FIAT'S EIGHT-CYLINDER SUPERCAR
The Fiat 8V's legacy as one of the most legendary cars ever built by the Italian brand was established from the start; it would be more than fair to say that the unique supercar caused a stir when it was introduced at the 1952 Geneva Motor Show. Road & Track called it “the biggest surprise of the year,” and The Engine noted that “the last thing expected from Italy's largest car factory was a truly sleek 2-seater sedan.”
This enthusiastic response was echoed by the upper echelon of European men's racers, and for good reason: the 8V's performance was astonishing, capable of more than 120 mph from its 1.996 cubic centimeter narrow-angle V8 engine. Weighing just under 2.200 pounds and sitting on a chassis made by Siata, the 8V is designed for responsive handling thanks to its lightweight frame and relatively powerful engine. The impressive new powertrain was developed by Dante Giacosa, and the 2,0-litre, all-aluminium Tipo 104 engine featured a finned crankcase, forged crankshaft, polished intakes and ports and tubular stainless steel exhaust manifolds. With a tubular chassis, taut unibody and independent suspension all around, this was a very special car.
The short production run, which lasted from July 1952 to September 1954, resulted in the production of 114 examples of the 8V – Otto Vù In italian. Intriguingly, some cars were designed and made almost entirely in-house by Fiat's Dipartimento Carrozzerie Derivate e Speciali, or Special Bodies Department. A total of 63 copies were penned by Fiat's chief designer, Fabio Rapi: 34 cars from the first series and 29 in the second series.
The 8V, which was intended for competition use from the start, turned out to be very successful and the car to beat. Notable results included winning the 2,0 liter class of the Italian GT Championship for six consecutive seasons (1954 to 1959). Perhaps the most spectacular result for the model was achieved by coachbuilding heir Elio Zagato, who competed in the 1954 Coppa Inter-Europa at Monza, a non-championship of sports car racing, and won the 2,0-litre class with a incredible average speed of 97 mph over 49 laps.
8V BERLINETTA OTTANTANOVE
This 8V, chassis number 89, is one of those 29 cars from the second series that received a factory body with Rapi's signature "stacked" double headlights. Factory details in Tony Adriaensens' book Otto Vù from 2006 show it was completed in early March 1954 and delivered new to Vincenzo Orsini's Rome-based Fiat dealer. The 8V remains one of Fiat's most famous and sought-after creations.

Ricordo profumi lontani
desideri ingenui ed ignari
nessuna paura mi scalfiva
nessuna malizia la mente arroventava
senza incubi sognavo
teneramente il cuor mio gioiva,
Scaltro e sincero
attraverso il sentiero
stretto e cupo
senza paura dell'inganno.
Ostentata malinconia improvvisa ...
senza chiedere un giorno mi rapì
mi strappò alla spensieratezza
Dolori e domande senza risposta
inganni e amore irruppero
L'aquilone
ormai è volato via ...
mi resta solo
una dolce e triste nostalgia ...

I remember distant scents
Naive and unaware desires
No fear scolded me
No malice the mind fluttered
Without nightmares I dreamed
Tenderly my heart rejoiced,
Sly and sincere
Through the path
Tight and dark
Without fear of deceit.
Suddenly melancholy ostentation ...
Without asking one day it kidnapped me
I was ripped of care
Uncommon pains and questions without answers
Deceit and love burst
The kite
Now flown away ...
Only left
A sweet and sad nostalgia ...

Here's another post from Saturday morning at Fort Baker. Although I was there for sunrise, I didn't actually see the sun rise. In fact, I didn't even see the sun. Because the fog was so heavy up top, I went down below the bridge to Fort Baker and luckily there was a partial view of the bridge. Having never been there before, and sunrise rapily approaching, Ididn't really have time to scout any comps, so I parked myself on the pier with one or two other photographers, and a couple of fisherman and snapped away until it was light out.
Oh, and one more thing... If you ever want to find every single spec of dust on your sensor, and lens, just shoot into the fog with a tight aperture... Argh... LOTS of spot healing and cloning on this one.
Thanks for taking a look!

