The Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht was commissioned by Ms Truus Schröder-Schräder, designed by the architect Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, and built in 1924. This small family house, with its interior, the flexible spatial arrangement, and the visual and formal qualities, was a manifesto of the ideals of the De Stijl group of artists and architects in the Netherlands in the 1920s, and has since been considered one of the icons of the Modern Movement in architecture.

Spending time with friends while sitting on Liberty bridge enjoying the sunset over Budapest became a thing during the past couple of years.

It is commonly known as the Twin Cities after the area's two largest cities, Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
It's maybe not very good quality photo, 'cos there was very dark inside, but I'd like to show you our path in the Mahorčič Cave, along the Reka river. We were there after visiting the Škocjan Caves and little walk along the Big Collapse Doline :)
The Mahorčič Cave (Mahorčičeva Jama) was named after a local explorer Josef Mahorčič who was also the mayor of Naklo. The cave sits directly below the Škocjan village, after which the entire cave system got its name and is also where the Reka River flows underground. The sunlight streaming into the cave makes for an absolutely scenic shot.
The Reka river is the widest known sinking stream of the Classical Karst area in Slovenia, and it has been studied since the Antiquity. This river formed the Škocjan Caves, long limestone cave system which comprises one of the world's largest known underground river canyons, which was proclaimed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1986.

Jaskinia Mahorčiča (Mahorčičeva Jama) została nazwana na cześć lokalnego odkrywcy i burmistrza miasta Naklo Josefa Mahorčič. Jaskinia znajduje się bezpośrednio pod wioską Škocjan, od której cały system jaskiń wziął swoją nazwę i jest miejscem, gdzie rzeka Reka wpływa do pod ziemię. Światło słoneczne wpadające do jaskini tworzy malownicze widoki.
Rzeka Reka jest najszerszym znanym ciekiem wodnym w obszarze Krasu Klasycznego w Słowenii i jest badana od czasów starożytnych. Rzeka ta utworzyła Jaskinie Škocjan, długi system jaskiń wapiennych, który obejmuje jeden z największych znanych na świecie podziemnych kanionów rzecznych, który został wpisany na Listę Światowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO w 1986 roku.

Trailing the GE was SD60M 5557 and SD40-2 6487 on that chilly afternoon back in 1994.
On our last day in Iceland we toured the Golden Circle, the inland route of Iceland closed to Reykjavik. One stop was Geysir, a geyser that ejects boiling water up to 70 m (230 ft) every 4-10 min. You can safely get very close to the geyser. The boy in the middle was startled, and stepped away moments later. The name Geysir is derived from the Icelandic verb geysa, which means "to gush".

I took a day off for a road trip in the Swiss Alps and nearby Südtirol in Italy. After passing over the Flüelapass I stopped at a small village called Giarsun, located in the lower part of the Engadin valley near Austria. I talked to the owner of an ancient house, who graciously gave me a tour of his traditional Engadin stone house. He mentioned that part of a Schellen-Ursli children story was filmed in his house. This is the entrance.
I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, desaturated the image, and added a yellow tone for an old look. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

A freshly painted Conrail Quality heritage unit leads CSX M421 south on the Trenton Subdivision at Manville, NJ. CSX gets a participation trophy for this project. I can appreciate the concept behind this series of heritage paint schemes, but as applied it's just not visually appealing to me. At all.

Last year we celebrated birthday of my mom with a dinner in the historical Sargans Castle, located at the foothills of the Swiss Alps. We had the 500 year old castle all to ourselves for the evening. We explored the 500 year old castle before dinner - this is the entrance hall.

Wandering along Quality Row is like time-travelling back to 1844, when Norfolk Island had one of the harshest penal colonies in Australia. While the unlucky prisoners of the era were confined to much bleaker quarters, the foreman of local building works, and other civil and military officials, as well as the clergyman, got to live in these comfortable houses. This area, Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area (KAVHA), including the large Commissariat Store, together with the prison remains (far background) is one part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Australian Convict Sites.

The precinct's picturesque character, historic associations, outstanding Georgian buildings and townscape, and evocative ruins make it a place to remember! It is significant for its association with four distinct settlement periods in one place: the pre-European Polynesian Settlement; the British Colonial and Penal Settlements during the convict era (1788–1814, 1825–1855); and the current Pitcairn Settlement (1856–present).
Several of Marg's ancestors lived here during the first penal settlement from 1788 to 1803! And that makes it a truly special place in our minds.

Before the Covid lockdown I joined a Zen meditation class at Hakone Gardens, a beautiful Japanese garden in Saratoga, California. I took this photo at the lower house with a 210° angle fisheye lens. With this lens it is quite challenging to not get your feed, head and tripod into the picture! I thought these barrels were used to store miso in the old times. Later I found out that these were likely used to store 黒酢 (kurozu), black rice vinegar.
