithsburg, MD on the former Western Maryland.
Here you are, I was waiting for you
I was here waiting for you for a long time
so much so that I was about to leave
and instead I did well
You are my first thought that
in the morning he wakes me up
the last wish that
the night cradles me
you are the deepest reason
of every gesture of mine
the most incredible story
that I know
I know
Here you are like a hurricane of life
and you're here I do not know how you did it
take me from my sleep to shake me
and reactivate my heart
You are my first thought that
in the morning he wakes me up
the last wish that
the night cradles me
you are the deepest reason
of every gesture of mine
the most incredible story
that I know
Here you are finally here
and you're here you do not know how much I missed you
I hoped you existed but I did not imagine so much
You are my first thought that
in the morning he wakes me up
the last wish that
the night cradles me
you are the deepest reason
of every gesture of mine
the most incredible story
that I know

The light station at Prospect Harbor was authorized by Congress in 1847 and went into operation in 1850. At that time Prospect Harbor was home to a significant fishing fleet. The light was deactivated in 1859, after the United States Lighthouse Board claimed it was not needed because the harbor was not used as a shelter during storms. It was reactivated in 1870. In 1891 the station was rebuilt; the present tower and keeper's house date to this period. The brick oil house was added in 1905. The light was automated in 1934, but keepers remained on site until 1951, when its Fresnel lens was removed and replaced by modern optics. The station last underwent major restorative work in the early 2000s; it remains an active aid to navigation. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Prospect Harbor Light Station in 1988. (Wikipedia)
The two-story building called Gull Cottage sits on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Satellite Operations Center on Lighthouse Point on Prospect Harbor's eastern shore. The building is used for any retired or current military staff that want to use it as a rental. The fire happened in June 2022.
In what is some of the classiest street running trackage left in the country, PVRR 7030 and 2647 take their train down Water Street past a series of old mill buildings. The train is returning from the Pan Am interchange; this spur was reactivated the beginning of this year after lying dormant for six or seven years. Holyoke, Ma

When Union Pacific reactivated some of their Centennial fleet during the Summer of 1984, I was only fortunate enough to catch one leading on just three occasions. This was also the only time I witnessed two in the same train!

It is only mid-June and in going over photos already taken this month I am overwhelmed by the volume and the task of deciding which I might upload. This happens every spring, perhaps explained by this image....a simple look at a feature of a type found throughout the woodlands. Every walk or venture out on the lake yields endless photo ops and by the time I get back, I find I have inevitably taken between 50-100 shots. I probably have many years of accumulation which I have never properly looked at because the next day adds to the volume.
This is the time of year when the green is stunning in its perfection. Even using the magnifier, which I encourage, I challenge you to wander the woods and try to spot even a touch of brown on any of the fresh and perfect growth. And with blue skies peeking through the canopy, all one can do is breathe deep and be grateful.

As an aside, I was happy to see Flickr reactivated the note function lost for no apparent reason in all the changes a few years ago. While I never abused it, it could be useful in a number of ways. For those unfamiliar with it or, like me, couldn't figure out to use it now, or don't want to use it or have it used on their images, here's the tutorial: www.flickr.com/help/forum/en-us/72157668990488722/
The year is 2023, and some of the SD70M-2’s are back in service. Some have been sold off and others have been sitting in dead lines in various yards out of service since 2019. But with NS being power short, those remaining were reactivated. Here 2662 leads manifest NS 19M west through Montgomery tunnel. I last shot this unit in May of 2018. It’s nice seeing some of their older units coming back.

The line on the left (Juarez) had been abandoned for decades between Teoloyucan (Juarez-35_ and Cuautitlan (Juarez-28), but recently, Ferrovalle reactivated that 7km stretch and transformed into 2 sidings, it's gonna be neat seeing trains run on that line again.

Nikon FM2 with a Nikkor 50/1.8 and Fuji Velvia 50 - "SOOC"
Finally I made it, sorting out my old slides. The colours of Fuji Velvia 50 are wonderful. I wondered, how good the quality is after scanning. This is so to say a SOOC picture. After seeing so many photos taken with film nowadays, I'm playing with the thought of reactivating my old Nikon FM2 and shoot some films.

