Applecross is the name for the whole peninsula and the community is made up of various crofting townships. Applecross itself is home to just a couple of hundred people and accessed by only two roads, the Bealach pass road we used reaches 2053 feet called the Bealach na Ba, the Gaelic name for the area, ‘a Chomraich’, means ‘The Sanctuary’.
Applecross is a corruption of Aber Crossan, meaning mouth of the River Crossan.

Rolling out of the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1910, T,H&B Locomotive 103 is a 2-8-0 Consolidation locomotive that operated mainly as a freight hauler between Hamilton and Welland. In its fourty-four years of service it never had an accident. Retired in 1954 it lived in Hamilton's Gage Park from 1956-1977 when it was moved to its current home at Westfield Heritage Village.

If I had to pick a region of Ohio for making pictures, it would be Southern OH! It's home to dozens of private and public nature preserves, one of my favorites is Lake Katharine in Jackson County. With nearly 10 miles of trails winding through the Eastern Hemlock forest, visitors are also treated to a lovely view of the park's namesake, Lake Katharine.

After my first trip to Hocking Hills last April, there have been an additional 4 trips made, and it's all due to the scenery!
Continuing in trail order moving upstream, what you're seeing now are the Middle Falls on the Hocking Hills Old Man's Cave trail. While the smallest and easiest to walk though falls of the trail, Middle Falls were my favorite because I knew when framing up the shot that the softly back-lit early morning light was going to produce some silvery water and rocks.
This image was not made as the same trip to Lower Falls, so no DR5 Chrome version of this one. :(

I'm re-evaluating Kodak Tri-X 400 (120 format) when paired with Pyrocat HD, so I am looking for an optimal speed setting for this combination.
Negatives exposed at 400ASA exactly were less than optimal: too little shadow information retained. An extra half stop exposure helped a lot, but there was still minimal information in the shadows (this would have been difficult to print in the darkroom). The first exposure I consider ideal (good for scanning and optical printing) was a full stop over box speed: 200 ASA. (This image) Another half stop over that also gave a very good, totally usable negative.
I went as far as 2.5 stops OVER box speed and got a usable negative, but the mid-tones were getting flat and the highest values had less separation. It was possible, however, to make a good finished image from that "2.5 over" negative. See: flic.kr/p/2qZYixr

A sight common to many who've visited Hocking Hills, the Upper Falls are the main attraction on the trail I've been photographing each time I visit. There's a lovely old bridge that crosses these coursing falls, and even in the "off season", manages to move a healthy amount of water.
My favorite part of the Upper Falls isn't the falls themselves, but the serene, shallow pond that the falls run into. In this particularly wide view, I tried my best with a combination of long exposure and front tilt to demonstrate both aspects of the falls.
