go off the rails (informal)

to start behaving strangely or in a way that is not acceptable to society He went off the rails in his twenties and started living on the streets. By the law of probabilities if you have five kids, one of them's going to go off the rails.

These are the tracks I grew up on the wrong side of!

Clapper Rails are often heard but not seen, in the thick reeds

that they call home...they have a loud clicking call and a rapid abrupt call...I can't believe I managed to catch this one in the middle of the rapid call to another Clapper Rail on the other side of the slough!

Here's a Youtube video of their loud, abrupt call...it starts around 40 seconds in...it can startle someone, especially when several hidden Clapper Rails chime in at the same time!

Thanks to my talented contact cormend for inspiring the title from a shot from last year.

I didn't find time to shoot too many compositions with the Train of Lights on the Niles Canyon Railway this year. But, it was quite an adventure procuring this one.

I wish everyone an enjoyable and meaningful holiday season and---already---happy new year!

As always, thanks for your support!

Maenofferen slate quarry, Blaenau Ffestiniog. This track formerly led to the top of Rhiwbach No 2 incline. The line on the bridge over continued on to the tips. On the right, over the bridge, was the start of Rhiwbach No 3 incline.

I just liked the way all the lines lined up here. Contax IIIa, Ferrania P30, Rodinal 1:50.

A parting shot of the ZBRLC as they race southbound towards Los Angeles.

WAMX 4219 hits home rails in Slinger leading a very late T003 - probably something like 18 hours late - as they make their way toward Horicon.

With the relief crew on board, they would wait at least 4 hours in Waukesha before the CN dispatcher would let them head north.
