What is your best memory of WSSU?
"My best memory was attending the Annual Biomedical Research Conference (ABRCMS) with the MARC U*Star and RISE NGIMS Program. It was a wonderful experience. I got to see friends I've made over the years from other institutions and the graduate school fair was extremely helpful in my decision for the next step. I also enjoyed volunteering at the organic garden down the street."
What do you love about WSSU?
"The faculty and administrators are VERY welcoming. They've provided meals for me, transportation to the airport, taken me to their church and even invited me in to their homes. They really look out for my well-being. I don't have any family nearby so its is wonderful to find so many people that are willing to make sure that I am okay. The same goes for students. WSSU truly fosters a familial environment."
What do you plan on doing after you graduate?
"I expect to start my biomedical sciences PhD at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. I currently have plans to pursue neuroscience however, I am open to whatever presents the most interest during my rotations.
How has WSSU prepared you for the future?
"As a member of WSSU's RISE program, it is expected that we have something lined up post graduation therefore, they are more than accommodating for such preparation. They funded me and several other senior for Kaplan GRE prep, they granted us half off vouchers (we'd only pay $100 instead of the $200), and they wrote AMAZING recommendation letters for each school that I applied. They also guided me in writing my personal statement. In addition to my program, my amazing mentor Dr. Kanu did they same. He also nominated me for several awards that I didn't even know existed, incorporated me into his international Chemist without Borders Sierra Leone Project and facilitated three publications. He would drill me every poster presentation and made sure I was able to explain everything in the simplest way possible (which is not easy) so that any and everyone could understand. Because of his mentoring, I won a poster award at ABRCMS and I also received an honorary second place award through MARC/RISE for Scholarship Day. Presentations are VERY important in graduate school because it is necessary to be able to relay your research. As a transfer student, I don't think I would have found that type of support and encouragement anywhere else.
How has WSSU made a difference in your life?
"I came to WSSU as a transfer student. I walked away from a full scholarship and WSSU offered to support me for the remainder of my degree (shout out to the admissions department!). It provided a healthy environment to continue my education, conduct research and continue to explore my musical interests."

Bill Moran and Fleet Master Chief April Beldo, May 21, aboard Camp Shields in Okinawa Japan. Moran and Beldo fielded questions and discussed topics such as petty officer advancement, uniform matters and the Enlisted Early Transition Program with the audience and conducted one-on-one question and answer sessions immediately following the event for Sailors with additional concerns. The Church or Monastery of São Vicente de Fora; meaning "Monastery of St. Vincent Outside the Walls" is a 17th century church and monastery in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. It is one of the most important mannerist buildings in the country and also the burial site of most of the Portuguese Kings of the House of Braganza.
The original Monastery of São Vicente de Fora was founded around 1147 by the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, for the Augustinian Order. The Monastery, built in Romanesque style outside the city walls, was one of the most important monastic foundations in mediaeval Portugal. It is dedicated to Saint Vincent of Saragossa, patron saint of Lisbon, whose relics were brought from the Algarve to Lisbon in the 12th century.
The present buildings are the result of a reconstruction ordered by King Philip II of Spain, who had become King of Portugal (as Philip I) after a succession crisis in 1580. The church of the monastery was built between 1582 and 1629, while other monastery buildings were finished only in the 18th century. The author of the design of the church is thought to be the Italian Jesuit Filippo Terzi and/or the Spaniard Juan de Herrera. The plans were followed and modified by Leonardo Turriano, Baltazar Álvares, Pedro Nunes Tinoco and João Nunes Tinoco.
The church of the Monastery has a majestic, austere façade that follows the later Renaissance style known as Mannerism. The façade, attributed to Baltazar Álvares, has several niches with statues of saints and is flanked by two towers (a model that would become widespread in Portugal). The lower part of the façade has three arches that lead to the galilee (entrance hall).
Two questions came to mind after comparing the before and after pictures of the California drought. The first was: Who is responsible? The second question was: How can we respond to this problem no matter who is at fault?
California is no stranger to droughts, but the state has been over-accommodating their own needs for water to keep our main state export businesses alive. The main culprits of drainage of the two man-made lakes is the farming industry, specifically the cattle and nut crops which are taking enormous water reserves to stay alive. Alfalfa (a superfood for cattle) is the biggest water drain, and nuts come second. As with many environmental problems, we tend to shoot, then point, then think, since economic pressure force us into immediate solutions. The water we have stored up (the reservoirs, aquifers) are being depleted at a rapid clip as if they will magically renew. Food prices are bound to soar and/or food sources will have to come from other states sinking California further into debt. The sociological gains could be increased education and awareness of the problem, which is necessary to galvanize people into actively participating in the solution. Hopefully more Americans will begin producing some of their own food and becoming more self-reliant.
These pics make me want to research what causes drought trends, what groups of people are on the forefront of innovation and adaptation to such problems, and how we can support them and participate.

