The gag rule would prevent healthcare providers who receive federal funding under the family planning program from referring patients for abortion care. The object is to try and defund abortion providers like Planned Parenthood. Yet, abortion counseling etc., is only 3% of what Planned Parenthood actually does. They offer a wide range of women's healthcare needs, including cancer screenings.

During World War II, both Great Britain and Germany had experimented with very large glider designs (the Hamlicar and Gigant, respectively) capable of carrying tanks. Though glider assaults had varied results during the war, the US Air Force briefly considered resurrecting the idea in 1948, and commissioned Chase Aircraft to build a large glider, the XCG-20 Avitruc. The XCG-20 was of all-metal construction, with a fully-equipped flight deck and a rear-mounted loading ramp for vehicles to be driven directly into the fuselage. The USAF abandoned the idea of glider assaults soon after the first XCG-20 was completed, but Chase had anticipated this: through the simple installation of two propeller-driven engines, the XCG-20 became the XC-123. This itself was considered only an interim design, as the XC-123A had four turbojet engines, becoming the first all-jet transport aircraft.

The USAF rejected the XC-123A, as it was found to have poor performance and short range, owing to the thirsty jets of the early 1950s. However, the piston-engined XC-123 showed promise, and the USAF ordered it into production in 1953. Production was delayed due to Chase Aircraft being acquired by Kaiser, who in turn sold the design to Fairchild Aircraft, who would produce it as the C-123B Provider.

The C-123 was considered a supplemental aircraft to the C-119 Flying Boxcar already in service and the soon-to-be-deployed C-130 Hercules. It had better single-engine performance than the C-119, and acquired a reputation for reliability, rugged design, simple maintenance, and the ability to land almost anywhere. A small number were converted to C-123J standard, with ski landing gear for operations in Antarctica and Greenland, and experiments were even made to convert it to an amphibian. Nevertheless, the number of C-123s in service were small compared to other types, and the C-130 began replacing it beginning in 1958.

As the United States involved itself more in the Vietnam War, one major advantage of its Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army adversaries was the very jungle of Vietnam itself, which provided ready-made cover and camouflage from American air units. In an attempt to deprive the VC/NVA of jungle cover in known concentration areas, the USAF converted a number of C-123s to UC-123 standard, with spraying equipment for the pesticide Agent Orange. Under Operation Ranch Hand, UC-123s were among the first USAF aircraft deployed to Vietnam, and the first USAF aircraft lost in combat was a UC-123B. Spraying Agent Orange was very dangerous work, as it involved flying low and slow over hostile territory; it would not be until after the Vietnam War was over that it was learned that Agent Orange, used in the concentrated quantity employed in Vietnam, was also a deadly carcinogenic.

Besides their controversial employment as defoilant sprayers, standard C-123s were used as transports and Candlestick flareships, as the C-130 demand was exceeding supply, and the US Army’s CV-2 (later C-8) Caribous were proving the worth of a short-takeoff and landing transport. To improve the Provider’s performance in the “hot and high” conditions of Vietnam, two J85 turbojets were added beneath the wings of the C-123K variant, which became the final Provider variant and the main type used in Vietnam. CIA-flown Providers were used by Air America to clandestinely supply friendly Hmong tribes in Laos and in Cambodia. 54 C-123s were lost in Vietnam, second only to the C-130.

Following the end of American involvement in Vietnam, the C-123Ks were either handed over to South Vietnam or relegated to USAF Reserve and Air National Guard units, from which they were finally withdrawn around 1980. A few UC-123Ks were used to spray insecticides in Alaska and Guam as late as 1982. 11 other air forces used Providers, and the last C-123s were retired from the South Korean Air Force in 2001. 27 are preserved as museum pieces and a few remain in revenue service as “bush” aircraft in Alaska and elsewhere; remaining aircraft in storage were scrapped due to Agent Orange contamination.

Occasionally researching aircraft histories is an exercise in frustration, and this C-123K, 54-0659, is one of them. It was originally built as a C-123B and later upgraded to a C-123K--it may have flown in Vietnam, though strictly as a transport rather than a UC-123K sprayer, which is why it hasn't been scrapped. It was retired in 1981 (making it one of the final C-123s to leave service) and flown to MASDC in Arizona for storage. In 1989, 54-0659 was reactivated and flew with the US State Department as a general transport aircraft until 1991, when it was donated to Peru; there, it flew with the Peruvian National Police.

As the Providers were getting very old by the 1990s, 54-0659 was retired in 1994 and returned to Arizona. Two years later, it was reserved for the Pima Air and Space Museum for display, but as Pima already had a C-123, the aircraft was dropped in 2001. It was towed over to Aircraft Restoration and Marketing for scrap, but in 2003 54-0659 got another extension on life: it was picked up by a private owner and became N123KJ. However, it has not left ARM, and as of June 2024, remains there. In theory, the aircraft is still flyable, but would need some work to become airworthy again.

This was the first aircraft I photographed on the Boneyard Safari tour in June 2024; even though it was still fairly early in the morning, it was very hot (notice everyone else standing in the shade). I quickly found out that I'm not acclimated to an Arizona summer...

The Promise of Data: Will this Bring a Revolution in Health Care?

