Small but ultra-clear crystals. Very hard to photograph because they are so clear. About 3-4mm long. Waitawheta River, Karangahake Gorge.
I continue to be amazed at just how many 200'+ tall waterfalls there are out there that remain unknown. This one is less than 1/4 of a mile from one of the major east-west highways in the state. Of course you have to climb 600 vertical feet and then back down another 150 to get there so it's not easy.
The small creek that contains this waterfall has a really pretty lower falls located right next to Highway 20 called Cascade Crest Falls (at least unofficially). That waterfall is fairly well known and often photographed. Less than 1000' upstream is this beautiful waterfall. This peek-a-boo view shows most of the 128' tall upper tier of the falls. Below this is a series of cascades and then another beautiful 55' tall waterfall. Then entire waterfall stands 232' tall and is located in a very impressive canyon for such a small creek. At the base of the waterfall, a rock slide has dumped a large amount of rocks and boulders. Among these boulders were some really nicely formed pieces of quartz. Some of these pieces were the size of my smallish dog. Because of all that lovely crystal, I named the waterfall Quartz Canyon Falls.
On my trip into the waterfall, the sun was directly overhead when I was standing at the base, making photographing the falls from the bottom nearly impossible. On my way back out, I happened to notice this great view of the upper tier and took a few pictures.

Fossil wood (quartz permineralized fossil wood) (15.5 cm across)
Plants are multicellular, photosynthetic eucaryotes. The oldest known land plant body fossils are Silurian in age. Fossil root traces of land plants are known back in the Ordovician. The Devonian was the key time interval during which land plants flourished and Earth experienced its first “greening” of the land. The earliest land plants were small and simple and probably remained close to bodies of water. By the Late Devonian, land plants had evolved large, tree-sized bodies and the first-ever forests appeared.
The fossil shown above is "petrified wood", which is a horrible term for what is technically called permineralization. Biogenic materials such as wood or bone have a fair amount of small-scale porosity. After burial, the porosity of wood or bone can get partially or completely filled up with minerals as groundwater or diagenetic fluids percolate through. The end result is a harder, denser material that retains the original three-dimensionality (or close to it). The wood or bone has become “petrified”. Well, no - it’s become permineralized. Not surprisingly, the most common permineralization mineral is quartz (SiO2). Sometimes, fossil wood and bone have been permineralized with radioactive minerals such as black uraninite (UO2) or yellowish carnotite (K2(UO2)2(VO4)2·3H2O). Recently, fossil bones permineralized with cinnabar have been identified (García-Alix et al., 2013, Lethaia 46: 1-6).

Painting acrylic on canvas, size 50+50 cm,2018.Rose quartz is a mineral stone, with a beautiful color and interesting texture, I love mineral stones.
Definitely irradiated to create the smoky color. Still, a very unusual grouping or quartz crystals, not like most of what you see from Arkansas. This is a large cabinet specimen, about 6" across.
Diameter: 10.9 inches (27.7 cm)