Ship of Fools marks a shift in Wiley’s attention to seascapes and in particular to the collection of works he made for an exhibition at Stephen Friedman Gallery in London in 2017. Each of the seascapes is based on a work in a public collection, reinterpreting, for example, Winslow Homer and JMW Turner, with the white figures in the original paintings replaced by black figures. For Wiley, these figures represent migrants who have set sail in search of better lives. Ship of Fools is the centrepiece of this collection of works. The starting point for the picture is Hieronymus Bosch’s Ship of Fools (1490-1500), now in the Louvre. But while Bosch’s painting is critical of its subjects, Wiley’s raises questions about the risk migrants take to improve their chances of happiness. Royal Museums Greenwich has an important collection of marine paintings and offers a rich context for Ship of Fools. The picture is a post-colonial comment on the genre, questioning many of the assumptions about the glory of imperial might as portrayed in historic holdings. It is the first marine painting by a known black artist to enter the collection and the first work by Wiley to enter a public collection in the UK.

Kehinde Wiley at the National Gallery: The Prelude

Kehinde Wiley is an American artist best known for his portraits that render people of colour in the traditional settings of Old Master paintings. Most famously, in 2017, he was commissioned to paint Barack Obama, becoming the first Black artist to paint an official portrait of a president of the United States. His work makes reference to the canon of European portraiture by positioning contemporary Black sitters, from a range of ethnic and social backgrounds, in the poses of the original historical, religious or mythological figures. His images – as part quotation, part intervention – raise questions about power, privilege, identity, and above all highlight the absence or relegation of Black figures within European art.
In this exhibition, Wiley will shift his focus from one European tradition - Grand Manner portraiture – to another – landscape painting.
Through new artworks, including film and painting, Wiley will look at European Romanticism and its focus on epic scenes of oceans and mountains, building relationships with our collection of historical landscapes and seascapes by Turner, Claude, Vernet and Friedrich.
Like his work before, this new work will look back at Old Masters as a way to create new connections and raise fresh questions.

Either a Comma or Question mark butterfly seen this past Saturday 18 Feb at Broughtons Wildlife Education Center outside Marietta Ohio.
It has been a very warm Winter and this past week had daytime highs in the 60's. The warmer temps have awakened hibernating butterflies like this fellow, (I'm going with Comma).
I cant deny enjoying the warmer temps and having the opportunity to see butterflies like the Mourning Cloak and Comma one to two months early, But I still would feel a little less concerned if Winter would act like Winter is supposed to, LOL.