(March 22 to 27, 2015)

Credit: Salzburg Global Seminar/Ela Grieshaber

-----

It has now become an orthodoxy that we are moving into the age of 'Big Data'. This derives from ever increasing processing power and the vast surge in connectedness - with mobile technologies at the forefront and sensors in nearly all appliances, we are set to have 50 billion devices by 2020 connected in the cloud. It is argued that medical decisions can be truly evidence based, combining the most complete medical science with personal data, drawing where appropriate on 24/7 monitoring through mobile devices and patient reported outcome measures. Lifestyle advice and preventive action can be honed with ever greater accuracy. Benefits from treatment, its best timing, lowest cost, better understood risk, and more predictable side-effects should all flow from this data transition, bringing lower costs and higher value.

Corporations are competing in both investment and rhetoric. In 2013 Google launched a new subsidiary, Calico, which Larry Page claimed would represent 'moonshot thinking around health care', and there have been many similar claims. But how is all this justified? And how can we ensure that those advances which do arise from this new control of data truly benefit patients, rather than just the provider - and that this will be a benefit distributed across the social gradient and globally?

What are the risks on the horizon? Data is often siloed and used for competitive advantage. Protocols around privacy could be tested to destruction; for instance, it is possible to reverse engineer anonymized data to identify individuals. Forbes magazine even reports a case of medical data being sold on eBay. How might these risks be best mitigated?

This session will review the claims for Big Data and its true potential, and seek to identify the conditions under which it should yield the greatest benefits to patients and populations.

They are brought together through circumstance and stick together because they have noone else. A beautiful love story that takes you through a gamut of emotions.

March Field Air Museum

The C-123 is based on the airframe developed in 1945 by Chase Aircraft Co. of New Jersey. It was a 16-passenger troop-carrying glider of all wooden construction. First flown in 1945, it was towed by four-engine C-54 transports. In 1946, an all-metal, 32-seat troop cargo transport version was flown. After the Second World War the United States Army determined gliders were more hazardous to the troops being transported than the enemy and abandoned the program.

Fairchild inherited the design, adding two engines and fuel cells in the engine nacelles. In 1954 they produced a powered aircraft capable of operating from short, unprepared landing fields. In 1955, two 1,000lb thrust turbojet engines were fitted to provide auxiliary power and jet fuel tanks were suspended from the wings. The large rear cargo loading door lowers to become a ramp for both men and vehicles. It also serves as a paratroop jump platform, cargo drops, and low altitude parachute extraction drops.

Used extensively in Vietnam for defoliate spraying and Forward Air Control (FAC), some aircraft, designated AC-123K Gunships, were equipped with 7.62mm mini-guns, flares and night sensors.

Our aircraft is a troop transport “Provider”. It was delivered to the USAF on December 20, 1955, based in Europe the aircraft was used by the 1127th Field Activities Squadron (USAFE), in Leopoldville Congo during the 1965 Simba Uprising. Returning to the United States it became part of the 1st Air Commando Squadron before 1972 when it was transferred to the AF Reserve at Rickenbacker AFB, Ohio. Retiring from service in September 1981 it flew into March Field to become part of the collection. This aircraft is on loan from the NMUSAF

Photos from Avasant Provider Connect Conference held at Universal Studios Globe Theater in Universal City, CA held on Tuesday, March 10, 2015. Photo by Steven Lam.

This is a photograph from the Tom Brennan Memorial New Years Day 2014 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in the Phoenix Park, Dublin City, Ireland on Wednesday January 1st 2014 at 12:00. The race is promoted and organised by the Liffey Valley Athletic Club. The race starts and finishes on Furze Road off Chesterfield Avenue. The route takes a right handed loop around by Ordnance Survey Road and back onto Chesterfield Avenue. The long straight from Chesterfield Avenue to the finish on Furze Road always provides a very exciting finish as runners battle for places and times. There was rather horrible conditions in the hours leading up to the race with heavy rain and wind. However the weather changed for the better and the race took place in clear, bright, dry conditions. However, the breeze remained and made for some tough stretches for participants on the looped course. About 450 people took part in the event.

This race event is part of the Dublin Lord Mayor's "5 Alive Challenge" (see www.dublinsport.ie/5alive/)

Electronic Timing and Event Management and Registration was provided by Precision Timing - their website will have results of the race (www.precisiontiming.net/result/racetimer)

How can I get a full resolution copy of these photographs?

All of the photographs here on this Flickr set are available for view and download under a Creative Commons License (www.flickr.com/creativecommons/). This means you can view them, post them to other websites, use them, etc provided you always provide a link back to the original photograph or photoset here on Flickr. These photographs on Flickr are provided at a lower resolution than the originals. All of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available offline, free, at no cost, at full image resolution also. We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us. This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

In summary please remember - all we ask is for you to link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. Taking the photographs and preparing them for online posting does take a significant effort. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc.

If you would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

Fairchild C-123K Provider

The Provider was a short-range assault transport used for airlifting troops and cargo to and from small, unprepared airstrips. The rugged C-123 became an essential part of U.S. Air Force airlift during the Southeast Asia War, where it flew primarily as an in-theater airlifter and a Ranch Hand sprayer.

Between 1966 and 1969, 184 C-123Bs were converted to C-123Ks with the addition of two J85 jet engines. These jet engines increased the C-123's payload weight by a third, shortened its takeoff distance, improved its climb rate, and gave a much greater margin of safety should one of the piston engines fail.
