Have a great day, hugs, Karin

The Postcard

A postcard that was published by R. I. Severs of 10, King's Parade, Cambridge. It was posted in Cambridge using a ½d. stamp on Friday the 14th. June 1912. The card was sent to:

Geo. W. Wallace Esq.,

7, Inverleith Row,

Edinburgh.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"King's College

Cambridge.

Friday.

Did well enough in

maths today; algebra

& arithmetic a little

stiffer than I expected.

Got the dictionary

all right.

Went for a paddle on

the river after tea.

Hot day.

Yours,

Willie."

-- George Walker Wallace

The recipient of the card, George Walker Wallace was born at home in Edinburgh on the 6th. May 1896. He lived in Edinburgh or nearby (North Berwick) his entire life, apart from his army service. Before the Great War George managed the family-owned Holyrood Laundry.

George joined the Tank Corps in the Great War and was wounded at Ypres. George's tank caught fire, and George was the only one to get out, although badly burned. He required cream to be applied for many years.

George survived the Great War and married in 1944, producing four children. He died at 3a Lonsdale Terrace in Edinburgh on the 24th. October 1949.

Cancer Credulity and Quackery

So what else happened on the day that Willie posted the card?

Well, on the 14th. June 1912, Dr. Robert Bell won his libel lawsuit against Dr. Henry Howarth Bashford, who had criticized his cancer treatment in the British Medical Journal, in the article "Cancer Credulity and Quackery."

Dr. Bell brought the testimony of Drs. Paul Ehrlich and August von Wassermann, who testified that:

"Cancer can be cured in mice by injecting

into the blood stream a specific compound

of selenium and eosin."

Peggy Ann Wood

The 14th. June 1912 also marked the birth in Chiswick, London of Peggy Ann Wood.

Peggy Ann Wood was a British actress, director and theatre manager associated heavily with the Bristol Old Vic.

In partnership with her husband, Ronald Russell (1910 – 1994), she ran the repertory company the Rapier Players, based in Bristol's Colston Hall.

During WWII, Peggy ran the theatre whilst Ronnie served in the Police War Reserves, and once the Prince's Theatre had been bombed in November 1940, the Rapier Players provided the only live theatre in the city of Bristol.

The contribution of Ronnie Russell and Peggy Ann Wood to the theatrical heritage of Bristol was commemorated with a Blue Plaque Ceremony in July 2002. The plaque is situated on the outside of Colston Hall.

-- Peggy Ann Wood's Personal Life and Death

Peggy was the daughter of the composer and conductor Arthur Wood. She studied at St Paul's School.

In 1931, while performing in repertory at Rochester, she met her future husband Russell. They married in 1937, and remained together for 57 years, until his death in 1994.

Peggy died four years later in Northwood, London at the age of 85 on the 30th. May 1998.

The Postcard

A Living Picture Series postcard that was published by H. G. L. The card was posted in Borough Green using a ½d. stamp on Monday the 26th. March 1906 to:

Miss Hollands,

High Street,

Boro Green.

The peremptory message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Meet me alone in

Basted Lane Tuesday

night 8.15.

W.

Be sure you come."

Rafael Méndez

So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?

Well, the 26th. March 1906 marked the birth of Rafael Méndez. Rafael was a Mexican virtuoso solo trumpeter. He is known as the "Heifetz of the Trumpet."

Rafael Méndez - the Early Years

Méndez was born in Jiquilpan, Michoacán, Mexico to a musical family. As a child, he performed as a cornetist for guerrilla leader Pancho Villa, becoming a favorite musician of his, and required to remain with Villa's camp.

Méndez emigrated to the US when he was 20, first settling in Gary, Indiana where he worked in steel mills. He then moved to Flint, Michigan and worked at a Buick automotive plant while he established his musical career.

Rafael Méndez's Musical Career

In 1939, Mendez joined the MGM studio orchestra where he played on several movie soundtracks and performed regular live concerts

By 1940, he was in Hollywood leading the brass section of MGM's orchestra.

He contributed to a number of films, including Flying Down to Rio and Hondo and from 1950 to 1975, Méndez was a full-time soloist. At his peak, he performed about 125 concerts per year, and he was also very active as a recording artist.

Méndez was highly acclaimed for his range, technique and unparalleled double-tonguing. His playing was also characterized by a brilliant tone, wide vibrato and clean, rapid articulation.

Rafael's repertoire was a mixture of classical, popular, jazz, and Mexican folk music. He contributed many arrangements and original compositions to the trumpet repertoire. His Scherzo in D minor is often heard in recitals, and has been recorded by David Hickman.

Rafael is regarded as the popularizer of "La Virgen de la Macarena", commonly known as "the Bullfighter's Song", to US audiences.

His most significant if not famous single recording, "Moto Perpetuo", was written in the nineteenth century by Niccolò Paganini for violin, and features Mendez double-tonguing continuously for over 4 minutes while circular breathing to give the illusion that he is not taking a natural breath while playing.

Rafael Méndez's Personal Life

Rafael Méndez married Amor Rodriguez after meeting her in Detroit. They had twin sons, both now surgeons; Dr. Rafael G. Méndez, Jr. and Dr. Robert Méndez, and five grandchildren.

By the late 1950's, Méndez had been suffering from serious asthma-related problems which caused increasing difficulty at his level of performance. His playing was also affected by an injury at a baseball game in Mexico in 1967.

He retired from performing in 1975, but continued to compose and arrange.

The Death and Legacy of Rafael Méndez

Rafael Méndez died at his home in Encino, California on the 15th. September 15, 1981. He was 75 years of age when he died.

Arizona State University's music building houses the 1,400 sq. ft (130 m2) Rafael Méndez Library which was dedicated and opened in 1993.

The library holds 300 manuscripts and almost 700 compositions and arrangements by Méndez, as well as hundreds of images, articles and recordings. It also has an online counterpart.

In 2006, the Los Angeles Opera paid tribute to Rafael Mendez by performing a work based on his life. A reviewer in The Los Angeles Times wrote that:

"Mendez has been called the

greatest trumpet player of all

time."

During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.

The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognize anyone in the images and have any stories and information to add please comment below