A loaded BNSF coal train for Michigan crosses the Sanitary and Ship Canal over a remarkable collection of four Scherzer rolling lift bridges at Ash Street interlocking. Built in 1909-1910 by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Works, these bridges carried the PRR (Panhandle), B&OCT, and CJ over the Sanitary, and they became known as the "Scissors" bridges for their collective lift mechanism. Although the bridges no longer lift, two of the bridges have remained in service with a third bridge being reactivated for the Draper Connection.

Small minor eruptions like the one pictured are common for Steamboat Geyser in the Back Basin of Yellowstone National Park’s Norris Geyser Basin. These minor eruptions come from both the north and south vents and reach heights of between 6 (2 m) and 40 (12 m) feet. Steamboat does have significant but rare major eruptions. During a major eruption Steamboat shoots water more than 300 feet high (91 m). The water phase of these major eruption last between 3 and 40 minutes followed by a steam phase that can last hours to days. It is currently the tallest active geyser in the world. The interval between major eruption has been over 50 years. With that said, currently Steamboat Geyser is in a rare active phase. Since the geyser reactivated in early 2018 until July 3, 2020, Steamboat has had 104 major eruptions. In fact this photo was taken on June 11 between a major eruption on June 8 and June 12, 2020. (Got to be lucky and/or willing to wait for a long time to see this one.) The logpole pines (Pinus contorta) behind the geyser are dead or dying due to the frequent eruptions that cover them with silica rich water.
The Apache Railway's first windmill parts train was on its way from Holbrook enroute to Snowflake this morning. The late morning departure allowed for some different views with the sun still mostly on the east side of tracks.
Sandy Hook - Fort Hancock
Fort Hancock is a former United States Army fort at Sandy Hook in New Jersey. The coastal artillery base defended the Atlantic coast and the entrance to New York Harbor, with its first gun batteries operational in 1896. Between 1874 and 1919, the adjacent US Army Sandy Hook Proving Ground was operated in conjunction with Fort Hancock. In 1946 it was determined that gun defenses were obsolete, and Fort Hancock's guns were scrapped. The fort was deactivated with the demise of the Coast Artillery Corps in 1950, but a year later was re-activated as a base for 90 mm and 120 mm antiaircraft guns, the first stateside Cold War defenses. The fort was deactivated again in 1953, but reactivated in 1956 as a Nike missile base. Fort Hancock was decommissioned as an active U.S. Army installation in 1974. It is now part of Fort Hancock Memorial Park. [Wikipedia]
It's been a while since I've caught CN's Dash 8s pulling a freight train. There are still many up here working out of Proctor and Two Harbors on the ore/limestone trains, but here two C40-8s pull a Proctor Transfer up Steelton Hill in the far west end of Duluth on May 27, 2022.
The lead C40-8 has spent much of the past two years in storage at Winnipeg but was recently reactivated. It's no stranger to the area as it is one of the 2100s that worked the limestone and T-Bird trains on the Missabe years 2011-2020. These CN 2100s that worked out of Proctor were sent to Canada for storage when Covid slowed down traffic in 2020. A couple of other once familiar 2100s have also been reactivated from the Symington deadline and are again working on the T-Birds.
The trailing Dash 8 (CN 2013) has straight air and usually works ore assignments as the coating of taconite dust indicates, but it also found its way onto this Pokegama Yard to Proctor transfer symbolled K511.
This lighthouse that stands on the outside is perhaps not those most elegant lighthouse I have seen . It does have a certain charm though I like the name Bug light though its official name is the Portland Breakwater Light
The lighthouse was first built in 1855, as a wooden structure, but the breakwater was extended and a new lighthouse was constructed at the end of it in 1875. The new lighthouse was made of curved cast-iron plates whose seams are disguised by six decorative Corinthian columns. Its design was inspired by the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens, made well known by engravings. The architect was Thomas U. Walter, most noted as the designer of the U.S. Capitol east and west wings and its current dome. Wooden sheds and a six-room house for the lighthouse-keeper were added incrementally as needed. In 1897 Spring Point Ledge Light was erected and the houses around Bug Light were demolished and the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse keepers tended to both lighthouses. Because of the smaller breakwater, there was a lesser need for the lighthouse and it was decommissioned in 1943. However the light was fully restored in 1989 and was reactivated in 2002. It appears as a private aid to navigation in the US Coast Guard Light List as South Portland Breakwater Light. Today a park named after the lighthouse, Bug Light Park, allows visitors to view the Portland Breakwater Light up close, while memorializing the shipbuilding efforts of World War II. The light was added to the National Register of Historic Places

