Arrival and the first of many sightings of Kim.

In September 2016 I visited North Korea (or Democratic People's Republic of Korea as locals call it).

One of the most ornate stations in the system, and therefore a frequent stop on visitors' itineraries, this station is located next to the Koryo Hotel. Most visitors terminate there, very few are being allowed to ride any further, most likely because the other stations are far less stunning.

Pyongyang, DPRK.

This picture, as well as the previous one in the stream, were taken a block away from Kim Il Sung Square, near the foreign publishings bookstore. The vast, austere green building reveals a large courtyard... The picture is intriguing, I would love to know what is going on in this shack.

This impressive structure houses some very expensive gifts presented to former leader Kim Il-sung and the current leader Kim Jong-il from various foreign dignitaries.

Built in a traditional style, the halls opened on August 26, 1978 and consist of over 150 rooms covering a total area of between 28,000 and 70,000 square meters.[1] The building offers the impression that it has windows, though it has none. According to one legend, Kim Jong-il built the International Friendship Exhibition in three days, however actual construction took a year. Currently, estimates of how many gifts the exhibition holds vary between 60,000[6] and 220,000 gifts. On entering the exhibition, shoes must be discarded and visitors are asked to bow before portraits of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il.

The main gate seen is made from bronze and I had the fortune of opening it myself (was given a glove before I could touch the shiny handle!).

Had our own tram, shots of the depot and our ride for the morning.

Erected in 1946 "to commemorate the exploits performed by the Soviet army who helped (!) the Korean people with blood in the battle for the liberation of Korea", as the book "Pyongyang review" puts it. Rebuilt in 1985.

The Kaeson station is rarely seen by foreigners. For many years, only the Puhŭng and Yŏnggwang station were accessible to tours, on a showcase ride of the Metro system, leading to speculation that no other station actually existed. This rumor is obviously false, and select visitors have lately been granted broader access to the system.

As it turns out, most stations, while spotless and in a state of good repair, are far more utilitarian than the two showcase stations, which might be the basic reasons while they used to be inaccessible.
