Doug Irwin, John French Professor of Economics delivered a Book Talk on his recently published "Clashing Over Commerce: A History of U.S. Trade Policy."
The Economist said that Professor Irwin’s book: "Tells the history of American trade policy, showing that trade is neither dull nor deserving of the attacks on it. . . . As Mr Irwin spins this grand narrative, he also debunks trade-policy myths."
Professor Irwin is also the author of Free Trade Under Fire (Princeton University Press, fourth edition 2015), Trade Policy Disaster: Lessons from the 1930s (MIT Press, 2012), Peddling Protectionism: Smoot-Hawley and the Great Depression (Princeton University Press, 2011), The Genesis of the GATT (Cambridge University Press, 2008, co-authored with Petros Mavroidis and Alan Sykes), Against the Tide: An Intellectual History of Free Trade (Princeton University Press, 1996), and many articles on trade policy in books and professional journals. The Postcard
A carte postale that was published by Neurdein et Cie of 52, Avenue de Breteuil, Paris.
The card was posted in Trouville on Sunday the 7th. August 1921. It was sent to:
Miss Morrish,
c/o 108, Albert Street,
Canton,
Cardiff,
South Wales.
The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"Hope you had a good
journey and are enjoying
yourself.
We arrived safely and it
is a lovely place, and we
are having glorious weather.
I have marked out hotel on
this card.
Fountain pen just ran dry.
F. M. J."
The first part of the message was written in ink, and from the word 'hotel' it was written in pencil.
Sinn Féin
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 7th. August 1921, in accordance with an agreement between the United Kingdom and Irish Republicans, British prisons released all Sinn Féin members who had been elected to the Dail Eireann.
Manitas de Plata
The day also marked the birth of Ricardo Baliardo.
Ricardo Baliardo, better known by his stage name Manitas de Plata ("Little Hands of Silver"), was a Spanish flamenco guitarist of Catalan Gitano descent, born in southern France.
Despite achieving worldwide fame, he was criticized for not following certain rhythmic rules (compás) that are traditional in flamenco.
-- Manitas de Plata's Life and Career
Baliardo was born in a gypsy caravan in Sète, southern France.
Nicknamed Manitas de Plata, he agreed to play in public only ten years after the death of the Romani-Belgian jazz guitarist and composer Django Reinhardt, in 1953.
Baliardo attained fame in the United States after a photography exhibition in New York, organized by his friend Lucien Clergue.
Ricardo recorded his first album in the chapel of Arles in France in 1963, on the Philips label. It was later re-released in 1967 and sold through the Book of the Month Club.
This record brought him to the attention of an American audience, where a manager obtained a booking for him to play a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York on the 24th. November 1965, and on The Ed Sullivan Show the same year. Ricardo went on to perform in various venues around the world.
Manitas de Plata was the uncle of Diego, Paco, and Tonino Baliardo, and cousin to Pablo, François (Canut), Patchaï, Nicolas, and André Reyes (the sons of his cousin, flamenco artist José Reyes, with whom he performed as a duo in the 1970's), all current or former members of the Catalan rumba band Gipsy Kings.
Manitas de Plata died on the 6th. November 2014, aged 93, in a retirement home in Montpellier. He had suffered a severe heart attack in April 2013.
-- Manitas de Plata's Legacy and Acclaim
One of Manitas de Plata's recordings earned him a letter from Jean Cocteau, acclaiming him as a creator.
Upon hearing him play at Arles in 1964, Pablo Picasso is said to have exclaimed:
"That man is of greater
worth than I am!"
Picasso then proceeded to draw on Baliardo's guitar.
Australian multi-instrumentalist Chris Freeman, his student in 1971, acknowledged de Plata's influence and teachings.

Three days ago I published a post called Love Me, Love My iPhone on Paris & I, which I'm including discretely in this posting too.
I created the Paris & I blog in February 2010, in a wave of excitement created purely by my new iPhone and the possibilities I spied for releasing more of my creativity. i even decided to never use the capital 'i' and stuck to that for about a year.
My first modest post was called Don't Pass Me By, as the sleek little device in my hand recorded my daily grind and transported me far beyond it.
Two posts later I tried to explain my thinking behind my new blog with an item entitled To Top It All. The adventure had begun. And for some reason it still seems as fresh as it did 20 months ago.
One photo a day, with a written commentary, every day for 20 months. I passed the 500 mark ages ago. I've found, perhaps, my ultimate channel of artistic expression, and it's almost entirely thanks to my iPhone that I've done so.
This name Paris & I has three significations, and they're all based on the 'i'. Paris can look after herself I reckon!
The first 'i' is the part of 'me' in every picture and every text. The second 'i' is the eye I use to initially register my impressions. And the third 'i' is a hommage to a company, and the man behind it, which has allowed me to finally focus my creative energies in an incredibly satisfying way.
You probably won't have guessed it, but the company's Apple and the man is Steve Jobs.
And the funny thing is I never liked Apple computers and never felt inclined to buy one in a million years. PC man me. To be honest, I had nothing against them, it's just that I started on PCs and couldn't be bothered learning more stuff just to do the same thing differently. But the iPhone changed all that.
And funnily enough, that sneaky little device even managed to eventually sneak into my Paris street pics on more than one occasion. And more than deserved every guest appearance. Here are a few samples from the last nearly two years. Thanks Steve.

L’obiettivo è consentire pari opportunità a donne e minoranze di genere all’interno dell’industria musicale.
APEROL with HEROES - TOGETHER WE CAN, ideato e prodotto da Music Innovation Hub Spa – Impresa Sociale (MIH), Friends&Partners, Live Nation, Vivo Concerti e RP Legal & Tax, in collaborazione con Arena di Verona Srl e Gianmarco Mazzi. In diretta streaming su LIVENow. Partner ufficiale Findus Green Cuisine. Partner tecnico Nastro Azzurro. A favore di Mission Diversity, promoted by Keychange, powered by Youtube e institutional partners UN/SDGS, ASVIS e UNAR - Ufficio Nazionale Antidiscriminazioni Razziali.
