Red Runner Retreat

~~~~~
A cloudy night at an old cafe and gas station along historic Route 66, Mojave Desert. This structure had burned on the same evening as the Goffs General Store, likely due to arson. Volunteers had cleaned up much of the area and even repainted part of the historic "retreat" sign. This structure was the former cafe. After two long years, my night photography friends and I got together for an eight-night trip to Nevada and California. This was a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. Illuminated during the exposure by a full moon trying to break through the clouds and a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. This photo will most likely appear in my third history/night photography book I'm working on now. Thank you.
A night photo fisheye view of a fan of what I believe is the back end of a generator inside its wooden enclosure. I snuck in a quick visit just before Thanksgiving Day, photographing for two nights in a row in the California desert near the Mexican border. And I managed to stay awake for Thanksgiving dinner the following evening, a great success. Although warm and sunny during the day, by the time I packed up, it was below freezing and I had ice on my windshield. I illuminated the scene with red and teal light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. Thanks for looking.
A mysterious night photo of an abandoned 1920s transcontinental airport languishing in obscurity somewhere in the Mojave Desert. I illuminated the night scene with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than typing key prompts for AI-generated art.
The Joshua Twins Star Trails (5477)
~~~~~

This is a star trails photo, showing the movement of the stars as created by the rotation of the earth over 30 minutes. I love how a single image can show movement over such a long time! I set my tripod-mounted camera to a long exposure, keeping the shutter open for a long time, which makes the camera much more sensitive to light than our eyes on this already bright evening. I illuminated the foreground with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight to bring out more depth. While I frequently hike into Joshua Tree NP for as much as a mile or more during the night, some of the most beautiful views are just off the side of the road.

~~~~~
I took this photo in Joshua Tree National Park, CA, hanging out with Dave Dasinger while doing so. JTNP is my spiritual home for night photography, and it felt utterly fantastic to return here to photograph here at night and hike during the day.
Found in a set of abandoned triple-wide trailers outside the town of Mojave last summer. The food bowls are a total mystery to me.
Due to some distracting highlights, I ended up compositing the face of the TV from a second exposure. I also worked on correcting the perspective in Photoshop, to try and square things up . . . until I realized that nothing about these trailers is square. They are slowly being push into trapezoids by the endless high desert wind. 146 seconds, full moon and Protomachine flashlight: 3 colors, from 7 directions.
A night photo, as you might guess. This truck must be an unbelievable force of nature. And back in the 1920s or whenever this was built, it must have been particularly imposing, a sort of monstrous Mad Max/Burning Man contraption that was bigger than life. I snuck in a quick visit just before Thanksgiving Day, photographing for two nights in a row in the California desert near the Mexican border. And I managed to stay awake for Thanksgiving dinner the following evening. Although warm and sunny during the day, by the time I packed up, it was below freezing and I had ice on my windshield. This truck has "Dalton Truck Co Crane Division" scrawled on the back. I believe this is a Mack AC truck that was designed to tow a Universal Truck Crane. Mack AC Series trucks were made from 1916-1939.
One of the first signs your town is in trouble is if the post office closes or moves away. One of the few remaining resident mentioned that once you lose your zipcode, the police/fire/ambulance don't arrive in a timely manner anymore. Its faster to drive yourself to the hospital than wait for them to figure out which poor sap has to make the long drive out (if at all). Strangely they said Fedex, UPS and Amazon have no trouble delivering packages on time.
In 1917, if you explored a Nevada ghost town you'd probably find a dusty old Faro table on end in the back of an abandoned bar. In 2017 you find '80s arcade games. Listening to the cosmos seems easier to imagine with the Milky Way arching overhead. Owens Valley Radio Observatory, run by Cal Tech since 1958, and located in the beautiful Owens Valley near Big Pine and Bishop, CA. I illuminated the dish with a handheld ProtoMachines LED flashlight during the exposure. The sky was murky with the Georges Fire near Mt. Whitney, which was caused by lightning, so I had to be patient, waiting for the skies to periodically clear. Another challenge was that this enormous radio telescope kept moving during exposures! The beautiful night desert, where silence is louder and the stars shine brighter. This is Ojo Oro Arch, a hidden gem located in a secret corner of the Mojave Desert, not a strange new world from "Star Trek" but almost as far. Bodhi Smith, Chip Morton and I hiked several miles and hung out during this night photography trip. When I finally settled down to sleep under the stars around 3:30 am cocooned by a canopy of stars and the Milky Way arching directly overhead. Every several minutes, I saw shooting stars streaking through the night sky. Much thanks to Bodhi for inviting me on this fantastic trip. The moonlight added a magical touch to the already captivating light and shadows in the station. To enhance this effect, I used a vivid red and warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 RGB light painting device to illuminate the scene while the camera's shutter was open during a long exposure night photo. A rare night photo of the Space Shuttle transport carrier in this long exposure photo, showing the perceived movements of the stars during this very long exposure image. This is a Boeing 747 Tail #N911NA. This shuttle vehicle transport carrier is one of two that ferried the Space Shuttles to and from destinations. The aircraft was extensively modified by Boeing in 1976. This shuttle carrier was retired on February 8, 2012 after its final mission to the Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, California, and will be used as a source of parts for NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). It was on loan to from NASA Armstrong to Joe Davies Heritage Airpark in Palmdale, CA, and I thankfully received permission to photograph it then. I illuminated the plane with a handheld Protomachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. This photo appears in my second book of history and night photography.
