March Field Air Museum
The C-123 is based on the airframe developed in 1945 by Chase Aircraft Co. of New Jersey. It was a 16-passenger troop-carrying glider of all wooden construction. First flown in 1945, it was towed by four-engine C-54 transports. In 1946, an all-metal, 32-seat troop cargo transport version was flown. After the Second World War the United States Army determined gliders were more hazardous to the troops being transported than the enemy and abandoned the program.
Fairchild inherited the design, adding two engines and fuel cells in the engine nacelles. In 1954 they produced a powered aircraft capable of operating from short, unprepared landing fields. In 1955, two 1,000lb thrust turbojet engines were fitted to provide auxiliary power and jet fuel tanks were suspended from the wings. The large rear cargo loading door lowers to become a ramp for both men and vehicles. It also serves as a paratroop jump platform, cargo drops, and low altitude parachute extraction drops.
Used extensively in Vietnam for defoliate spraying and Forward Air Control (FAC), some aircraft, designated AC-123K Gunships, were equipped with 7.62mm mini-guns, flares and night sensors.
Our aircraft is a troop transport “Provider”. It was delivered to the USAF on December 20, 1955, based in Europe the aircraft was used by the 1127th Field Activities Squadron (USAFE), in Leopoldville Congo during the 1965 Simba Uprising. Returning to the United States it became part of the 1st Air Commando Squadron before 1972 when it was transferred to the AF Reserve at Rickenbacker AFB, Ohio. Retiring from service in September 1981 it flew into March Field to become part of the collection. This aircraft is on loan from the NMUSAF

The Fairchild C-123 Provider was a rugged aircraft that served in many different roles. It served as troop carrier, med-evac aircraft and even as a gunship. It provided much of the in-country transport in Vietnam and Cambodia, carrying all kinds of cargo, including livestock.
The Provider borrowed its basic design from a cargo glider, though the design was always intended to be eventually powered. The C-123K conversion added two jet engine pods under the wings. It has an aft cargo ramp through which the aircraft's cargo was loaded.
In 1962, the U.S. Air Force began Operation Ranch Hand, in which the Agent Orange defoliant was used. Its purpose was to expose the trails used by the Viet Cong to supply their troops in the jungle. One of these Providers crashed in February 1962. Its crew of three were killed, becoming the first U.S. Air Force members to lose their lives in the conflict.
The aircraft on display at Castle Air Museum started its life as a C-123B version which entered service in November 1956. In 1967, it was modified to a C-123K version. During its life, it served with the Tactical Air Command, the Air Defense Command, and the Air Force Logistics Command. In 1972, it was transferred to the U.S. Air Force Reserve until its retirement in 1980.

At the May 4 Health Care Commission meeting, DHSS Secretary Walker framed a discussion about preventing violence in Delaware while also engaging health care providers from Christiana Care, St. Francis, A.I. duPont Hospital for Children/Nemours, Henrietta Johnson Medical Center and Westside Family Healthcare on their efforts. "How do we collectively develop something that is a real wrap-around service?" Secretary Walker asked as she went through slides documenting gun violence statistics in Wilmington, the impact of trauma, the role health care providers can play in terms of interventions, the recommendations of the CDC Community Advisory Council and the resulting increase in services for youth this summer. She committed DHSS resources, including a possible plan to "redeploy our social workers in a different way."
Yvette Gbemudu, medical director for Henrietta Johnson and a family physician, said she used the center's behavioral health services to intervene on behalf a woman struggling after she lost her 22-year-old son to gun violence. Gbemudu said emergency rooms see the immediate victims of gun violence, but places like Henrietta Johnson see "the people who are bleeding from the inside."
Chris Manning of Nemours said the system's Jessup Street Clinic has a memorial board for those who have been lost to gun violence and impacted by it. Nemours is added 15 new behavioral health workers across all of its sites.
St. Francis and Westside both have outreach programs to the surrounding neighborhoods they serve in Wilmington as a way to build trust. St. Francis will hire 10 young people through its Summer Youth Job Program, and Lolita Lopez, president and CEO of Westside, said cultural competence is critical with at-risk families.
Secretary Walker said city officials hope to increase the capacity of community centers this summer and invest in a year-round youth employment program.