National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) was established in July, 2001 as a federal statutory body. It is a fast-track initiative to improve social sector outcomes at the grass-roots. The goal of the Commission is to fill the implementation gaps and improve public sector delivery mechanisms to achieve the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) through:
Universal Primary Education (UPE)
Adult Literacy / Gender Empowerment Program
Reducing Population Growth Rate
Improving Infant & Maternal Mortality
Capacity Building at Grassroots
NCHD has been officially declared as lead agency for the spread of literacy programs in the country by the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The 2006 UNESCO International Reading Association Literacy Prize has been awarded to NCHD for its National Literacy Program.
Visit of Mr. Pervaiz Lodhi – Member PHDF
Mr. Pervaiz lodhie a distinguished member of PHDF visited Malala Feeder School on 7th March 2015 alongwith his team and the Worthy Director operations Sindh Humaira Hashimi Sahiba. The team arrived at Malala feeder school at about 12.00noon. A warm welcome was given to the distinguished guests. The students from Malala wrapped in school uniform give a salute the honourable guests and offered flowers to the guests. Thrown rose petals in a queue to the head Masters room.
Where Mr. Moti lal – Head Master briefed the honourable guests about the back ground and the efforts taken for establishment of such a wonderful building through donations. He elaborated that besides donors the I-care, PHDF, Mir Ghulam Ali Talpur and the chairman usher and zakat the children are continuously supporting the school by making donations from their pocket money, which were a unique contribution and the idea for construction of malala feeder school. They started the school with the number of 25 children only but now after hectic efforts and continuous work hard the number has raised to 455. At the movement 5 Feeder teachers are placed while 3 other teachers are voluntarily putting their time and efforts.
Then the guests visited each class room one by one, where two children from each class presented rose flowers to the guests. The guest asked many questions about the education, the attitude of the teachers and their satisfaction from the school and learning land marks. Checked and found whole the school very neat and clean.
A gathering of parents of children was also arranged in the school, after visiting class rooms the honourable guests moved toward the stage where function started with the recitation of holy Quran. A student of class three Ghulam Rasool recited from Holy Quran.
Naat Maqbool (PBHM) was presented by three female students namely Huma Naz, Mehmoona, Nayab and Iqra
Mr. Pervaiz lodhi – member PHDF said in his address that PHDF put a unique idea of public and private partnership and have proved that by collective efforts Pakistan can meet the desired goals and objectives especially in the field of education. He called a meeting with stake holder and the private sector yesterday and will be meet with the honourable minister and PHDF members in Pakistan to contribute on their part in the uplift of NCHD and the objective of Education and literacy in Pakistan. He thinks that it is only NCHD which has office in every district of the Pakistan and grass root approach. He will try a funding and the support of Pakistanis in America and bring some good news as well. He is himself contacting various philanthropists and groups in this regard also. Insha Allah we will bring a positive change in Pakistan and continue our mission. He appreciated the innovative idea for construction of Malala school building. He also suggested that he will show the movie to the father of Malala who is visiting America in coming month.

This Question Mark landed on the terrace to feed off the minerals in the grout, ignoring the lovely salvia and lavender planted just for him and his friends. The Facebook meeting was a smart way for Pawlenty to connect with potential supporters, said David Erickson, director of e-strategy at the Tunheim Partners public relations agency in Bloomington.
"It feels like a gimmick, but it's an attention getter," Erickson said. "Nobody's done it. If he's first, he's getting a lot of attention."

This questions are an attempt to help my students realise that it is okay to ask questions that have no easy answer, so that they can practice saying questions at random to improve their fluency, without having to return to Japanese to check out their question to see that it has a viable answer. I tried it in my seminar class. Immediately afterwards one of my students was still censoring questions and having difficulty asking questions that might be difficult for me to answer (How often mustn't you praise?). The truth is for a native speaker almost any question is answerable, and this was just after getting them to do the above exercise to have them realise that it does not matter if the question is unanswerable. So the wall of politeness, which may be the same as of meaning, is hard to break.
Meaning is felt to occur when you understand yourself, and ask yourself a question, say or express something that you can auto-respond to and understand.

Polygonia interrogationis -- summer form
The summer form of the Question Mark has dark hind wings and usually seem to be beat up before you find them. This one is almost perfect and I was quite happy when it landed for a couple seconds on the edge of the bike path in a forested area. Too bad I only captured one photo before it was gone.
