Under the step pyramid of Djoser is a labyrinth of tunnelled chambers and galleries that total nearly 6 km in length and connect to a central shaft 7 m square and 28 m deep. These spaces provide room for the king's burial, the burial of family members, and the storage of goods and offerings. The entrance to the 28 m shaft was built on the north side of the pyramid, a trend that would remain throughout the Old Kingdom.

This easter one of my dreams came true. I went to Egypt and saw these amazing pyramids in Giza. Since I was a little girl I have always been fascinated about the ancient history in Egypt. And it may be what started my interest in archaeology, which ended in me being an archaeologist.
I was prepared that this would be an amazing experience, and it really was... I was struck how big they were, even though I have read books and seen pictures and knew all about how big they are. I even went inside one of the pyramids called Khufu.
In case anyone that has been following me on Twitter was wondering what the heck I have been talking about when I referenced some old slides I had found, here is one of them.
Taken on my very first SLR, a Nikon N4004s with the 35-70mm kit lens, during a short cruise that I took down to Egypt in October 1992. This is one of the smaller pyramids at Giza which is outside of Cairo (which you can kind of see in the background).

Sunrise on Pyramid Rock in the Porcupine Gorge. At 6am my wife and I headed down into the gorge. 1/3rd of the way down I realised why my pack was so light: 1 torch, 1 tripod, 2 batteries, 2 lenses..... no camera! A little more exercise than planned and off we went again.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza pyramid complex bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact

Earlier this year I flew to the Basque Country to visit my family. Watching the flight map monitors I noticed we were flying directly over the Nile and thought "I wonder if..." and low and behold there they were, the Great Pyramids basking in the morning Sun. The blinds went up all the way, people were sleeping, I didn't care I just started snapping away whilst being completely awe struck! Meanwhile I'm still to set foot on Egypt.
An offhand insult on an internet messageboard has spiralled my budding paranoia into full-blown depression.
Yeah, I know I shouldn't care, but sometimes it really does build up - especially when you fear it may be *true*.
