I designed this using the Super Mario Bros All-Stars block sprites. It's just a small box, but I think it's really cute. It's glued together with a hot glue gun, and looks cleaner than boxes made by interlocking the edges.

Dr. Lynn Rothschild has spent her career asking one of the most profound questions in science: what is life, and where else might it exist? As an astrobiologist at NASA’s Ames Research Center, she studies the limits of life on Earth to better understand its potential beyond our planet. Her work brings together microbiology, synthetic biology, and evolutionary biology in a search for universal principles that govern living systems.

Rothschild’s curiosity extends from Earth’s most extreme environments to the design of life itself. She studies organisms that thrive in high radiation, intense heat, or toxic chemistry, using them as models for what might survive on Mars or Europa. At the same time, she is pioneering the use of synthetic biology to enable space exploration. By programming microbes to make materials, medicines, and fuels, she envisions future missions that “grow” what they need instead of carrying it from Earth. This vision is practical as well as poetic, turning biology into a new kind of engineering.

Educated at Yale, Indiana University, and Brown, Rothschild has combined the rigor of science with the wonder of exploration. At NASA Ames, she founded the Synthetic Biology Initiative, leading interdisciplinary teams that blend the creativity of design with the precision of genetics. She has advised space missions, mentored generations of researchers, and worked closely with engineers, designers, and artists to imagine living technologies that could transform both space and Earth.

Rothschild’s influence reaches beyond the lab. She is a frequent speaker at scientific and cultural institutions, including The Long Now Foundation, where she challenges audiences to think about life across cosmic timescales. Her work invites us to see biology not only as the study of life as it is, but as a toolkit for life as it could be.

Whether exploring extremophile microbes in volcanic lakes or programming DNA to create sustainable materials, Rothschild embodies the idea that science is both discovery and invention. Her optimism about life’s resilience and adaptability offers a hopeful counterpoint to the fragility of our own biosphere. In her view, life is a restless experiment, and humanity’s next frontier lies in learning how to live wisely, both on this planet and beyond.

A passerby (Captain Esa Nenonen) questions a kettle guard officer (Captain Saga Lippo) in the performance of the Finnish Salvation Army musical "Love Looks Forward", 8 November 2014, at the Temple Hall in Helsinki.

A photographic answer to a friend's question. The sword in this case is just a prop, the hat is the answer. My mother made this for me perhaps 25 years or so ago. I was seriously into Dungeons & Dragons at the time, so for Christmas one year I asked her to crochet a viking helmet for me. It is one of my most treasured possessions, especially now that my mother has passed on.

Melancolies questions the possibility of resistance against mythologies of the body which build our identities today.

These self-portraits have been (re)created with the help of digital manipulation. By substituting my features for those of top models in women’s magazines, I (re)create figures with transient identities, inscribed in a hesitant reality.

Taking such action is a product of pure instinct, of immediate, unthinking admiration for those perfect faces, irresistibly western, fashioned and modelled by successive norms orchestrated by the media. I project indications of those prefabricated genders to on my own face, thus fulfilling the fantasy of any advertising executive and finally completing the infinite power of the brand.

This series is composed of two parts which permit me to explore the mechanics of sexual differentiation operated by these standardised images. Firstly, the impeccably made-up lips and eyes, accessory smiles (and other pre-set expressions) reveal the image of a subdued and available woman, reified into a seductive icon.

Secondly, there is the manly geometry of faces, the dark looks and the affirmed head-on confrontation of bodies which define myths of an exaggerated masculinity and put the man back in his patriarchal role of protector.

Before the heavy frost the flower spires were exclamation marks, now they are question marks.

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill listened to ideas and concerns, and answered questions from Missourians today at a public town hall meeting in Hannibal—one of eight public town halls she is holding across the Show-Me state this week.

McCaskill has hosted public town hall meetings in Missouri throughout her time in the U.S. Senate.

“One of the most important parts of my job is listening to Missourians about their ideas and concerns, getting their input, and holding myself accountable face-to-face,” said McCaskill, who grew up in rural Missouri. “I wanted the folks at today’s town hall, and across the state, to know that the people they elected to represent them truly hear them, and stand ready to take their ideas to Washington on how to combat the scourge of sex trafficking, ensure access to affordable health care, and prevent drastic budget cuts—including those that would impact the very building we were in today.”

McCaskill is hosting eight public town halls this week in Buchanan County, Callaway County, Greene County, Jefferson County, Marion County, New Madrid County, Phelps County, and Platte County.

Public town halls with Missourians have been a hallmark of McCaskill’s time in the Senate, including tours across the state. During debate over the Affordable Care Act—at a time of heightened demonstrations against the law—McCaskill held a series of highly publicized town halls, including in traditionally conservative areas of Missouri, to hear directly from Missourians about their concerns and respond to criticisms. In 2014, McCaskill logged more than 1,000 miles around the state on her “McCaskill on Main Street” series of public town halls.

McCaskill has also toured the state with town halls aimed at military veterans and seniors—and has hosted individual town halls, such as one she hosted last year with then-U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack focused on the opioid epidemic.

The Misericórdia Church of Santarém was built in the late Renaissance (1559), according to the Hall-Church style.

The style of this church makes it aesthetically similar to others like the Santo Antão Church in Évora, the Se-Catherdrals of Miranda, Leiria, Portalegre and even Goa, in India.

With three naves, the dome is sustained by strong Tuscan columns which were decorated with gold paintings in 1630.

But in 1755, the cataclysmic earthquake that struck southern Portugal (particularly Lisbon) damaged the facade heavily. It was then decided to rebuild the facade according to the Baroque Rococo style of the epoch.

According to specialists this church is an excellent example of the late renaissance and Mannerist style in terms of harmonious proportion and conjugation of classical elements, like the columns, and medieval aesthetic and perfect in terms of architecture.
