Much of our lot is healthy, mature oak forest. But the areas just below the house are typical California grassland. Scenic though they may be, these are NOT native California grasses but were brought in by the Spanish. One of my goals - a multi-year goal - is to restore much of this area to native plants, primarily chaparral. This is the empty canvas, the blank slate, in fall 2008.

Hey guess whose legs these are? Clue, she's a WIP and when her head is on, she's blonde.

I'm off to the farm for the weekend. Wheee. ^^

12.1.2013. It's not only locomotives that get restored at Barrow Hill!

While cleaning our garage, I found this old, unfinished art piece I had worked on back in 2002, with paint colors from the store I used to work for (Restoration Hardware). I forgot all about this, but I decided ~why not pull it out and update/finish it off? I think the 1st thing I want to do, is get some more colors on it, and and make the pattern more intricate, and less rigid.

We chose to volunteer at a local 30-bed homeless shelter, The Good Neighbor. We were received with open arms by both the staff and residents in spite of all the noise we were making early on a Saturday morning. Due to flooding in the Carolinas, our team was short several volunteers who were out of town assisting with flood cleanup. However, thanks to the remaining dedicated volunteers, we were able to complete all of the tasks requested by the staff.

Our team did a thorough interior structure cleaning and deodorizing of the entire building and contents, cleaned all carpets, pressure washed the exterior of the building and walkways, and repaired all railing around the exterior or the facility. We provided the residents, staff and volunteers with breakfast and a delicious BBQ lunch, which was prepared by a local man famous for his BBQ skills. At our initial visit, we were told pillows were a desperate need, so we donated 30 new pillows and blankets so each resident would have a pillow and blanket as the cooler weather nears. We donated numerous personal hygiene items, and a local hair salon donated 30 free haircut vouchers for the residents. Several volunteers donated clothing, and one employee donated two handmade crocheted blankets that were placed in the common area for all to enjoy. It was a wonderful day of assistance and fellowship that was enjoyed by the residents, staff and volunteers.

The restoration of the staircase to the basement is taking place. The hand rail on the front staircase follows a gracious curve and the baulsters are intact. All are being restored & refinished. The cap on the corner post is being reglued.

My grandma's brother. Second major attempt at restoration from 2008. I find trouble with the arm I added because of his awkwardly facing waist and rumpled shirt. Alas. Who knows what his arm was doing anyway?

Now that I'm nearly done with my Montauk restoration, I found a goatskin with a more appropriate texture. Do I rip off all the leather and start over, or finish the camera with the leather that is now on it?
