Had the right conditions to capture these tram lines this morning with a low sun and wet rails. I under-exposed by 1.3 stops the capture the lines but brought back some detail in the cobbles.

11/01/2012. After starting an overnight shift at work, I received word that the Monongahela Railway heritage unit went to load at the Loveridge Mine that night. The next morning, I monitored the scanner to listed for the NS N10 with the NS 8025 leading. A quick drive down towards Grant Town, WV found the N10 already departing the mine. A brief run ahead of the train found me at an overpass as the N10 passed the remains of the area's fall foliage and then the chase was on!

Idling on a string of tank cars on 07-12-2021, this Western Rails Inc. SD9 isn’t the prettiest diesel in Warden, Washington. Built for the Southern Pacific in 1955 she has been through a list of owners. She sorts tanks cars at Viterra USA at the largest commercial canola processing facility west of the Rocky Mountains.

Two and a half years ago, KiwiRail's Coastal Pacific skirted the Pacific Ocean at the Irongate Stream. The seasonal passenger train runs out and back on the scenic 'Main North Line' between Christchurch and the rail ferries at Picton.

This section on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island was hit by serious earthquakes on Monday which caused slips, uplifts, and landslides which have blocked and buckled the road and rail in hundreds of locations.

As the first 7.8 M quake struck just after midnight, express freight train 737 was traversing the area, and - per standard procedure - was brought to a controlled halt; with its DXR locos at this exact spot (albeit heading in the other direction).

The loco engineer was airlifted out after a very long wait as the road and rail was buried and many spots on either side of the train, which will likely remain stranded here - strung out between (and through) three closely spaced tunnels - for months.

In the four days since, there have been more than 2500 aftershocks and some wild weather, making rescue and disaster support along this remote coastline difficult.

The town of Kaikoura sits on the more distant peninsula in this picture and is still isolated, although an army convoy is on its way in via backroads as I type this.

US and Australian frigates, in the country for the 75th birthday of the NZ navy, have teamed up with the local military to helicopter and ship out stranded tourists and bring in water, food, toilets and other supplies.

p.s., yes, that is New Zealand's main road, State Highway One, with a 45km (28mph) corner! There are 35s too...

Recently I have burned through another century old photo album, scanning and retouchiing until my brain turned to mush. I am still recovering from my loads of other scanning, retouching, writing and acrobat genealogy manipulations. I grabbed a Google Maps view of an original homestead northeast of Longmont. The settler cut ties and floated them down river for the railroad during the first homestead year. Timing research revealed that was the Denver Pacific land-grant railroad from Denver to Cheyenne. The map view reveals a railroad cutting across the draw east of the homestead. I found it was not the UP RR Dent Branch to Cheyenne but rather, the Great Western Railway branch linking the Longmont G.W. sugar mill with Windsor and other G.W. branches along the route.

This shot was retouched from another album but pertains directly to the homestead. It was taken further along the Windsor route of men riding the "Sugar Tramp" Route atop the caboose. The one explanation for this photo may be not what it represents. These may not be Depression era bums but rather G.W. laborers who travelled from rail side sugar beet dump to dump to load the stashed beets for transport to the mills. They don't look like bums! The passenger service ended before the Depression. Hang on!

After shoving 3 sets of empty frac sand cars down the Cliffs Erie (ex-LTV) mainline east of Mesaba, the engineer notches out the throttle on the pair of NSM SD40-3 locomotives as they make their way back home for the day over weed infested trackage that resembles rails to nowhere.

This building was used as a work station when underwater cables were being run between Ireland and England in the 1880s. It is currently on sale for €165,000 despite not having planning permission to be rebuilt.
