Very large calcite plates have left impressions in the quartz. Some of the calcite is still there in thin layers. Maratoto Valley.

Quartz is an abundant mineral in the Earth's continental crust. It is made up of a continuous framework of SiO4 silicon–oxygen tetrahedra, with each oxygen being shared between two tetrahedra, giving an overall formula SiO2. There are many different varieties of quartz, several of which are semi-precious gemstones. Throughout the world, varieties of quartz have been, since antiquity, the most commonly used minerals in the making of jewelry and hardstone carvings.
A mineral is a naturally-occurring, solid, inorganic, crystalline substance having a fairly definite chemical composition and having fairly definite physical properties. At its simplest, a mineral is a naturally-occurring solid chemical. Currently, there are over 5600 named and described minerals - about 200 of them are common and about 20 of them are very common. Mineral classification is based on anion chemistry. Major categories of minerals are: elements, sulfides, oxides, halides, carbonates, sulfates, phosphates, and silicates.
The silicates are the most abundant and chemically complex group of minerals. All silicates have silica as the basis for their chemistry. "Silica" refers to SiO2 chemistry. The fundamental molecular unit of silica is one small silicon atom surrounded by four large oxygen atoms in the shape of a triangular pyramid - this is the silica tetrahedron - SiO4. Each oxygen atom is shared by two silicon atoms, so only half of the four oxygens "belong" to each silicon. The resulting formula for silica is thus SiO2, not SiO4.
The simplest & most abundant silicate mineral in the Earth's crust is quartz (SiO2). All other silicates have silica + impurities. Many silicates have a significant percentage of aluminum (the aluminosilicates).
Quartz (silicon dioxide/silica - SiO2) is the most common mineral in the Earth's crust. It is composed of the two most abundant elements in the crust - oxygen and silicon. It has a glassy, nonmetallic luster, is commonly clearish to whitish to grayish in color, has a white streak, is quite hard (H≡7), forms hexagonal crystals, has no cleavage, and has conchoidal fracture. Quartz can be any color: clear, white, gray, black, brown, pink, red, purple, blue, green, orange, etc.
The quartz seen here is an unbroken crystal.
Mineral County. View of Quartz Creek along the Quartz-Rivulet road, south of the Quartz community. Quartz was so named because of its proximity to a large quartz mine. Once a station on the Northern Pacific, a post office was first established at Quartz as early as 1871 (April 13). George Sandy served as the first postmaster. The post office was originally known as Quartz Creek, but the name was shortened to Quartz in 1882 (October 16). The post office closed in 1916 (November 15).

These are called Smoky Bear Quartz because they come from the same area that Smokey Bear was orphaned in a forest fire.
The hill that we climb to get here is very very steep. It is pretty much a 2 day climb. The weather at the top is only good between June 1 and September 1. Good is a liberal term as late afternoon lightning storms with hail are common. The forest service only allows surface collecting with no tools. When we go we stay a couple of days and that requires primitive camping but John does make a great campfire pizza.

I lit this remarkable quartz from behind using a speedlite, to bring out the inner structure of the crystal. I also had two strobes at 45 degrees each, set just to fill in the front detail. I didn't expose the background as much in this shot, to allow the glow from the crystal to dominate. Any comments on this image are very welcome!

Graphic granite, also known as runic granite or runite, has an odd but distinctive type of crystalline texture. Graphic granites are typically bimineralic and consist of interpenetrating crystals of quartz and potassium feldspar. The resulting texture somewhat resembles ancient writing (“graphic”). Observed examples resemble Cuneiform, Hebrew, or Arabic writing. These rocks occur in pegmatitic granite intrusions.

Clear Quartz is known as the "master healer" and will amplify energy and thought, as well as the effect of other crystals. It absorbs, stores, releases and regulates energy. Clear Quartz draws off negative energy of all kinds, neutralising background radiation, including electromagnetic smog or petrochemical emanations. It balances and revitalises the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual planes. It acts as a deep soul cleanser, connecting the physical dimension with the mind. It enhances psychic abilities. It aids concentration and unlocks memory. Stimulates the immune system and brings the body into balance. Clear Quartz harmonises all the chakras and aligns the subtle bodies.

Graphic Granite is an intergrowth of quartz (dark gray crystals) with feldspar, most commonly the feldspar microcline as in this specimen. The dark quartz crystals are actually elongate crystals and are somewhat interconnected within the feldspar host. Graphic granites are almost exclusively found with granitic pegmatites.
The term "Graphic" refers to the cuneiform style of the wedge-shaped characters used in the ancient writing systems of Mesopotamia.
After about a century of debate on the formation of graphic granite, the current consensus among petrologists is that the growth was simultaneous. That is, the crystal grew from the liquid mass at about the same time, as oppose to another theory that the quartz replaced feldspar after the solidification of the rock. The former is supported by observations of consistency of the ratio of quartz to feldspar in graphic granite (typically 1:3) and the manner in which the feldspar crystal network controls the position and growth of the quartz.
