Very sad to hear of the passing of Leon Russell. The first concert I ever went to was his Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour with Joe Cocker. Had the pleasure of meeting him this last May at a concert I was photographing, and he was such a nice man. My friend James Gurdine was shooting the show with me and took this photo.
It is with the deepest sadness that I inform you of the tragic passing of Darkdays photographer alias Mr D. The light in my world has gone, I love you ,my darling

This beautiful bull rhino was shot and killed by poachers overnight 28/29th September.
He was shot by a silenced rifle despite being under 24 hour armed guard. The poachers were disturbed and only managed to hack out one of the horns.
We went to a private reserve in February to see Thaba Tholo but fairly soon they will be confined to zoos only.
Whatever their circumstances and no matter why they committed this heinous act I condemn these poachers completely.

I decided I would expand the definition of fence to include this makeshift rip fence. I needed to rip a 2x4 and while I have this table saw it does not have a proper metal rip fence that helps keep the cut straight and true. As you can see, I fashioned a temporary fix using an piece of 2x4 and a couple of clamps to keep it in place. It worked out well as you may see the results. HFF

I had a bit of a traumatic afternoon today! I was sitting drawing and I suddenly heard a thud in the garden. Lina was asleep so I quietly opened the door to see what it was and I saw this young pigeon was in the corner, flapping around in a slightly confused state! I talked gently to it, but wasn't very sure what to do. Unfortunately Lina heard me and came to have a nose too. I held her collar in my hand tightly, but she (Lina) was shivering. I intended to pull Lina away and shut her in the house, but she slipped her little head through the collar and grabbed the bird! I felt awful and chased her into the house, the bird still in her mouth, panicking that it would flutter round the dining room! But Lina had a tight grip and had jumped into her basket. Once she let go and jumped out of her basket I picked it (the basket) and took it outside while Lina was sniffing around the carpet. I was worried the bird was still alive and in pain, but I think it was already dead. I stroked its chest gently and then took it over to the far corner of the garden hoping a cat would finish it off quickly, but as Lina came out sniffing around, I put it in a box in the shed. I didn't know Lina had it in her to kill like this! You usually associate cats with killing birds, but I suppose baby ones are an easy catch for mean dogs, like Lina!! I feel bad that I couldn't help the bird, but Lina is a street dog, with the instincts to match!
The 'funny' thing was, I was listening to a debate on the radio about whether it's cruel to boil lobsters alive when cooking them. Moments later, Lina was out there killing a bird! >_<

Found out early morning that one of our friends had taken hid own life.
I hope he has found peace.
You will be missed..
This black and white can represent my mood for today.
It is with great sadness that I learned that long-time friend and noted rail photographer Dave Augsburger passed away yesterday afternoon. I find that as I process the photos that I post here, I think more about the friends that I was with as well as circumstances and incidents that accompanied the outing than I do the train itself. Dave comes to mind frequently. Beside photography, Dave and I shared interests in history of the Lehigh & New England and other anthracite railroads, prewar American Flyer trains, and Pennsylvania Dutch (German) culture and language.
Here, in happier days, Dave and I were out for the day, and had gone in futile search for an infrequent Conrail train that served the cement mill in Evansville, Pennsylvania, With the day coming to a close, we decided to stop by the Wanamaker, Kempton, & Southern in Kempton. Seeing an opportunity, I had the most prolific photographer of the Lehigh & New England pose next to one of the WK&S’ L&NE gondolas. Dave is now with many of his contemporary friends who have passed in recent years, including Dick Samsel and Neil Shankweiler. I will miss Dave and treasure the many memories of him for years to come.

Jerome John Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995) was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, best known for being a principal songwriter, the lead guitarist and a vocalist with the rock band the Grateful Dead, of which he was a founding member and which came to prominence during the counterculture of the 1960s. Although he disavowed the role, Garcia was viewed by many as the leader or "spokesman" of the group.