CSX Transportation (that still doesn't sound right) train Sappi-4-23 crosses Martin Stream in Fairfield, ME on 10/23/2022.
In recent years, solid Guilford lash ups have been increasingly hard to get after the great purge of 2020. However, on occasion they do manage to get paired up and that is what happened on this day.
Who knows how much time these units have, but so far Maine has been (luckily) spared from the homogeneous CSX power. Most of the units being sent to Waterville have either been reactivated for use elsewhere on CSX, or have been parted out. So, for now the "old" stuff continues to hold down the assignments.

30 years ago on November 14th, 1986, SNCF BB20011 seen in Den Bosch. The locomotive was hired from the SNCF/Alsthom to performe a number of test runs. The NS (Dutch State Railways) was gathering information for the new 1700 locomotive class. The first Loco of this class entered service in 1991 and at the moment only a few of the original 81 locomotives are still in service, mainly on the Amsterdam Berlin Intercity service and a number have been reactivated to run with the Dubble decker cars.
Nowadays a class 1142 solo in front of a freight train happens only on rare occasions. But business goes well for Rail Cargo Austria at the moment - resulting a lack of engines within the ÖBB. So some of the already retired class 1142 engines were reactivated. At the 21st of April 2016 i took this picture of ÖBB's 1142.618 with a short mixed freight train at Gleinkerau - heading towards Selzthal.

For as long as I can remember the River Fal near Trelissick Gardens in the west of Cornwall has provided a safe haven for ships that are usually temporarily laid-up and mothballed or awaiting disposal. The ships keep a skeleton crew for ship maintenance.
A number of ships were moored here during the late-2000s financial crisis, as falling global trade meant a smaller demand for ships to move various cargoes. Falmouth Harbour authority charges companies for usage of the river until the ships are either reactivated, scrapped or sold.
This is a sunken river valley (or ria) that provides a deep water harbour. The picture was taken from the King Harry Ferry.

In the last moments of daylight on 4th November 2022, Freightliner’s 66956 eases away from West Burton A power station in Lincolnshire with empty coal hoppers.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the subsequent sanctioning of Russian coal, and restrictions in the supply of Russian gas have caused economic shock across Europe.
To supply the continent’s energy needs, domestic coal production has increased, and old coal fired power stations have been reactivated.
2,100 km from Kyiv, Mr Putin’s invasion has even impacted remote, rural Lincolnshire. One 550mw generating set at the 55 year old West Burton A power station has been reactivated, ready for use when cold weather returns in the winter.
To build up stocks, in late September 2022 trains of imported coal started running into the reactivated West Burton and Drax power stations.
Here at West Burton, unloading was complicated by the previous demolition of the coal handling plant, with unloading now using temporary conveyers being bought on site.
Coal for West Burton was being railed from Immingham, with (reports suggest), 130,000 tonnes of South African coal being stockpiled.
if the coal is South African, it was won from mines in Mpumalanga province, railed approximately 400 km to Richards Bay, shipped 15,000 km along the west coast of Africa and the Bay of Biscay to Immingham, for its final 100km journey to the power station.

The Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest Glockenspiel is a symbol of our community’s rich German Heritage. Our original 23-bell Glockenspiel was delivered in 1976 to K-W Oktoberfest Inc. and erected at Speakers Corners on Benton Street. It is an animated musical tribute to the famous Grimms’ Fairy Tale – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and is meant for the enjoyment of the citizens of Kitchener-Waterloo and visitors to our community.
The Glockenspiel was originally activated in 1976 during the opening ceremonies for the 8th Annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest festival. In 2009 it was removed for refurbishment and after 6 years of planning, fundraising and technical updating, it was reactivated on October 5, 2015 for the festival’s 47th anniversary. While the original Glockenspiel could only play a single song, it is now capable of performing a variety of melodies. Its animated show runs four times daily at 9am, 12pm, 3pm and 6pm during the spring, summer, and fall seasons, and hourly 9am to 6pm throughout the Oktoberfest festival.

