Agate is a fine-grained variety of quartz known as chalcedony that shows concentric color banding. The colors in this agate are caused by microscopic inclusions of iron oxide minerals in the quartz. Agates are commonly found in cavities in volcanic rock, where silica-rich water deposited quartz crystals layer by layer parallel to the cavity wall.

Brazil is the major commercial source of agate.

Quartz var. Smoky. Scepter with a penetrator and wall rock from the lining of a pocket. These unusual scepters develop when a new crystal grows on top of an older crystal during a later period of rapid mineral growth. They occur in pockets found in a fractured and weathered Cretaceous granodiorite. The bulb on this scepter is 8 cm tall and 5 cm wide. Specimen was extracted from the cavity in seven pieces an had to be reassembled. Hallelujah Claim. Petersen Mountain. Washoe Co., Nevada

The Wallingford-Back Mine, located sixty miles northwest of Ottawa, was once the largest in North America. Before being abandoned in 1972, it specialized in a variety of minerals, especially feldspar and quartz.

In the dead of winter, when the Canadian temperature drops below zero, the creek water that’s filled the grotto for four decades freezes, creating a solid surface of ice. Recently, locals have reenergized the forgotten cavern with weekend pick up games.

Rocks protrude from the crystalline surface, and the players dodge occasional falling icicles. The sounds of slapped pucks and hockey sticks travel in echoes through the stone cathedral, games played in beautiful isolation.

This is a close up of where a cluster of crystals has been broken off (this sample usually lives outside in my rock garden) and it shows the formation of the crystals out from the centre.

A rock at the side of the path leading to the summit of Mount Keen reveals the sparkling quartz crystals, some of which have been discoloured a reddy-brown. Anyway, stop dallying, we've got more climbing to do!!

Mount Keen is my 11th Munro and this is my second time of climbing it. It is the most easterly of all the Munros and stands at 939 Meters (3080 feet), forming an almost perfect cone. A 7 mile cycle up Glen Tanar gets us to the foot of the 2 mile ascent up the mountain.

I'm not a geologist, but I found these white veins in Sierra granite that I think are quartz. Seen at about 8,100' near Carson Pass.

My visit to this site has been somewhat disappointing. The road was blocked off, with park guides guarding the path. The abandoned mine near Buckingham has been fenced off. Lots of quartz on the paths around but really no opportunities to explore the flooded mine.

I stumbled upon a photo on Flickr by www.stuckincustoms.com and was so moved by the photo. It is amazing! The photo reminds me that even after the worse storm, a beautiful calm and peace will exist.

So, whether you're weathering a storm or just having a bad day, remember that there's an end in sight and things always have a way of working out for the best.

These earrings are made out of 14/20 gold filled wires and formed into a marquis shape. Fine guage gold filled wires were wirewrapped over the form and Mystic Blue Quartz rondelles were added to the interior. On the bottom, is a lush cluster of more Blue Quartz rondelles and tiny Gray Blue freshwater pearls. At the very bottom is a large Blue Quartz heart briolette.

The earrings measure 1/2 inch wide and 2 inches high (from the top of the earwires to the bottom of the cluster).

I collected some amazing stones from Lake Tahoe, California a few years ago, and have dreamed of producing some amazing artwork with them. A lamp. Something... This photo could be the end of the line for this lazy soul.... But, translucent as they are (especially when wet), they are so cool!

I'm not used to post mineral photos on my flickr account, for this sort of photos I prefere to use my mindat profile

( www.mindat.org/gallery-48279.html ) but I really love this one. I think it is one of my best mineral shot I've taken until now so I'd like to share it with all of you.

Taking photos to complicated objects as minerals in a studio is a true challenge for a photographer, especially when they're very transparent and gemmy as this one.

You have to play with the artificial lights to get the reflections you want on the crystal faces but being careful to dull the lights so you don't get too strong reflections.

You also have to master the focus stacking technique sometimes taking more than 50 photos in a row to the same crystal!

In the end, at least for my experience, you have to play with Photoshop to make a nice background and a realistic reflection which is a huge part of the job, sometimes taking hours and hours of work.

And some other crystals in the background.

Quartz crystals are my favorites.
