The metro is operated manually. On each platform, a conductor watches the crowds and authorizes the operator to leave the station.

Pyongyang's air is normally polluted like this, though it was much cleaner on the May Day holiday, perhaps because fewer factory chimneys were pumping out their usual fumes.
Before 2010 tourists were only allowed to travel between two stations, sparking a conspiracy theory that the two stations comprised the entire system. I am happy to tell you that the metro is very much real.