[edit] Bianchina
Main article: Bianchina
Bianchina Trasformabile SpecialThe first car to be produced by the new company was the Bianchina, whose name was a tribute to Edoardo Bianchi's first 1899 car. The Bianchina was based on Fiat 500 mechanicals – with its two-cylinder, air cooled engine mounted in the rear – but featured a completely new stylish body designed by Luigi Rapi, who was in charge of Fiat's special body unit and helped to set up production in Desio. With many premium design and equipment features, the Bianchina emerged as an upscale minicar, slotting above the Fiat 500 in the market. Marketed as a "second vehicle in the household", and a luxurious "recreational vehicle", also being targeted at affluent middle-class women, it mirrored the increasing affluence in Italian society.
The first Bianchina rolled from the production lines in Desio on September 11, 1957 and had the unusual body style of a two-door landaulet, called "Trasformabile". It remained the sole body style until 1960, when a two-door "Cabriolet" was introduced, followed by a three-door estate version, the "Panoramica" and a two-door saloon, the "Berlina". Finally, two van versions were launched: one resembling a two-seater version of the Panoramica, and another, with a raised and expanded cargo section.

If the existence of a Berlin Wall memorial in Rapid City seems random, well, that’s mostly because it is. There was no particular motivation for bringing a piece of the wall to the city, other than a whim, according to the man who made it happen. “It was just a neat thing for us to have out here,” 81-year-old Dale Clement recalled this week. The pieces of the wall were installed in Memorial Park in 1996. Its roots lie in a mid-1990s traveling Berlin Wall exhibit that came to the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Clement, who was then an executive at Black Hills Corp., played host to a man who was associated with the exhibit. After the exhibit, Clement took a call from Gale Holbrook, who was then a Pennington County commissioner. Holbrook suggested that since the traveling exhibit had been so successful, perhaps Clement should buy a piece of the wall for permanent display in Rapid City. Clement called his contact with the traveling exhibit, and soon he was the owner of a Berlin Wall segment and a pair of tank traps. The purchase price, he recalls, was a few thousand dollars. Others soon joined the effort to display the newly acquired items, including Paul Reinke, who was an early partner in the project with Clement. The privately financed memorial was erected with interpretive panels and eventually turned over to city ownership. And that’s how Rapid City’s Berlin Wall Memorial came to stand in Memorial Park near the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Clement said it’s a fitting place for a tribute to freedom, given Rapid City’s proximity to the Shrine of Democracy (Mount Rushmore) and also to Ellsworth Air Force Base, which contributed bombers to the 1940s Berlin Airlift humanitarian mission. Clement said it is freedom he will think about this weekend on the 25th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s collapse. “You can tie people up,” Clement said, “but they also have to come free at some time.”

This temporary exhibition was set up to honour the old Ghislain Mahy, by bringing back some iconic items from his collection to the place where it all began: the Ghent Wintercircus.
Unfortunately there were only 10 vehicles on display.
Ghislain Mahy (1907-1999) was a Fiat car dealer and classic car enthusiast who rented this old Wintercircus building for over forty years. Starting in the early 1950s he built up a collection of old and classical cars from more than 950 items. He bought them mainly in France. And many of them were just saved from the hands of car scrapers.
In 1995 Mahy had to leave this special place. His collection was partly sold, the rest was divided over two museums. Restored top cars went to classic car museum Autoworld, Brussels (about 230 items). But the majority, most unrestored cars, found a new home in a new founded car museum in the south of Belgium called Mahymobiles, Leuze-en-Hainaut.

1952 Fiat Zagato SpiderCar S-01 Michelle & Steve Wolf, Wayland, Massachusetts - Only One of this Kind!!
This Fiat 8V (number 000005) is one of the six prototype 8V cars hand-built by the factory. It originally left the a factory fitted with a Rapi body and was run in the 1952 Mille Miglia. The second owner commissioned Zagato to create a stylish barchetta body with no windows to race in the Sport Class. In 1953 it returned to the Mille Miglia
wearing its new Zagato spider body. Just a onth after the Mille, the 8V crashed and flipped over at the Giro di Sardegna and the driver was tragically killed. Since the chassis and engine were largely intact, the car was sent back to Zagato to craft a new body for the car. Zagato made only one more minor modification to the front end in 1955, which is the current body on the car. Number 000005 is the only Otto Vu Zagato Spider ever produced, making this car
a one-off car.

Due to high fuel usage and engine overheating the project wasn't continued.
