We used Santa Ana as a base for two day-trips. The first was to Chalchuapa, 30 minutes to the west via bus #218. Chalchuapa is very tranqillo. We gazed at the Mayan ruins at the edge of town, then trekked to centro to the parques, mercado, and church.

Pyramid ants are pale orange to dark brown in color. They are slender with a pyramid-shaped projection on its thorax.

Size:

Range from 1/12-inch to 1/6-inch in length.

Behavior:

Pyramid ants move quickly and forage in strong, easily detected trails. They are similar to fire ants in that often nest in open, sunny areas, and are rarely found indoors. They can also be found around patios, porches and decks. They feed on other insects and honeydew, and are particularly fond of sweets.

Habitat:

Pyramid ant colonies tend to be small with a single queen. Workers construct the nest in open, sandy areas, where they deposit soil in a circular crater or mound around the entrance hole. Mounds are usually 2 to 4 inches in diameter are easily spotted around pavers and logs and are often found near the nests of other ants.

Unique Characteristics:

One of the primary benefits of the Pyramid ant is their role as natural predators of other undesirable ants, especially fire ants. It is common to actually see this species attacking individual foraging fire ants and newly-mated fire ant queens. Close observation of their nests will often reveal “bone piles”, containing the remains of fire ants and other ant species.

The Great Pyramid of Giza , also called Khufu's Pyramid or the Pyramid of Khufu, and Pyramid of Cheops, is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis, and is the only remaining member of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for Fourth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh Khufu (Cheops in Greek) and constructed over a 20 year period concluding around 2560 BC.

This is the pyramid of Khafre. It still has some of its caprock on top. It appears taller than the Great Pyramid, because it is on higher ground.

A series of user-controlled 360 panoramas of the Pyramids at Giza at various points within the necropolis.

For those of you with slow internet connections, I suggest you move on. This panorama series requires quite a bit of bandwidth. After the initial panorama loads, you'll see several clickable points within the pyramids complex. Clicking on any point delivers you to the panorama taken from that point's perspective. There are 5 linked panoramas within this series which should do quite a good job eating up your processor cycles (it is Adobe Flash, after all), RAM, and free time.

This is the last of the pyramids complex from Egypt but I hope for those that are unable to ever reach Egypt in person, this panorama set does a good job of putting the pyramids into a bit of perspective.

Pyramids near Karima in Northern Sudan silhoutted against the setting sun. These pyramids were built in the 8th Century BCE near the temple known as Jebel Barkal that was built in the 15th Centruy BC by the Egyptian and dedicated to the god Amun.

This pyramid is interesting because it was built to have a flat surface, which is visible at the top. Below that, people took the surface stones for their own uses, so the individual stones are visible.