As can be seen from the few photos posted, July was a rather stable and very hot month, in particular between the 13th and 25th, when, in fact, a highly unstable weather phase began which reactivated my interest in meteorological photos, in summer only those break boredom and send the large and boisterous "summer people" home...😂👍❤
Eldgjá canyon (South Iceland) 20210717
Eldgjá is an old tectonic graben that was reactivated in a huge eruption in 934-940. The Eldgjá vents form a discontinuous 75 km long volcanic fissure extending from the Katla volcano in the west to Vatnajökull in the east. The eruption in 934-940 takes its name from a spectacular 150 m deep and 8 km long chasm called Eldgjá (fire fissure) that occupies the central part of the vent system. Part of the fissure is under the protection of the Vatnajökull National Park. This is a site of international geological significance. Ófærufoss is a distinctive two-tiered waterfall cascading into the fissure Eldgjá.

Populonia owes its fame not to its fortress but to the fact that it is the Etruscan Pupluna or Fufluna, one of the oldest and most prestigious human settlements in all of Tuscany. The finds discovered in its vast necropolis confirm that the area was inhabited at least since the Neolithic period. century BC. Pupluna was one of the most important cities of the Etruscan civilization, as evidenced by the fact that it was the only one, among the largest, to arise on the coast. This allowed the city to be a point of reference both commercially and industrially between the centers of the hinterland and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, thanks to the many metal smelting furnaces installed in its vicinity.
The urban nucleus was made up of two parts: that of the Acropolis, high up overlooking the Gulf of Baratti, and the "industrial" part, on the coast, equipped with port facilities and furnaces. Like all Etruscan cities, Populonia also experienced decline with the progressive growth of Rome's power, also suffering serious destruction at the hands of Silla during the civil war against Mario. Already in the 1st century AD the city was deserted, with houses in ruins and abandoned ovens. In the following centuries there were attempts to reactivate the port and the industrial activities connected to it, but on the whole life in the city never regained great vigor, also due to the invasions and pirate raids to which it was exposed. Populonia was reborn in the Middle Ages when in the 14th century it was decided to equip the village with a castle that still today, although remodeled, dominates the hill of the ancient Etruscan Acropolis. The Rocca appears to us with the shape and classic characteristics of fortifications that underwent major changes during the transition period from the medieval castle to the bastioned military architecture at the end of the 15th century.

I'd went west in search of the last few operating CNW GP30's in September 1988. These units had been stored for a long time and were reactivated by CNW as they were to be sold to the FRVR operation in WI. The three 30's that CNW made operational that were to be included in the sale were working out of Chadron to Belle Fourche. On September 12, 1988 I ran into a very late running BFPRA out west of Belle Fourche on the line to Colony. It was nearly dark and the train was operating eastbound so the light sucked but here's my CNW 30 Thursday shot. 815, 814, 831, 4117, 4502 and 4562 roll east. I tried looking at Google Earth to see where the industry to the left is but couldn't really see anything that resembled it now west of Belle Fourche.
MPRVP heads west behind a pair of big SD9043MACs. UP recently retired the remaining units of the fleet, marking the end of a failure filled era.
These units began suffering from cracked frames around 2013, which resulted in the entire fleet being stored. In 2014 quite a few had their cracked frames repaired, and at the same time, received wings on the nose. Despite the repairs, all were placed back into storage by the end of 2015. A few were reactivated in mid-2018, until they were stored for good a few months later. It's a shame that these units were despised by crews and plagued with issues, as they looked pretty cool.

CN 395 grinds upgrade at Copetown with CN 5794 leading the charge and 172 cars. Of note, recently reactivated BCOL 4620 trails third.
a B/W of a scene already posted in color but which also deserves this version; the shot from the summit of the Weisshorn shows in full view on the left the symbolic peak of Switzerland that needs no introduction while in the center and "smaller" with its only 4221m there is the Zinalrothorn, while on the right stands the great Dent Blanche measuring 4357m;
Matterhorn for completeness of data measure 4478m;
as a brief memory of that day I add that climbing up to 4505m in late autumn involves many complications; for example that day a tremendous wind was blowing and the temperature was already given at -20, with the wind it was perceived as if it were -25 / -30. I remember well that I was very hesitant at the idea of taking out the small Powershot and that cost me a painful frostbite on my hands and it took me a long time to reactivate the normal blood circulation; all in all today I look at the images from up there and I tell myself that that pain in my hands was really worth taking!
