Mystery on Quartz Mountain.
Year: 196?
Style: Midcentury Modern / Contemporary
This home, built in the early 60s, perfectly illustrates the breezy lifestyle associated with a home in the foothills of Paradise Valley. The deep setback, dramatic siting with perfectly framed views of surrounding mountains and clean, low lines are all hallmarks of desert architecture from this era. The kitchen area virtually floats above the entryway and a massive curved hearth serves the core of the home. The kitchen, dressing room and master bath have been recently remodeled. It is possible that beneath the stucco lies the work of one of Phoenix’s Founding Fathers of Modernism .Of those that voted, an overwhelming majority thought this was the work of the Talisein Fellowship.

This specimen is an exceptionally lustrous carved egg of Quartz, colored a deep red by the Hematite inclusions inside the main crystals. Weighing over four pounds and reaching nearly 6 inches (15 cm) in height,
A geode (cavity) lined with crystals of one of the commonest minerals of all, quartz. This mineral is a lattice of silicon and oxygen, called silica (not to be confused with silicone, which is something else entirely). Quartz is usually found as white veins running through rocks and, when weathered out, as milky white pebbles and sand grains. It is incredibly tough and enduring, hence its ubiquity. All these 'versions' consist of cryptocrystalline silica, a cemented mush of tiny crystals but quartz sometimes grows into hexagonal crystals, within rock cavities, like the crystal shown here. Although these crystals can be double terminated (i.e. a point at either end) most grow out of rock walls and only have one point. Thus, many double terminated specimens in shops have been altered with a grinder. Quartz can vary in colour, due to impurities but this one is the pure variety called rock crystal. Also present in this specimen is a black crystal of tourmaline and smaller cream coloured crystals of calcite. More about these minerals later.
